Hi all,

A question: Is it possible to create a visual filter that displays instances of NT use of the OT?

I have the OTUNT interactive, sure that is pulling the verse from somewhere in terms of tags? And if such tags exist then there must be a way to search for them.

Maybe I am missing something patently obvious, but I'd appreciate whatever insights you may have.

Thanks, Liam

  1. Go to a NT quotation or allusion to the OT (eg., Mt 1:23).
  2. Open the information pane, look under "literary typing".
  3. Right-click on the links to search these types.
  4. Save your search as a visual filter.

If you click the "About" button in the Interactive and scroll down to the bottom you get some information about searching for its associated labels

There is more information in the Logos help file

@Francis,

Thanks so much for your quick reply. Since my OP I came up with this search string that seems to do the job:

{Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal> AND Relationship= "Citation"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal> AND Relationship= "Quotation"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal> AND Relationship= "Allusion"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal> AND Relationship= "Echo"}

Saved the search as a visual filter and set the formatting to italics.

@Graham those example searches formed the basis of the above which I kind of discovered whilst poking around.

Thanks anyway... :-/

LMAM:
{Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal> AND Relationship= "Citation"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal> AND Relationship= "Quotation"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal> AND Relationship= "Allusion"} OR {Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal> AND Relationship= "Echo"}

If you don't want to distinguish by relationship type you can simplify the search string to just be:

{Label Intertext WHERE Source~<Gen-Mal>}

Poking around is often a good way of learningSmile

That was a fantastically helpful tip, Graham. It has allowed me to create a visual filter that adds a capsule stating where the OT reference is and sets the text to subtle italics. It makes Hebrews 11 light up like an extremely insightful Christmas tree!

Whilst we're on this subject, is there a way I can reverse the process so that when I am reading the Old Testament I can apply a visual filter showing where OT verses appear in the New Testament?

Many thanks!

{Label Intertext WHERE Target~<Matt-Rev> } will return OT hits where the verses are quoted in the NT if that is what you mean

Excellent, thanks, Graham! I've now managed to reverse the process so that OT passages which are targeted in the NT are set to italic and given a capsule with the NT book reference.

If anyone is interested, I've published the visual filter and highlighting palettes here:

https://faithlife.com/logos-visual-filters/documents

There are three documents that you need:

  1. NTUOT
  2. Old Testament and Apocryphal Sources
  3. New Testament Targets

Enjoy!
