Cause of slow down?

I created a visual filter the other day and inadvertently

all text

all resources

Gen- Rev

This had the effect of highlighting the text of every reference in every volume. (In my case 13,000+ volumes.)  this, actually was pretty cool as it made the verse references stand out. But, I am thinking that it slowed down logos and the rest of my computer.

Two questions:

1) Am I right in assuming that this would cause my computer to slow down, not only in the initial creation, but also whenever I bought a new resource and, seemingly, much of the time.

2) Would there be a way to do this--make all references in all resources stand out in yellow without slowing my computer down.

I think it would slow down startup times - but shouldn't have a major impact after that.

But I haven't tried it so wouldn't be sure!

I can't immediately think of one, sorry.

  1. Yes, this will slow down Logos (by starting a search that will take a long time to run) every time you open a resource every time you run the program. Particularly if you have a HDD (not SSD) this will impact other programs running on your computer by performing a lot of disk I/O.
  2. No, there is currently no way to do this. It's an idea that's been suggested in the past (e.g., searching for <Bible *> to colour all Bible references) and is on our list of potential future search enhancements, but there's no good workaround right now. It would be best to delete this VF document (disabling it in individual resources is not sufficient).

If I have VFs checked, then yes, it slows my computer down significantly and not only at startup (anytime I open a new resource that the VFs target). So yes, I expect it will.

That's one of the ironies of the software, that one of its most powerful tools makes it unwieldy to use.

I've lost track of what they used to call sympathetic highlighting, but it will do so in an active search or on click-and-highlight, if set up right.

I don't think it can be done with VFs. I was told to delete a bunch of mine a while back when I was complaining about slow responses.

------------EDIT------------

Bradley beat me to it a bit...this was exactly what I was told a year or three back in the same situation.

My thanks to the various MVPs. Without them Logos would have died early. They were the only real help available.

I have deleted all visual filters and it seems to be running faster.

Correction: Having VF documents for that resource,  whether they're checked or unchecked, will slow Logos down.

Bradley Grainger (Faithlife):

Thanks for the clarification and for posting the old thread, which I couldn't find.  Helpful.
