Mattillo:

Dan or others... why would you recommend this set so highly?  What sets it apart from others?  I don't own any of the WBCs but I thought I remember someone mentioning they were formatted oddly or they were hard to read.  Any thoughts on why I might want this set?  If you could describe it in one term where would it sit: liberal/conservative/evangelical/etc?  Thanks in advance

The WBC Commentaries have their strength in textual criticism, philological notes, form criticism and structure. The comment and explanation part depends on the volumes, but in generally that is the weak point of the series. Too much to less at the comment part. The most authors are evangelicals, many are more liberal in their positions. All in all a very good set (see also http://bestcommentaries.com/series/word-biblical-commentary-wbc/)

I picked up a few editions last year when they were on a good sale.  My experience is that the problem with the format seems to be this: it doesn't use footnotes.  So you are reading on a passage and all the technical discussions, and quotes of other works, reference citations, etc. are inline.  It makes reading a challenge.

It is solidly evangelical, drawing on the best of critical scholarship to advance study of the Bible. In the critical world it is conservative in it's views typically although is irenic with opposing views. The scholarship in these volumes is second to none in general. If we were to compare it to say New International Commentary, I would say the WBC digs deeper into the original language for the most part. WBC also sections things off a bit more than NIC, you have in WBC each section begins with a fresh translation and a detailed analysis of the text (Form/Structure/Setting), commentary and Explanations (sometimes this area of reflection/application is put off till end of the larger section being discussed). meaning sometimes the WBC can be better to go to for ease of jumping into a particular purpose of study. I own both the NIC and the WBC and find the WBC is used far more often than most NIC volumes... Now that could be just me I know many who prefer the NIC but for me if i could have only one it would be the WBC... I just wish they would complete it.

The WBC is not my favorite commentary set but it is a good solid one and well worth this price. I picked it up about 7 years ago on sale and use it often.

Does anyone have any idea how long WBC is likely to be on sale for? I did notice that other bible software editions have it at the same price, so I assume it is a publisher's reduction.

I ask, as I don't think I have ever seen it at that low a price since I started out with Logos, back in the old Libronix days, and I don't want to miss it, but just not sure whether I can afford it right at the moment. I am assuming that Academic discount is not applicable to WBC, as the price is still showing at $399, and I currently have academic discount on my account.

Thanks

Duncan

I do apologise guys, I just noticed that an end banner has been added to the front page ad for WBC, showing an end date of 22nd May. I should have looked again first, before asking.

Mark Smith:

Travis Walter:
decent price

IIRC that is as good a price as we've seen on the entire set. Definitely a very good price and certainly a very good deal. Get it before it changes!

Amen, and verily!

I'd jump on it if they offered dynamic pricing.  But I already own over half the set and of course the ones I already own are the ones I wanted most, so without the dynamic pricing it's not such a good deal for me.  Crying

Truly happy though for all those who benefit from this great sale.  Big Smile

At that price I wouldn't let it go. Rejoice Christian software is the only one that used to offer it at that price. When it goes back to $1200 you're going to wish you had bought it for $399. So if money is not an issue, get it -- there's always payment plans.

I am not in a position to suggest it must be got, especially if one owns all volumes one really wants. But it is a bargain and may not come around again anytime soon, I am glad this thread is getting attention so people can make the right decision for them. One might ask customer service to see about the sale of previously owned volumes. For the best of WBC maybe someone would be willling to buy them allowing you to get the collection if you wanted I am not saying every volume is strong top of list but I have found the weak volumes still provide great insight.

Dan, I'm thinking I must be a little thick headed today (or should I say again/still), but I'm not quite following what you mean by the two comments noted above.

EDITED:  Oh!  In your second point were you suggesting that someone else who may want to spend a little less than the $400 price of the entire set might want to buy from me just the volumes I already have, thus giving them several volumes at a good price and giving me some cash to put toward the purchase of the entire set?

By the way, I posted basically the same comment I made earlier in this thread because like you, I know it's a great deal and want to see it keep getting attention.

Sorry I wasn't clearer, I am glad you figured it out, I think my posts are less articulate when I do them on my iPad somehow, possibly the autocorrect I constantly fight with, I cannot tell you the number of corrections I have had to make on some posts.

No problem, Dan.  I see now that the two comments I set up as bullet points are in fact related.

I'm thinking I'll have to  pass on this great sale.  I just don't have the time to check with sales and look into the ins-and-outs of trying to sell off volumes I bought individually and then ordering the full WBC set at the sale price.  Besides, I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy enough of what I already have to make it worth trying to sell what I have.  Even if I sold them at $10 each, anyone buying all I own would be paying very close to what they can get the whole set for on sale, and I wouldn't feel right about selling to them if they didn't know about the sale.  All I can do is hope they do another sale where you can buy individual volumes at something near what they'd be individually if they offered dynamic pricing on the current sale.

Ok I took the dive and got the WBC... 2 questions if anyone can answer them.

1) If I already owned some WBC volumes do I now have 2 licenses so I can sell one if I wish?

2) I noticed the WBC isn't complete.  I know the O'Brien commentary got removed (I'll buy iit from someone if you want to sell it to me :) ) but what about the other volumes like Acts, 1 Cor, etc

1) Unknown I would have you call customer service, theoretically you should, normally you never have two licences due to dynamic pricing but in this case since there is no dynamic pricing the answer may be different.

2)

Forthcoming

2017 Gorman, Frank H. Numbers
? Stuart, Douglas Micah - Malachi (rev. ed.)
? Walton, Steve Acts 1-14
? Walton, Steve Acts 15-28
? Clarke, Andrew D. 1 Corinthians
2017 Arnold, Clinton E. Colossians
2017 Kim, Seyoon; Bruce, F. F. 1 & 2 Thessalonians
2017 Bauckham, Richard J. 2 Peter and Jude Revision

I had read around January that Steve Walton was quite ill, I had also heard over a year ago Acts was well over half done, that said with his illness I have no idea when it could be done.

PS: To just be cynical with 4 replacement volumes being released this year every set sold is another potential customer to update their sets. But still think it's a great deal.

Thank you Dan. I only owned one volume so this turns out to be a great deal for me. I guess we will just wait and see what time brings

From what I've heard, FL won't allow transfers on the O'Brien's volumes WBC or Pillar NTC since it'd be kind of like approving the sale of a plagiarized work. You are paying for it to whoever owns it and paying FL to transfer which under the circumstances would make it unethical for all parties involved, since nobody is supposed to be selling that anymore.

Blessings!

Forthcoming dates came from best commentaries but not sure where they got the dates as on the zondervan sight I was not able to find dates for those books or even ones on amazon which usually has books in its system upto 6 moths before the actual release date.

Though I'm grateful for these Zondervan sales I wonder what the deal is.  First it was the 6 @ 60 sale, then the EBC revised, then EBC original and now WBC.  I wonder why all the discounts?

I wonder what is next? :)
