I have an 2.5 Ghz i5 iMac with a 500 MB HDD.  I had 8 GB of RAM, but recently upgraded to 16 GB. (Apple says that 8 GB is the max for a mid-2012, non-Retina MacPro, but that's another story.  Needless to say 16 GB works fine.)  Anyhow, with 8 GB of RAM, Logos was practically unusable when indexing and the rest of the computer was sluggish.  After switching to 16 GB, the computer is much more responsive.  I fully recommend adding the RAM.

I also have an iMac with the 128 GB Fusion SSD drive and  8 GB of RAM.   I haven't had the same issues with that computer.  The believe the SSD makes a significant amount of difference, making the extra RAM not as necessary.

I have an older Macbook Pro(2009) with only 8GB of RAM. It was still sluggish. I then upgraded my HD to a SSD and it now runs incredibly.
