Myles Coverdale (1488-1569) was educated at Cambridge, influenced as a reformer by Robert Barnes and known for his work, while in exile in Europe, in translating the Bible into the English vernacular, producing the first complete Bible in English in 1535. Henry VIII had a Coverdale Bible put into every English Church, chained to a bookstand, so that every citizen would have access to a Bible.

Myles returned to England in 1539, living briefing in Newbury, but on the execution of Thomas Cromwell (who had been his friend and protector since 1527) and Robert Barnes in 1540, he was compelled again to go into exile and lived for a time at Tübingen, and, between 1543 and 1547, was a pastor and schoolmaster at Bergzabern.

In March, 1548, he returned to England, was well received at the court of the new monarch, Edward VI, and was made king's chaplain. He became Bishop of Exeter in 1551, but was deposed by Queen Mary in 1553 and fled again to Europe, as did many protestant clery at that time. Coverdale spent time living and working in Germany, Switzerland, and Denmark before settling in London as the rector of St. Magnus, London Bridge from 1563 to 1566.

His translation of the Psalter is used in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, and is the most familiar translation of the psalms for many Anglicans all over the world. As a consequence, many musical settings of the psalms make use of the Coverdale translation. His translation of the Roman Canon is still used in some Anglican and Anglican Use Roman Catholic churches.

You can bid on the Coverdale Bible in the recently enlarged English Bible Collection over at http://www.logos.com/product/16808/english-bible-collection
but be advised that bids as low as $30 are not likely to see this fine collection of older works into production this year or even next...

But what about Myles Coverdale's "other" works ? They close this Friday at about half the price a $30 bid on the English Bible Collection: http://www.logos.com/product/8830/the-works-of-myles-coverdale

Author: Myles Coverdale

Publisher: Samuel Bagster

Publication Date: 1838

The Coverdale Bible, translated into English by Myles Coverdale, was the first complete Bible translated into English. It was also the first English Bible to have the full approval from the Crown to be published. Finished and printed in 1535, the Coverdale Bible stands as a landmark in the history of the English Bible.

Myles Coverdale (1488–1569) was educated at Cambridge and later became a priest at Norwich, entering the convent of Austin friars at Cambridge, where he came under the influence of the "first" English Reformer, Robert Barnes. He is the first person in history to publish a complete English Bible, building on the work of his predecessors Tyndale and others.
