run out of disk space

My MacBook Air has ran out of disk space. And 95% of it is Logos. Is it possible to install my Logos software onto an external hard drive and remove it from my computer? Will I still be able to use Logos whenever the hard drive is connected to my MacBook?

What else is on your drive? If your priority is Logos, you can get a whole lot off your drive. Before I upgraded, I had an 80GB Mac. You can get rid of all sorts of programs and files. Start with that. Stuff like Garage Band is a big program you can remove.

Running off another drive is a bad idea and I don't think it would work for you. Logos word processor, and a web browser.

It's possible, but it would be horribly slow unless it was USB 3 (and even then it would still be slow). I wouldn't recommend it.

If Logos is taking up 95% of the space on your drive, then removing other stuff isn't going to help much. You need a bigger hard drive. And not an external one as mab and Mark have suggested (too slow). You need to upgrade your main drive.

If you're laptop has sata 3, and an esata connection, AND you put your SSD in the external drive, then it should be quick.

Just a normal mechanical drive over usb 2 or even worse usb 1? sounds almost but not quite as bad as thumb screws.

Macbook Airs don't have eSATA. So it's USB3 (if it's a 2012 or later model), or a Thunderbolt to eSATA converter (or Thunderbolt external drive) if it's 2011. Earlier than that, and there's no sensible option.

I use a MacBook Air with Logos 5 installed on an USB 2 removable media and find the performance to be better than acceptable. My setup is straight forward but does depend upon one pre-requisite - I am running Logos 5 on top of Windows 8 Pro using BootCamp. That said I previously ran Logos 4, with like performance, on a similarly spec'd MacBook on top of Windows XP using VirtualBox for OS X Snow Leopard. Also, I have seen other accounts, i.e. here., of using file system links to re-locate Logos resources to storage volumes other than the OS X default.

I use the hardware linked to:

Seagate USB hdd (or similar)
Elago (or similar) microSDXC card USB 2 adapter
SanDisk 64GB Ultra microSDXC - though I recommend Upgrade (or similar)

In lieu of 2 & 3 above I am considering SanDisk Cruzer Fit Ultra.

I originally installed to the Seagate hdd (traditional rotating media) until the 64GB microSDXC became available.

I still make use of both to keep everything going smoothly. Most of the time I use the microSDXC card - leaving it attached to my MacBook. At times I move my library between one volume on the microSDXC card and another on hdd, setting the drive letter, using the disk management console, according to which device is in use. For the massive resource update I moved everything back to the volume on the hdd. After updating and re-indexing I returned everything to the microSDXC card volume.

With my current setup disk I/O is consistently in the range of 5mb/sec - 10mb/sec. The newer microSDXC or Cruzer Fit Ultra should do better, using USB 3 better still. Response times are very low as the microSDXC is a MLC Flash Memory device like a SSD. It took seven hours to 'Rebuild index' after the recent massive update to this installation. Compared to two+ hours to 'Rebuild index' the update to a Logos 5.3 beta install on top of Windows 7 running on a first gen i7 quad core setup with 16GiB RAM.

DO NOT re-format the flash memory device if you follow the above. The default format, exFAT, works and is optimal for the type of media.

My installation currently lists 8,746 resources in the Library. I have downloaded the Verbum Practicum videos as well as coursework media and bible narration audio. IT WORKS.[:)]
