BUG: Selecting text

1) Click before John 1:1.

2) Scroll down to the end of John.

3) Shift-click just after the last verse.

4) This should select the entire book of John -- so that one can, for example, apply a highlighting to it -- and I'm told that on PC it actually does that, but on my Mac it creates all sorts of funny selections, just not the one I want and expect.

Discovered while researching the answer to Stephen's first Hide 'n' Seek competition, and first described here. (And just now when I created that link I found that Mark Barnes had just posted and said that it's not entirely reliable on PC either, though certainly better than on Mac.)

I've tried this in both Mac and Windows Beta versions and it worked as expected and in the same way in both. More specifics as to how you're going about it may help, and a video may help as well. For a full book of the Bible, I found that it was easiest to click before John 1:1 (on same line), open the Contents Pane, click on Chapter 21 in Table of Contents, scroll down to end of chapter and Shift+click at end of verse 25 (again on same line).

OK, I finally figured a few things out -- of course after I first wrote this post, which means I had to rewrite all of it [:(].

• Doing it by scrolling seems to work (now). (But who wants to scroll a full book? Certainly not me who's got an inflamed finger.)

• Doing it the exact same way you did seems to work (but scrolling from Jn 21:1 is longer than scrolling from Acts 1, so I never tried that until just now).

• Doing it any of the ways I did try doesn't work. Here are the ones I can remember:

1) Click before Jn 1:1, click Acts in TOC, scroll up a little, and shift-click after Jn 21:25. Gives this result:

Doing it backwards -- clicking after Jn 21:25, clicking John in TOC, shift-clicking before Jn 1:1 -- results in:

2) Click, use the scrollbar "handle" to get as close as possible, scroll the last bit, shift-click.

3) Click, use the reference box to get to the new location, shift-click.

4) Click, use the back/forward arrow buttons to get to the new location, shift-click.

These last three are the ones I mainly used last time -- though I did experiment with scrolling as well (never thought of the TOC) -- and they usually gave similar results to above, though a couple of times I managed to get a few paragraphs highlighted. I'm not going to waste any more time trying it out, but my preliminary theory is that those may have been the times when I used method 2), and the highlighted paragraphs may have covered the part I scrolled past at the end.

Now, can you replicate? [:D]

(It's not fair that you immediately managed to find the only non-scrolling method that works, when I tried so many and none of them work! [:'(] )

Sorry about that. ) I'm also able to highlight the text using the wheel mouse to scroll down to the end and Shift_click, not using the TOC. However, I can replicate the problem in your screenshots following your step 1) above, and will submit a report to development.

Found another method that doesn't work -- but which would probably be the quickest if it did work:

5) a) Set the navigation choice to Book.

b) Click before John 1:1.

c) Hit shift-cmd-downarrow (just found that one -- very useful!).

d) [If necessary scroll a tiny bit upwards and] shift-click after John 21:25.

This issue is worse than ever. I now can't select text by any method whatsoever, except simple clicking and dragging, not even by the ones that worked above. Have tried in both 4.6 and 4.6a.

Have you tried making a selection at the beginning of John (e.g. select the first verse) and then scrolling and shift clicking?

Making a selection may be key because that will prevent the content from being unloaded from memory when scrolling forward.

I tried it earlier today, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Mostly the latter.

And either way, I shouldn't have to. Click>shift-click is a standard Mac command. I shouldn't have to figure out all sorts of alternative ways to do something as simple as selecting a text.

I'm sorry you're having a frustrating experience. To my knowledge this behavior is the same on Windows as on Mac. I hope this explanation helps give you some insight into why this is happening:

As you might imagine, we don't load an entire book's content into memory when you have it open. Our resources are broken up into articles (loadable chunks). As you scroll forward in a book, we load subsequent articles and we also unload previous articles. In fact, we generally keep around 3 articles loaded (or more if they are really short).

However, and this gets at the heart of my suggestion, when you have a selection we avoid unloading the content as long as you are scrolling (not jumping to a specific new location either through TOC or grabbing/moving the scroll indicator). This allows you to select and drag through multiple articles and not lose any of your selection.

All of that said, have you considered using the print/export option instead? It is much better suited to handling large blocks of resources due to the issues I described. I apologize if that doesn't help your use case, it's not clear what you wanted to do with your selection.

Again, doesn't work even for Philemon (or at least only occasionally).

Scrolling is out of the question if selecting anything longer than Philemon. As I have tried to tell Logos for over two years, the scrolling is awful. I scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll, and I get virtually nowhere in the process. To scroll through a book like John would probably need hundreds of scrolls. And, apart from the time issue, I have an inflamed finger (not made any better by Logos, I might add), so it wouldn't exactly be painless (or medically advisable).

There's simply a world of difference between how far I get on 'one scroll' in e g Safari or LibreOffice, and how far I get in Logos. The scrolling is so bad that I have never in all this time been able to read more than 5-10 pages in a day. What use is a Bible Study software when you can't even read in it?

Not exactly an option when you're trying to apply a highlight...

Here's another reason someone might want to select the text of a whole book: highlighting.
