I am posting a log as well. I looked and both mine and Thomas' log and it appears a common denominator may be the warning for something called "Syndicationutility". That appears to be generating a server error.

Your log file contains the line:
Unexpected HTTP response when accessing '.http://www.logos.com/rdf/?file=columns-4.0〈=en': 500 Internal Server Error

It's possible that the logos.com server did return that error code in the past (and maybe that's what started the problem), but the issue now is that IE (strictly speaking, the underlying WinInet library) is caching that error code and now won't connect to logos.com.

To fix it, first close Logos 4.

Then in Internet Explorer, choose Tools > Internet Options from the menu; on the "General" tab, under "Browsing history", click the "Delete..." button. Clear all the checkboxes except for "Temporary Internet Files" and click Delete. Be sure to clear the "Preserve Favorites website data" checkbox.

When you restart Logos, the home page should load as normal. If it's still missing blogs, press F5 to force a refresh of the home page.

This time I flushed the cache in Firefox also, and then redid the IE steps as well.

Might want to find a way to not make flushing the IE cache necessary for this one, it seems to affected quite a few people. It's happening in MAC also, and AFAIK there's no IE there.

After Bradley posted his message regarding how to correct this, I did exactly what you did. I had the same results you had initially. Then I ran a program I use periodically to clean everything out called Free Internet Eraser (http://download.cnet.com/Free-Internet-Eraser/3000-2144_4-10262217.html) and reopened L4 and everything works fine now.

It's the untechnical users I'm concerned about. What is happening to the thousands (?) of Logos users who (A) do not read these forums and won't, but (B) are still experiencing this problem?

I had to close Logos before clearing caches or it wouldn't work.

That's a symptom of the error above, since Logos think's it can't access the internet because of that error, it isn't offering you the choice of changing the settings for internet material.

Line 376 shows the same error that Bradley mentioned earlier, which is why he suggested clearing the cache.

Well, when I cleared it, I only cleared the actual "cache" in Firefox, but cleared everything in Internet Explorer (since I never use it anyway). Do I need to clear out my cookies too?

Yay, I'm fixed! A couple of things to add to the list of things to try in case anyone else runs into this:

1) I went to the command prompt and ran "ipconfig /dnsflush" without the quotes

2) I went into "Internet Options" and then "Settings" under Browsing History. I set the "Disk space to use" setting down to the minimum, because I read that wininet would force a flush of its DNS cache when it hit the size threshold. This disk cache is largely unnecessary for anyone with broadband anyway, so I tend to keep mine low, but hadn't yet set it down on this computer.

3) I changed the "Check for newer versions of stored pages" setting from "Automatically" to "Every time I visit the webpage"

4) Upon starting Logos back up, the homepage still only had local content, so I hit F5 to force a refresh. I probably should have tried this between each step since I now have no idea which of the changes actually resulted in the problem being fixed, but oh well.

Most definitely...though if they are populating via the wininet library which, in turn, derives its settings through the Internet settings, it may effectively be out of their control. I'm guessing that the setting that made the difference was forcing it to check for a new version of the page on every visit instead of "Automatically".

Slightly off topic... Logos might consider making the identification for Logos staff more obvious in the forums. As I mentioned earlier, that Logos logo underneath your name doesn't jump right out and say what your role is. In fact, for newbies like me, it didn't even occur to me that it meant Logos staff. I just thought it was a cute avatar, maybe someone who is a fan of Logos. Something written, such as expanding your name to "Bradley Grainger, Logos tech support." Even better, somehow put that text in the margin, where it will catch the eye (although that would probably mean changing the code for the forum software... oh well, one can always dream.)

We're well past 4.1 beta 7, but I still have this problem. Hasn't changed a bit since this discussion started back in August/2010. I'm now on 4.2 SR-2 (4.20.4.8828.)

To be specific:
* Aside from the constant headers, the Home page has a Bible passage and "Book of the Day." That's it.
* The Customize dialog has the following greyed out, unable to change:
- in the Features section: Recent reading lists.
- in the Content section: everything except Devotionals, Excerpts.

Yes, I have deleted the internet files as suggested. Yes, I have selected "Use internet - Yes." Yes, I am online. Yes, I have commanded "update now," and no further updates are available.

As you requested, here is the file named "Logos4.log." Curiously, all the entries are dated December 20, 2010; but I have used Logos many time since then. The file was located in the folder \Logos log files. [On this Windows XP system, "My documents" is set to \.].
That is the only location on all my partitions where a file by that name is located.

We're well past 4.1 beta 7, but I still have this problem. Hasn't changed a bit since this discussion started back in August/2010. I'm now on 4.2 SR-2 (4.20.4.8828.)

Since this log file was created when you still had 4.1 SR-4, we should get an up-to-date log file from you. To enable logging for one session, hold the Ctrl key down when you open Logos 4 and keep it held down until the Sign in window appears. Click on the Sign in button to open Logos 4 and logging will be enabled. Once the home page is loaded, click on the Customize button to view the options, then close it. Press F5 to refresh the home page, then close Logos 4. Before you restart it, attach the Logos4.log file in your \My Documents\Logos Log Files folder to your reply in this thread. For more information on getting and posting logs see: http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging.

Edit: Since you no longer have a beta version, you may also want to contact Customer Support for help by phone or by remote connection to your computer. They can be reached Mon-Fri from 6am to 5pm Pacific time at 800-875-6467.

When I do this, it gives me the error message "Unable to connect to Logos.com." This happens repeatedly. Yet when I start Logos normally, seconds before and seconds after the logging method, it begins normally.

P.S. So that means the log file I just sent in the other message was created by a normal start of Logos, not the above method. It came AFTER I tried the logging method, so that must attempt have triggered the save-log routine for the next session.

Edit: Do you have to authenticate through a proxy server to sign in to Logos 4? If you do, are Proxy settings entered in the Sign in dialog? Do you generally work offline?

Sorry, I didn't see your addendum until I came back here to see what happened.

Proxy server? No, just a straight connection through a wireless router and modem.

Work offline? I don't think so; the internet connection is on 24/7.
