MJ. Smith:

David Taylor Jr:
the option to choose which version they use, or, as some have suggested, choose your own colors.

I personally hate this sort of option - it takes a great deal of time and effort that I would rather see spent elsewhere - like getting certain interactives working. But priorities are personal and I understand why some would be fine with the expenditure of resources on colors.

Actually my wish, like you, is that they had spent it on other priorities and left it alone to begin with. Wink

Started working on a palette that has close to the original colors.

I agree this should not habe been changed but I do find it interesting to see people complaining about FL changing something for the sake of it. I’ve complained for many years about that very thing and have been told off for doing so by some of the people who are now complaining.

We are making this change to unify colors across all platforms (coming soon to mobile).

Agreed.

Adam, I am curious, what was the thinking in changing the colors to begin with?

Yes, please!

The desktop platform has been around a lot longer and I‘m guessing it has more users than the web platform. The web should conform to the desktop, not the other way around.

That's a good idea...and with the notes/highlights bulk updater, you should be able to bring your orange highlights to your desired custom orange.

There are two mains reasons for updating the highlighting colors. One is stylistic; the old palette hasn’t been changed since Logos 4, and we wanted to update in keeping with the general color scheme of the Logos 8 style changes. This is less “conforming to the web app” and more “all apps are conforming to a new style.”

The underlying reason for choosing this palette is functional. The new highlight palette is less saturated and lighter, so there is more contrast between the highlight and black text. This provides better readability when put behind black text (which is the primary use case for highlighting). An unintended consequence is that the lighter colors have LESS contrast on the sepia/yellowish toned page color Jack is using.

We are going to revert the change for the time being, and take time to consider if we can adjust the palette to meet both needs in a later version.

Hmmm, I have not seen any change in colors- the only new thing showing is an 'erase' button.

Has this been a regular complaint? If it is an accessibility issue, why not just put an accessibility feature in rather than disrupt all other users?

I understand that if you were talking about the way the program itself looks. However, highlighters, particularly the natural highlighters, were designed to look like real-world highlighters. Real world highlighters have not changed, just saying :)

I appreciate this. I would say, given the backlash that came from some when L8 was released about stylistic changes, I would be careful about making such changes, again, for the sake of making changes.

In your consideration don't forget the number of forum users who did not get involved in this thread - either because they didn't care or they liked the newer version. It is important to listen to those with a complaint but we don't know how much their settings contributed to the problem.

I remember conversations on the forums from the Logos 4 era about highlighting colors. Some people preferred the really bright garish ones from L3 (Libronix), which were jokingly called the "Christmas tree" effect. They were toned down already once for Logos 4, so this look appears to be further "pastelizing" the palette.

I agree that you shouldn't change the color scheme of user-selectable elements (highlighter pens) out from under people. Sure, make changes in non-user-selectable UI colors to standardize on a new look if you want. But if you want to change the default highlighter colors, at least keep the colors existing users have already selected, and broaden the options of what can be chosen for colors. Color is a very powerful memory aid, and if you change something a person is used to in Bible study, it can throw them off significantly.

Here's an example that was snickered at for the "Christmas tree" look on this thread:

KS4J was able to a make a pretty garish-looking example even with the new more muted colors in L4 here.

There are some lovely examples of bright colors used for Highlighting and Visual Filters here:

One very practical reason not to change the colors is someone would have to update the wiki pages that show the old color scheme.

Oh dear!  I really liked the new colors, finding the text easier to read.

It seems like it was several years ago, but at one time a FL employee took the time to ask about desired changes to highlights. Unfortunately nothing came of it. 😬

As you make changes to the highlighting colors, please keep in mind those who are (semi-)color blind (about 8% of men). We prefer high contrasts and don't worry too much about the color.
