I would expect one of two behaviors when, in my library window, I search something like this

publisher:

I would expect either (1) everything to show up (because each volume in my library has at least no character in the publisher field), or (2) I would expect only titles that have no publisher listed. However, the search returns 13 results (out of over 4,000 volumes), as shown below.

Can anyone explain this result? Thanks in advance.

Lew

If you look closely at the number of hits, which narrows down during typing, you will find that filtering for publisher is the same as for publisher: - the colon is not taken into account and the library lists all resources where "publisher" is somewhere in the existant metadata: e.g. in the author or publisher field (Thomas Nelson Publishers, Messianic Jewish Publishers) or in the resource description.

Lew, if you want to use the publisher filter to find everything, you'd use the wildcard character to match all (or no) publishers - publisher:* - though that would be kind of pointless since leaving the find box blank would give you the same result.

If, you want to find only the resources that have no publisher listed, as is more likely what you were trying to do, then click the Publisher column header to sort/group by Publisher. This will group all your resources into collapsible sections by publisher. The one at the top will list all the resources that have no publisher, and you can click the little triangle to expand that section and see the titles:
