I recently upgraded to Logos 6 (from Logos 3 Scholar). I'm going through the 10 day video course and I am stuck on the Topic Guide search. When I type anything into the Topic Guide it comes up blank.

Hi Andrew - and welcome to the forums

Andrew Swineford:
I recently upgraded to Logos 6

When you upgraded did you go with the free core engine or did you purchase a package?

You need more than the free engine to get access to the Topic Guide.

The Topic Guide requires (at least) the Logos Controlled Vocabulary dataset (https://www.logos.com/product/25628/logos-controlled-vocabulary-dataset) which is present in any base package/crossgrade since Logos 4. You can get it now in a Logos 7 Feature Set or Logos Now.

Interesting. When I looked at the list of what the upgrade did not include the Topic Guide wasn't mentioned.

Logos does not seem to have any way to easily determine what datasets are available to the user. Nowhere in my account information does it say what I have purchased or not purchased. When I try to use the Topic Guide it doesn't tell me that the dataset is not installed. It just does nothing.

To see what datasets you own click on Help (circled question mark) --> About Logos --> column on left side

Is there anything in-program to point out what you're missing (for a feature)? E.g., no LCV for the topic guide?

I understand you could go to the FFS product page and see which items are new to you, but that puts the burden on the user, instead of the program plainly reporting that a required dataset is missing (once you go to use a feature/tool).

If Logos will be adding red Xs to info, perhaps the About column you mentioned might be a good place to indicate unavailable features?

Welcome Big Smile

Logos wiki => Upgrade or Crossgrade to Logos 6? shows Topic Guide needs Logos Controlled Vocabulary (LCV) dataset, which is was part of Logos 6 Starter libraries. Right side of https://www.logos.com/product/25628/logos-controlled-vocabulary-dataset product page shows LCV inclusion in many products, including Now membership and Logos 7 feature sets along with language specific LCV.

Concur Topic Guide is not mentioned on product page, which could in list of Features Limited by Library.

Personally Thankful for Logos Now that includes LCV plus much more, including => New Feature: Fuzzy Bible Search that finds more verses than Libronix 3

+1 Yes for Tech Support Information in About having Red X's for datasets currently not licensed (under existing Headings so have an idea of what is affected by missing dataset).

Logos 7.3 RC 2 information illustration (albeit cannot scroll down Tech Support Information on OS X 10.10.5 to show Topic Guide in a Pre-Logos 7 Library that has LCV):

Logos 7.3 RC 2 with Logos Now that shows LCV under Topic Guide:

Because many of the dependencies go back to L4, I don't know of any unified list of the dependencies for features especially when you get to features that require a Reverse Interlinear or a Lexicon ... I need some time to think about it to determine if it is even practical to provide the user information - before or after purchase - as to what features one should expect to function at what level + what purchase would increase functionality.

The list of "Features Not Included in the Core Engine" (and the other lists on that page) was targeted at customers upgrading from Logos 5, and helping them make a decision between a paid crossgrade and the free engine. If you're coming from Logos 3, without a base package purchase, there will be many other Logos 4 and 5 features you are missing. (If there was a similar feature in Logos 3, the equivalent feature should still work in Logos 6. Otherwise, it's likely that the Logos 6 feature requires a new dataset that has been released since Logos 3.)

I can see how this list of "not included features" is confusing in your situation, and will pass this feedback along.

This is something we hope to improve in a future (free) update. When required datasets aren't available, we'd like to make it clearer what is missing and how to get it. (Some features, such as Atlas and Syntax Search, already do this, but even those aren't very helpful, and it's not consistent across the application.)

That's good to hear.
