Hi Logos Community!

I apologize in advance if I have posted this question in the wrong location. Hopefully you can redirect me if it's better suited for another venue.

I was getting acquainted with the figurative language search function. There is a phrase in Acts 27, in which Paul states that “not a hair” of any of the passengers on the boat will perish. I used the Passage Guide to find the Figurative Language section, and I wanted to find other instances of this phrase. Essentially, I wanted to uncover all instances in scripture where "hair falling" or "hair being harmed" is used to denote someone incurring damage. Unfortunately, the figurative guide only brings up the one instance from Acts mentioned above - even after clicking “Search” besides this phrase. Yet the metaphor of "not a hair" being harmed, or falling to the ground, etc, is a common phrase, found both in the old and new testament. Is there another method I should be using to search for this figurative language if my intent is to find its use throughout the entire Bible? I am aware of the “Search” function, but understand that the text has already been tagged and that I should be able to find the phrase being used this way using the figurative language guide, rather than running a complex query for the word "hair."

Thanks kindly for your help!

If doing a search from the Context Menu for Figurative Language, you will find one that states "Hyperbole", and provides a Search term {Section <FigurativeLanguageCategory = Hyper>}. Modify that to:-

hair WITHIN {Section <FigurativeLanguageCategory = Hyper>}

and it will provide two NT results.

Thanks Dave - much appreciated! Do you suggest a particular course on writing search queries? I feel like Logos' UI is very user friendly, but you can actually get a lot more done in the search box using syntax (kind of like using Linux via the terminal instead of the GUI). Sadly, I have no idea where to start learning the search syntax.

Correct! But it is a steep learning curve from 'basic' queries to a Figurative Language query and similar datatype queries.You can learn about Logos from this wiki and the Search section will bring you to Search Help. Look at Advanced Searching for Datatype queries. Detailed Search Help will provide more explanation/examples for the basic searches.

Great - I'll check out your page as well! Still getting my feet wet w/ Logos as a whole, so this will take some time. But I intend to proceed from the basic training courses to your material.
