B7 Mac Freezing on Biblical Places
Joshua 1, ESV, Lebanon
Right Click ... Places ... Biblical places
Biblical Places Appears
The ribbon with the dictionaries appears, then B7 stops a short time afterwards. The circular activity indicator stops as well.
Killing the process in Activity Monitor does not work (it goes from AM and the system 'Force quit' list but stays on my screen) but, the next time I went straight to the system menu 'force quit' and it did die immediately.
BTW. It seems a long time since I had to attach the logs ... the hardest part was remembering how ... I could not see the pinned instructions in the forum.
[Edit: wrong about the force quit ... nothing but a restart would kill it!]

I have not been able to reproduce this, I see the crash in your logs, but don't know how you got to this state.
Can you add any more details about what you had open before navigating to Biblical Places from the ESV?
Was Biblical Places already opened when you used the context menu to goto Biblical Places (Lebanon)?
Was there anything in your find filter for Biblical Places?
Can you reproduce this everytime, or was it a one time crash/hang?
The crash appears to be when we are updating hotspots for the different cities on the map.
Thanks
Glenn

The crash has happened four straight times.
I have a 'devotional' layout which, at the moment has the ESV in a panel, with things, places and people all open behind. I have a screen shot below of the crashed state, where Places has come to the fore, the dictionary references have been sorted, but the previous graphic ("Life of joseph) is still present. This screen shot is the crashed state.
I can load this layout and then trigger the crash directly from 'Lebanon'

I tried 'Euphrates' in the same verse and it crashed again (logs attached)

Just playing here ... seeing if I can add any more information that might help ...
I have tried typing directly into places rather than using the menus but the effect is the same.
I am wondering about the existing graphic, "Life of Joseph".
If I type Jerusalem then the dictionary entries and graphic thumbnails all appear as normal but since Jerusalem is part of the "life of Joseph" graphic then I would presume that it remains current. Selecting another thumbnail from the Jerusalem selection causes an immediate crash, ie trying to move away from "Life of joseph" seems to be an issue, not moving to another topic.
I can type another area and, so long as there is reason for the graphic to stay the same, all is fine. I can choose any region on the "Life of Joseph" map (Shechem, Jerusalem, Rameses, Memphis etc.) and the details change but the graphic remains the same since it can be reselected ... no crash. As soon as the graphic tries to change to another map then crash.E.g.- Type Memphis the graphic stays as the "Life of Joseph" infographic.
- Choosing one of the Photo Thumbnails then I see the photo.
- Returning to the "Life of Joseph" Graphic and then moving to a map thumbnail ... crash.
- Type Memphis the graphic stays as the "Life of Joseph" infographic.
- Choosing one of the Photo Thumbnails then I see the photo.
- Without returning to the "Life of Joseph" Graphic and but moving moving to a map thumbnail ... crash.
OK. I am not sure what that shows! The new information is that I can go to a photo without crashing but not to a map.Logs PostedSuggestions accepted!2017 15" MBP, iPad Pro

Excellent information! Thanks very much.
I still have not been able to reproduce this. I have added some additional logging in the area I see where you are getting the crash, but this won't be in until the next Beta release.
I'm wondering about your BiblicalPlaces resource files.
I have two.
Folder: /Users/<your login name>/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/<Logos hashed user name>/ResourceManager/Resources
BiblicalPlaces.lbsmps (Size: 1.3 MB Created: September 15, 2010)
BiblicalPlacesMaps.lbsmps (Size: 422.3 MB Created: September 15, 2010)
Can you post your sizes and creation dates for these two files? Right click each file (From Finder) and choose "Get Info" to see the size and creation date.
Thanks

BiblicalPlacesMaps.lbsmps 442.8Mb; Created 6October 2010 7:53; Modified 6 October 2010 7:54
I do not seem to have a BiblicalPlaces.lbsmps file.
The nearest that I have is BiblicalPlaces.lbsplc 1.4 Mb; Created 5 December 2010 13:18; Modified 5 December 2010 13:18
Hope this helps.
Thanks.

I had a typo on my part, the lbsplc is the correct extension. The file sizes and dates look ok. Did maps ever work for you? Do you remember when they stopped working?
I've added some logging that will be in the next Beta release. This should be released today, when you get the update, can you reproduce the crash and send new logs for me?
Thanks

Hi.
The mapping has always worked as far as I can remember, and it seemed break with the last Beta (B7).
I have just updated to the latest Beta. The crash happened in exactly the same place again but there were slight differences
1. It was faster in crashing (Headline: L4Mac is fast!). To be clearer, the dictionary ribbon was almost instantaneous and the the activity indicator froze almost as soon as it had begun.
2. It seemed to get further before the crash ... I now have one icon depicting additional maps at the bottom of the panel before the freeze.
I have attached the logs.
BTW. This might be unrelated (and probably is when I think about it but...) B7 and the latest beta would not update properly. They would start to download and then stop as, say, 10% progress. I downloaded the dmg directly and installed from that.
Regards
Martin.

Do you, by chance, have "Use secure virtual memory" enabled under System Preferences > Security? Tech Support has told us of reports that having this turned on can impact downloads negatively. By default it's off as shown in the screenshot below.

Why so I do!
I will turn it off and see what happens with the next update
Thanks Tom

I'm wondering if this setting affected the download of the place resources.
Can you move the two Biblical Place map files out of the resources folder to a temporary location and then run "Update Resources" from your command bar?

