Hi, I just purchased a new IPad with 512gb or memory, yet I'm incapable of doing one single thing with the darn thing. The logos app kicks me out and freezes up right up from the very beginning.

With my old iPad (128gb), I used to use Faithlife with some inconveniences, although I had to wait a minute or so every time I looked at one of my notes. Now I can't use it at all even though I have a whole lot more memory than before.

What can I do? My library is very large.

Thanks,

Joseph

When I purchased a new iPad some years back, Logos required a new installation to work.

For clarification: That isnt 512 GB of memory, but 512 GB of storage.

Having more storage will do nothing for the problems you indicate. If you have a short bed truck loaded to the brim and it has troubles going up hill, swapping it out for a long bed truck (all other things being equal) won't help you any in trying to get up the hill.

Well let's start there. Are you trying to download your entire library? If so, that is strongly not recommended. Do you have very large note files? If so, how many pages would the largest one(s) be if you printed them out?

I didn't understand what you were saying at first... you mean, you can't set up the iPad as a "restore from backup" and get Logos to work. I concur that you should not try that. If for some reason you do want to "restore from backup" for other reasons, you should still delete the app and start from scratch.

Never mind, I got your e-mail that was addressed to someone.

Sorry.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was more memory, not more storage. Anyway, when I installed the app, it did not give me an opportunity to choose what parts of my library I don't want.

How do I do that? All I want is a few bibles, some commentaries and all my notes on my preferred bible (NASB)

Your entire library (or nearly) <should> be available "in the cloud" (online only). Depending upon a number of circumstances, Logos may have thought this was a previous installation and started to download the resources you had downloaded previously. Do you have reason to think that is the case?

If you want to check to see what is downloaded, you can either put the device into "airplane mode" OR you can use the syntax local: in the library. I typically leave that syntax in my library so that I just have a list of downloaded books to select from.

You can't choose which notes download... they will ALL download. No exceptions.

I talked to customer services. A lady told me that I have to "hide" many of the resources I don't want on my computer first. After I do that, I could access my iPad logos without a problem.

The issue I have is that I use my logos on my laptop all the time which allows me to choose what I have at any given moment. However, for the iPad I don't need to access all my resources, but she told me that I can't separate my iPad resources from what I have from my computer unless I hide them on my laptop (iCloud?).

In this case, logos on my iPad is completely useless since it doesn't work because of the enormous number of resources I have. All it does is to either freeze or kick me out.

My question is, what do people do when they want to use their iPad but their resources are just too big?

What she told you is wrong for what you are trying to achieve - you have control over which resources you download to the mobile app and you don't have to hide them to achieve that. I have about 5000 resources in the desktop app and only over 200 downloaded to the mobile app and both apps behave nicely and I only hide what I don't want to see anywhere.

Like JT advised, use the syntax local: in the library to see which resources are downloaded to the mobile app. From there you can remove the ones you don't want by clicking on the 'i'  to the right of each resource and choosing Remove from popup menu.

Alternatively, you can sort your library by Devices and manage your removals and additions to the mobile app from there (see right panel for each resource)

Again, that isn't the issue! I have over 8,000 resources and I know others with much larger libraries. If your resources are downloaded to your device, that is a different issue and still unrelated (unless the app is crashing because it is still trying to download the resources).

Wait, wait, wait ... that's not making sense.  If you hide resources on your computer it essentially deletes them from the computer and you have no access to them from the computer - unless you unhide them which can be a very time intensive task.

Loading the Mobile Reader App on the iPad does not incur an automatic download of you entire library.

Are you attempting to restore the Mobile Reader App from a backup on your computer (iTunes) or iCloud?

Look, all I did was to get the app from the store and download it. I chose my favorite bible alongside with Faithlife Commentary which was already there from my previous device that copied it to my new iPad.

Once I opened my Faithlife app, I went to my resources like you have in the picture, but my application froze. I started it up again, went to my library one more time and it says I have 2,858 resources, but none are downloaded. It froze once again. I started it up again, but everything is too slow to even read a few passages from John.

I called customer services and this guy told me that I have more than 1,000 notes on my NASB. He said the device cannot deal with so many notes, so unless I remove them, I will not able to use my mobile device with logos.

It's crazy.

What I noticed is that all my resources are available even though have not downloaded them to my iPad.

If I pick one that I have not downloaded, and search for it, it immediately comes up.

No, I'm not attempting to do anything. All I did is go to the Apple Store, find Faithlife and downloaded it, but it appears that all my resources are available (2,858) even though I have not downloaded anyone of them.

Like I said in my previous post, I can access anyone of my resources by simply typing it on my library.

OK.  This is new information we didn't have before and may help.  I don't have that many notes so we need to wait for another user with similar notes and using an iPad to look at this.  I would not hide resource quite yet until we can determine if or what impact there is with 1000 notes on the NASB.

EDIT:  I just noticed a detail in the post I missed.  You mention that you got "the app from the store and download it" and later indicate that you chose your bible "which was already there from my previous device that copied it to my new iPad."  Did you do a restore from an iTunes or iCloud backup?

The freezing has absolutely nothing to do with the number of resources you have "in the cloud." If you were in the process of downloading them all, that would be a different situation. I have 8,216 without issue.

Again, the issue isn't resources/books, but rather the note documents. I am unsure how the suggestion to hide books came up, but that is unrelated and undesired. I believe there is one of two issues here (or a combination thereof):

  1. Your notes haven't finished downloading and your performance will stink until they do.
  2. You are experiencing "large note syndrome." The mobile apps don't handle large note documents well. It does sound like that may be the case for you.

Do you know the behavior you are using to organize notes? NOTE: the desktop and mobile have the same schemas, but how you change those differs from desktop to mobile.

If you have 1,000 notes in a single notes file, that can be a large problem. Unless you have some other problem causing this freeze, you may want to consider breaking that humungous file into several smaller ones.

I guess I have to learn how to save notes some other way. What I have been doing is highlighting one passage or one verse, add a personal note to it or copy and past part of a commentary that explains what the passage means. I use a specific icon that let's me see immediately what I have written as soon as I hover over it.

However, I have notes on one particular translation only (NASB). The rest don't have any.

When you access other resources does the Mobile Reader App work correctly?  Any performance issues?

No issues whatsoever. Big Smile
