Saved Layouts should save all settings that affect how each panel in that layout looks and behaves, such as Copy Bible Verses settings, Visual Filters, and Search panel settings. Some such settings are saved (like number of columns, link sets and "follow"), but the implementation of saving panel settings with layouts appears to be inconsistent/incomplete. Other things which should be saved with the Layout but aren't include: whether the Interlinear panels were on/off, whether TOC panels were expanded/collapsed.

Example: I have particular Copy Bible Verse settings that I like to use for when I'm planning worship (for copying the Scripture readings to Word to print out for the readers). But whenever I load my Worship Planning Layout I have to reset my CBV settings to go with that layout if I'd been fiddling with them for some reason before. They do not get saved with the layout.

Steps to repro:

1. Save a layout (or open a saved one) that includes CBV.

2. Set the CBV settings to a style of your choice and a Bible of your choice.

3. Layouts > Update Active

4. Now change the CBV settings to something different from in step 2. Do not resave the layout.

Layouts > Reopen the saved layout by name

Result: the changes you made in step 4 stick

Expect: to revert to the saved layout as it was last saved.

Conclusion: These settings are not saved with the layout. They should be.

Same results observed with VF, Search Settings, TOC panel, interlinear panel. I suspect other Tool panel settings (e.g., Cited By) are also not saved with the Layout, but haven't taken the time to try them all out.

Saving CBV with None sticks. But saving CBV with Follow does not stick (only the verse)

Search settings stick. VF settings persist. Interlinear & TOC persist if showing

Search settings stick.

I tried "Match case" and it didn't.

Dave Hooton:
VF settings persist.

I tried "Bible text only" and it didn't.

I tried turning each OFF, resaving the Layout, then turning them back ON again and opening the Layout again (which should have restored them to the OFF state), but they remained open.

Sorry Rosie, I used persist to indicate settings that aren't affected after loading a layout where their state/values are different.

Oh, I see your different meaning now.

I still maintain that Layouts should affect the settings of which panels are open. That, IMO, is part of what a "layout" means to people in their minds. How the screen is laid out. It could be argued that things like search settings should be global/persistent and not affected by opening different layouts. But then we'd need some other sort of beast, call it "projects" perhaps, to really remember everything about what you were in the middle of so you can return to working on it exactly as you were when you left it. I thought that's what layouts were supposed to do, but perhaps I was reading too much into the concept.

I wasn't disagreeing! If there had been a significant difference I would have complained  e.g. I don't have CBV in my layout and I don't use Follow. But I have two Search panels and all settings & parameters stick!

Bump! And also see related thread: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/102222.aspx

Eli Evans? This is a design issue.

I'm puzzled as I've just opened several layouts and they preserved Search settings ... there is another variable we've not found.

Can you explain what you did in steps? And what you mean by "preserved Search settings"? I want to be sure I understand in which sense you're using that word. As you can see, Dave and I were using opposite meanings of the word "persist" in our discussion above, which caused some confusion.

In my opinion, search settings should not be preserved or persist (Dave's meaning) when you open a layout. Rather they should be set back to whatever they were when that Layout was saved. In other words, they should be saved or preserved (my meaning) in/with the Layout. With that understanding, are you still seeing the behavior I'd expect rather than the behavior I was complaining about? Do tell me more.

My opinion is of course open to discussion. That's why I raised this. I think it's unexpected behavior, bad design. Not necessarily a "bug" as it might be working exactly as intended, but I do think it needs to be reviewed by Eli.

They were as they were when the layout was closed ... and different between layouts.

So let me try to get your steps straight:

1. You closed a layout after saving it with certain search settings?

2. And then you changed the search settings somehow?  [This is the key part that I'm not sure you're doing.]

3. And then you opened that previously closed layout again and the search settings were restored back to what they were when that layout was closed?

I did something more simple. I knew I had used the search with a variety of settings today. So I open layouts which had been saved anytime from last night to 3 months ago. They all presented separate settings unrelated to today's work but in keeping with the workflow for which the layout was saved. It is a recent bug if verified.

OK, thanks for that.

I'll hope for someone from Faithlife to weigh in on this in the coming week.

I'm able to replicate this with CBV.

I wasn't able to replicate with Search settings. Both Match settings (e.g.match case and/or all word forms) , and where the search took place (eg. searching "everything" search vs "All Resources.") remained true to how I saved the layout. What settings in search were not working?

What in Visual filters was not staying? Do you mean the visual filter panel where you construct the visual filters, or what visual filters are enabled on a particular resource?

I mean what visual filters are enabled on a particular resource.

For example, here's a reproducible case:

1. Open The New Testament and the People of God (my favorite test resource, but any book should do).

2. Make sure "Show Page Numbers" is off.

3. Save as named Layout

4. Turn ON Show Page Numbers

5. Load the layout you just saved

Page numbers are still on.

Expect them to be off, because they were off in the saved layout.

You didn't say whether you were able to reproduce this with the open/closed status of TOC panels and Interlinear panels, which should be saved with the layout but don't seem to be restored when you reload that layout if the status of them has changed in between.

(I'm trying to remember what I was seeing with Search settings and reproduce it, but so far I haven't been able to. However the remainder of the report still holds. I'll let you know if I stumble upon the glitch with Search settings again.)

Interlinear is not respected. I'll review my report to see if it is mentioned there.

ToC status seems to be respected (With the layout set to show the ToC, collapsing ToC and reopening the Layout results in the ToC being exposed.)

I got word on this today. Sorry for the delay. Visual filter settings are global and are thus not saved on a per layout basis.