Sorry this seems like a bit of a ramble ...
- I changed the setting and reset the computer.
- I moved the two files out of the resources folder
- I ran L4 and it crashed (the log is attached). I have not delved into the log but I thing it was because my start-up layout has biblical places open and it could not find the data ... just my impression.
- I was able to close L4 and restart it with the cmd key, choosing the blank layout.
- Update resources
- After a while it declared that I needed 423.6 Mb of datas, click to download.
- The download got to 21% and stopped. Two hours at 21% ... time to assume that it was not going to happen. This tends to suggest that the security change did not work. As an incidental, I was checking my broadband speed this morning ... about 6 meg, so the 423 mb should have gone through in 1-20 minutes.
- Cancelling the download... the L4 updater relaunches L4. Neither of the two places files had returned and L4 is now saying to '422.3 Mb is available, click to download.
- Restarting the download this time it stops at 14%.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Martin.

I had same crash when I removed my place files. The layout wanted to load that panel/resource
You can put the resources back since your still having download issues.
Then I'd like to rebuild your index. Something is preventing these maps from loading properly.
"Rebuild index" in your command bar (no quotes)
Thanks
Glenn

O.K. Indexing has finished but the crash is still there (latest log attached).
Another thing that I have noticed, with the latest version, is that loading layouts will sometimes minimise L4 and then bring it out of the dock in a small 2 inch area in the bottom left. I have not seen this for some time. Possibly not related but might indicate something wrong on my system.

Martin.

Martin-
I'm stumped, I don't know why you are not getting any maps. From the image, it looks like you don't get any of the map previews either.
I'm curious to get a full set of debug logs, but you'll need to enable debug logging. Tom has posted instructions in this post
No need to run Tom's steps 5 and 6 (indexer). Just start Logos 4 and reproduce the crash and post the logs.
Thanks for your patience with this issue.

Have done .... 7851.Archive.zip
BTW the link in Toms instruction downloaded the sh file and not a gz file (or at least that is what OSX put in my download folder).
Thanks for all of you efforts

Martin-
Can you open to a blank layout and then type a command in the commandbar to try and bypass Egypt and Lebanon
Command: "open BiblicalPlaces to Rome"
I'm curious if this even loads. and if it does do you get any of the preview maps (along the bottom)? Crash when you click on one of them?
Thanks again
Glenn

Opening from a blank layout using "open BiblicalPlaces to Rome"
Loads the Map 'Paul's Trip to Rome', with thumbs below.
Clicking on an image thumb load the image.
Clicking on the "Paul's Trip to Rome" thumb returns there OK.
Clicking on another map thumb seems OK as well.
A sample of the other thumbs seem to work.
I typed Lebanon into the BP text box and it went to "Empires with Both Ancient and Modern State Boundaries" (which I noticed is also one of the "Paul's Trip" thumbs.). The Thumbs and maps seem to work fine.
Typing 'Rome' into the BP text box returns to Rome works fine.
Opening the ESV back to Joshua 1, and going to Lebanon works fine ... everything seems to work fine.
Final thoughts ... after a bit of clicking and searching I finally tracked down the resource containing the "Life of Joseph" graphic which was fine within the context of it's resource. Using Memphis as the search term, I located it in Biblical Places, which was OK, and it now allowed me to move away from it without a crash.
The last thing i can think of is can I recreate the original problem? Leaving "Life of Joseph" as the last used graphic, I closed biblical places, returned to the ESV Joshua 1, and then used the Lebanon context menu to relaunch the BP tool. It seemed to work.
Restarting L4Mac, going to joshua, trying the menu, BP loads with joseph and then moves to Lebanon ... no crash! There seemed to be a small hiccup in the rotation of the activity circle but then it seems sluggish since turning on the logging.
I have attached the logs ... but it seems to be working fine now (!)
Regards
Martin.

good news!
A while back you mentioned you had a layout that could trigger this crash, does that still trigger the crash?
0 -
Yes it does [:(]
I do not know if you have access to the layout but if you do then it is the one called 'Devotional'
I pretty much update this layout everyday. It is the same layout as the original screen dump, with Places, Things and People all open behind the ESV in the top central panel.

I can try to use your layout. Please compress and attach your layouts.db
/Users/<user name>/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Documents/<logos 4 encoded user>/LayoutManager/loyouts.db
We'll get this figured out.

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 12.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Arial}Thank you! I was able to use your layouts.db to load your layout and navigating to Lebanon caused a crash on my dev box, so I was able to debug and fix the issue.
It was a timing issue with loading the next 'place'.
I did not get it fixed in time for the 4.2a release but will be in the first 4.2a service release

We released 4.2a SR-1 yesterday (due to larger issue with indexing) but I think my fix was in that code.
Can you test out your Devotional layout with 4.2a SR-1?

Hi.
"Update Now" told me that there was no update.
I used feed://clientservices.logos.com/update/v1/feed/logos4-mac/beta.xml to get the latest, at least I think it is the latest. Your post says '4.2a SR-1', the feeds says '4.2a RC1' and the About dialogue box says 'Logos Bible Software 4.2a (4.21.5.0585) ' (No RC or SR)
Either way, the 4.21.5.0585 build has just crashed.

Try this link to install 4.2a SR-1 (v4.21.5.0790): http://www.logos.com/logos4mac. That version includes the crash fix.

Apparently the SR-1 did not get put on the beta channel.
If you want SR-1 you can set your update channel to stable, then run "Update Now"
We will be releasing more 'beta' updates, but I'm not certain when or how soon that will happen.
