Moving Pre-Pubs to Community Pricing

In the very near future, we will be moving several Pre-Pubs to the Community Pricing page.

These are all large, public domain books and collections that have been on Pre-Pub for many months (and even years, in some cases).

We're still convinced, however, that these books should be built in our format, and we think many of our users feel the same way. So we've decided to move them to Community Pricing to see what you—our users—really think. Place a bid if you want to see these important public domain works move into production.

If you have placed a Pre-Pub order for a collection that has been moved over to Community Pricing, your Pre-Pub order will be canceled and you will need to place a bid. In other words, your Pre-Pub order will not automatically move over to Community Pricing.

Remember, it's often in your best interest to place a bid at the highest price you would be willing to pay. If you're new to Community Pricing, or you're unsure what to bid, you might want to check out A Bidding Strategy for Community Pricing.

Keep an eye on the Community Pricing page in the coming days for all the books!

How does this work? Does that mean we will be able to purchase the collections at a lower price only because more people will have interest in them?

Agree. One on the top of the Order page for those affected, could also be a good idea. Might save you a couple of phone calls -- and the Forum a couple of threads -- from people who fear their orders have been lost when the new website launched.

Unfortunately, once a book leaves Community Pricing, it is no longer possible to pre-order it at that price.

Question: When did you send the email on the losing bid?

And when did that customer call – later the same day?, the next day? or six months later?

so why not send the email and give them one week to accept the final price? (Only to low bidders!)

Maybe they placed the bid two years ago and are not a regular viewer so don’t tell them that they lost but give all of the low bidders one week to accept the final price?

Using the example above they will never buy at $15 but might at $6. Question: was $4 the most likely bid two years ago when they placed it? After all the person who bid $20 is getting it for $6. [we are to bid high BUT what was high two years ago?]

Those of us that are watching Community Pricing normally have several days between when the book goes over 100% and when it leaves. So why not an email telling the low bidders to accept the final price and giving them a week to decide? (After waiting two years – what is a week?)

That would change the rules somewhat but might be more Christian?

Thanks for your post. I am not at all inclined to agree with you! There may be exceptions, but generally if you don't pay the piper you don't get the tune. We have been advised often to pay the highest price we are willing to pay. If one said that the highest price one was willing to pay was $4.00, then why should we and Logos assume that that one is willing to pay even $6.00. We fellow bidders are counting on each other to bid the highest price we are willing to pay so that we can as a team bring a book into production. The whole community pricing situation might even be in jeopardy, if lot of bidders should deliberately bid low as a routine modus operandi. Things would drag on longer than Barnes has been doing. This also brings to mind the thought that Logos makes no money on the “break even” of producing this book, but is willing to “break even” to have a resource that is salable.

That is if you bid $25 on something that goes for $100 – too bad.

But what if your bid was for $90 or $95? Maybe?????

Also a reminder that Dave mentioned that some of the bids might be two or more years old. How old are some of the bids on Barnes? What was a reasonable bid back then?

One point that Brother Milford brought up was bid rigging “if lot of bidders should deliberately bid low as a routine modus operandi” But others on the forum have stated that they bid on everything and they bid very high implying that they plan to pull out if the price is too high.

I've always received an email saying that I bid too low to get the crossed the line price so that I can raise it before the following Friday if I so desire. Sometimes I have raised my bid and it made it down to my original price anyway Sometimes I didn't and it got away but then I wasn't that interested in it anyway. For me the current system seems to be working fine.

This is a great move on the part of Logos. I went with the projected price on almost all of them, a little higher on resources that I unquestionably want. There are public domain works that remain on pre-pub (and on my order page) that I would love to see go to community pricing, but they must be more popular and therefore command a higher price.

I believe your posts are based on a misunderstanding. According to http://www.logos.com/communitypricing/about an e-mail is sent out before the bidding is closed, giving everyone a second chance to raise their bids:

"3. Watch the real-time chart for the titles. When any point on the revenue curve breaks the production cost line, an email will be sent to everyone who placed a pre-order for that title. The email will announce that costs have been covered and specify the best price. You will be notified at this time if your pre-order is below the best price. New pre-orders can still be placed and existing pre-orders can still be changed at this time, so the price could go even lower!

4. On the next Friday that is at least two days (48 hours) from the first time a title's production costs are covered, Community Pricing will end for that title and pre-orders will be confirmed at the current best price. The title will be moved to the Pre-Publication page with a status of "Under Development." This means you always have at least 48 hours after "breaking the production cost line" in which other people can see the curve and enter orders that could lower the best price even more!"

This is good and right. After closing, however, it should be closed. Why? Because if all these people who now suddenly wake up a week too late and want to buy for $6, had instead placed their $6 bids before the deadline, everyone might have gotten the book for $5! If they don't want to help in bringing the price down for others -- in spite of an extra e-mail urging them to do so -- why should they profit from the efforts of those others? A second chance is fine; a third would be unfair to everyone else.

(To clarify even further: there are two e-mails sent out: one shortly before the bidding closes, giving everyone a second chance; one shortly after the bidding has closed, telling them their bid has been accepted or rejected. You are quoting from this second e-mail.)

Last I heard, bidding closed on the next Friday at noon, whether that was 6 days away or 20 minutes away.

If the price crosses 100% between Friday 12:00:01 and the following Wednesday at 12:00 PM (noon) it will close on Friday of that week at 12:00 PM.

If the price is after Wednesday 12:00:01 but before the Friday 12:00:00 it will close the following Friday.

Thus there is a minimum of 2 days before a title closes and a maximum of 9.
