Matt Stephens:
Where is the NIV?!

Not currently available on mobile devices due to licencing restrictions.

Logos is discussing this with Zondervan

The NIV issue is one that comes up very often. Sometimes users will say that they would "even be willing to pay for it." I am certainly not privy to the negotiations between the two companies, but clearly Zondervan thinks you should pay and Logos does not. Bob's view is that if you have already paid for the document in its electronic format, you should be able to view that resource on any device. The question is then: Why doesn't Logos cave and simply allow users to purchase the NIV for their mobile devices if they want to? I think the answer is this: If Logos caves with Zondervan, why wouldn't every other publisher demand the same thing? Then we would be in a situation where NONE of our resources, still under copyright, would be available to us on our mobile devices without repurchasing them! In my mind, this is an issue of Logos looking out for our best interest... wether we like it or not! Smile

How can you use the word clearly  when you are speculating? I doubt this is the issue at all, but I have no guess as to what the issue actually is. I do know Zondervan hasn't required the NIV to be repurchased on mobile platforms elsewhere.

Because, clearly, this is what Bob and others at Logos have been saying for months now... Zondervan wants us to purchase the books for each platform... Logos says that we already have purchased them.  Most of us do not have several thousands of dollars to repurchase our library's just so that we can have them on a new device.

Bob has said this, so it is clearly, fair to state such.

Rev. Todd, my apologies. Either I missed this official explanation or I simply forgot it was made.

So, assuming the issue is with Zondervan, isn't it odd that they seem to be singling out Logos over this issue when it's clearly been allowed on other platforms. In fact, I have the NIV on three different platforms that I can access both on my MacBook Pro as well as on my iPad or iPhone--all in native apps (as opposed to web apps) and all texts that I paid for once on each platform. The whole situation seems rather bizarre, doesn't it?

I don't think I am speculating. Bob has stated his view that he feels our resources should be available to us on any & every platform we have. In another thread, he clearly lays blame with another "party:"

Bob Pritchett:
You're asking the wrong party in this transaction. ;-)

From Joe Miller, we know that the other party is Zondervan. When asked if the NIV will come to the Logos iOS app, he replied:

Joe Miller:
As soon as Zondervan gives Logos permission, yes.

You can read more HERE

You said that you "know Zondervan hasn't required the NIV to be repurchased on mobile platforms elsewhere." Do you mean from non-profit organizations or commercial businesses? I do not know of any commercial Bible software program, where you can buy the NIV to be read on your computer, and then read on a mobile device. Even if they do allow this, they don't have to extend the offer to Logos. And apparently they are not.

Sorry - You replied before I could finish mine Smile

The one question I want to know: these "platforms" that you reference, are they bible software programs or ebook readers? And are they owned by Zondervan?

It's both Bible software and eReaders.

  1. I have the NIV, TNIV, NiRV, and 2011 NIV in Accordance, which I can read both on the Mac application and the iOS application.
  2. I have the TNIV and 2011 NIV on the Kindle platform, which I can read in the Kindle app on my Mac (available in the Mac app store or as a direct download from Amazon) the Kindle iOS app on my iPad and iPhone, and on my Kindle.
  3. And I have the 2011 NIV for the Nook platform, which I can read on my Mac via the Nook software for the Mac (downloadable from the B&N website), my iPad and iPhone via the iOS apps, and on my dedicated Nook.

(Yes, I have an iPad, Kindle, and a Nook. What can I say? I like ebooks.)

So, one is dedicated Bible software, and the others are more mainstream ebook platforms; but software features and capability differences of the two aside, it's the same issue (reading an etext on a traditional computer platform vs. a mobile device) regardless. I agree with your previous statement that just because Zondervan allows one platform to share texts across platforms, doesn't mean they have to do it for another, but it is weird business practice, don't you think?

Hi Kevin! Welcome to the forums. Smile

Unfortunately this title isn't mobile enabled, which means the publishers have not granted you permission to use your Logos license to view this resource on mobile apps. If an agreement between Logos and the publisher can be reached, the resource will appear in your mobile library.

When I am traveling with my IPhone4 16GB and do not have internet access can I still access my resources - at least those I have already downloaded?

Yes. The purpose of downloading resources is to access them while offline. Word studies & various search capabilities are not available due to these features using the Logos servers.

I'm not sure which one you are talking about... I have one available now by Zondervan.

Ahh. I see the problem. The website has been redone and the icons are no longer used… I don't know if they will return or not. FWIW - This resource IS mobile enabled, and the product page you linked to reflects this. Under the rating section, it says: Runs on Windows, Mac and mobile.
