Good day,

I saw (and pre-ordered) the Qumran Biblical Dead Sea Scrolls Database, but now I am wondering if this can be used alone as I've got no other Logos software.

Can anyone please help me out on this?

Shalom

Shalom!

As far as I know, you can use Logos with just one resource installed (in your case the Qumran Database). I have to say however that Logos becomes more effective when your library grows.

Did you know that the Logos 4 engine is available as a free download? For more information: http://www.logos.com/support/faq

P.S. If you happen to know Afrikaans: Logos-sa offers a product with a number of resources in Afrikaans and English.

Thanks Hendrik-Jan, I am busy downloading the Logos 4 Core and am really looking forward to the release of the DSS. Thank you also for the reference to the SA site - I will definitly browse their website as well.

Can anyone perhaps give me an indication of a due date for this DSS database?

Shalom

It's really hard to say. It look's like Logos has been working on it for a while, but this project is undoubtedly a complex one. Projects involving the morphological tagging tend to take longer than say a trade paperback. Also, Logos doesn't usually give release dates until the project is near completion and even then sometimes the date slips. Based on the ship dates I'm seeing for my Preorders I would not expect it in the next three months.

If there is not a date, no one knows.

FYI... This is what I do when Logos does provide a date on when the book will be available to download.  I take the time frame between the current date and the date within the status date and double it, and add a month.  I personally have never seen Logos come close to a single production date.

I forgot to mention that there are a few resources that can be downloaded from the Logos site for free. You can find a list of all free resources here: http://wiki.logos.com/Free_Logos_Books

(Note: Libronix is the predecessor program of Logos 4).

When I look at my Preorders I sincerely hope it will take that long Stick out tongue

Hi guys, thanks for all the replies. I see where you're going and I'll wait patiently. At least this resource status says "under development" and it is green, so I guess it won't be years.

Thanks also for all the references, I'll definitely look into it.

Actually, it  hasn't changed status for a few years now.

O no! Please tell me you are not serious?

Who else has been watching this source's status?

I urgently need this for studies, but if it hasn't changed status for some years, then I need to know in order to look elsewhere.

Anybody know of any other source for the Biblical texts of the DSS - spesifically electronic please?

Dr. Paul, you might try to call to Logos and ask for Bill Nienhuis, the Director of the Publisher Relations Office or somebody else from the actual production department and ask about the status of the work on that product.

There is only one such database at the moment. It is sold by a competitor whose specialty is with the Mac platform.

I share your feelings regarding the availability of this resource.

I've been looking forward to this resource since I placed my prepub order in November 2007.

Wow! That is really quite discouraging. I have sent an e-mail to their customer support enquiring about a release date. I will post their answer here for others as well.

In the mean time, does anybody know of the "The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible: The Oldest Known Bible Translated for the First Time into English" is available in any electronic format?

Does anybody know if the DJD series is available in any sort of electronic format?

Shalom

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but here is a reference work by Brill.  It looks as though it only covers the non-Biblical books.

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible: The Oldest Known Bible Translated for the First Time into English is available electronically from another Bible software company.  Forum guidelines do not allow me to post the link, but if you email me I will give it to you.  My email is  mdolfan at sbcglobal dot net.

I do wish that Logos would offer this resource.  I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Logos also has other Dead Sea Scrolls resources on prepub you may be interested in:

As far as I know there are no such plans.

There is The Dead Sea Scrolls Library software. It includes only the non-biblical scrolls but you get scanned images of them as well. It does not include the introductions and apparatuses of DJD.

Thanks again for all the replies. As for the sectarian texts, I've got it it in various formats (simply due to bad advertising at the time, which didn't clearly state that it was non-biblical texts.

As for the Biblical texts of the DSS, yes, I was hoping for some new info to surface - especially on the DJD. I think I've got more or less all the info on what is available, but two criteria is prohibitive, i.e. (a) the electronic formats' pricing, and (b), the printed format is both too pricy and too voluminous. I simply haven't got space for 40 [large] volumes of printed material.

So basically what is needed, is the Biblical Qumran Texts in electronic format (due to physical space saved), depicting the original plates, clarified Hebrew, transliterated English and/or translated English - that doesn't cost and arm and a leg.

If you've got info on something like this, please mail me directly at paul at crossroadsministries dot co dot za?

Thank you guys

Shalom

PS. I forgot to mention - even in PDF format will do. Pretty please?

Just an update to my e-mail request to Logos support. Here is their reply;

Thank you for your email.  I have no other information than is posted at http://www.logos.com/product/5961/qumran-biblical-dead-sea-scrolls-database for this resource, at this time.  I can tell you that the more complex tagging that a resource may contain, the longer the resource takes to develop.

So we're still in the dark as far as the proposed EDA is.

Well, anyway, thanks again for all of you who have responded. I have looked at all the proposals, but I'm still stuck in the same boat as before.

Shalom

Woo hoo! Thought I was going have to climb down into cave #4 and dig the database out!
