Loretta,

Open up the Search dialog and choose a Bible search. Choose Search then All Bible Text, then Old Testament (the word in this case doesn't appear in the NT but you can choose Entire Bible if you want to), then select the Bible version(s) you want to search, then type Philistine in the search box and hit Enter. This should find all the uses of the word, including the word Philistines. If you don't see the plural term, click on the arrow by the large Search icon and select Match All Word Forms.

What you may notice is that you will get different word counts depending on the Bible version you try. This has mainly to do with differences in the underlying Hebrew texts used in the different translations.

You don't really know at this point which is the earliest use of the word, since that has to do with when the books were written, but in the order of the books of the Bible (both the Jewish and the Christian) you will see the first mention is in the book of Genesis.

Hi Loretta.

To find when Philistine occurs in the Bible, you need a Bible search against the translation of your choice.

Below, I have clicked on the search icon (magnifying class in top left-hand corner), selected Bible search and typed in "philistine". I am just about to select the word "Philistine" from the drop-down menu and then carry out the search

When I do that and click the blue arrow to the right of the search box I get the results shown below:

This (extract from the results) shows that the first occurence is in Exodus 13:17 and that there are 62 occurences.

If I select "match all word forms"

I will get words like "Philistines" as well as the singular and this shows the first occurence in Genesis 10:14 with 277 of them

Hope this helps.

If this doesn't answer your question, please post back.

Graham

EDIT: I hadn't noticed Mark's reply - but at least it demonstrates his point about getting slightly different results depending on the translation you use!

This is the easy, English based way to do it. If you want Hebrew I can show you that too.

1) Open a search window, select Bible search, pick your favorite Bible and Limit the search to the OT (click on the blue text to limit the search parameters)

2) click the Tile menu and Select Print/Export

3) Choose to print the results or export them to a Word document etc.

If you have any questions about this please ask!

Thanks so much. I should have known that the word Philistine is not in the N.T. I'm learning though.
