OK - so I intend to answer my own question.
This forum gives me the chance to address a [small] pet peeve. Sometimes you may want to respond to someone, but only "Quote" part of their post. If you click on "quote," your screen will look like this:
What if you want to "quote" only part of the original post? The answer is that you redact the unwanted parts, but you must maintain the open and close remarks which let the forum know that you are quoting material. See below:

Instead, type your comments after the "/quote"
Another thing you might want to do is to either break up another user's comments into several "bite sized" chunks, or quote several users in the same post. For example:
Grandpa: That's right. When I was your age, television was called books. And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your father. And today I'm gonna read it to you.

Has it got any sports in it?
Grandpa: Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...

Doesn't sound too bad. I'll try to stay awake.
Grandpa: Oh, well, thank you very much, very nice of you. Your vote of confidence is overwhelming.

This is done by using the same formula over again within the post. If you are trying to comment on several users, have multiple tabs open so that you can use the old fashioned cut and paste. You can still format it, just change the user's name.
Nice thread, Alabama. But aren't we supposed to quote from books rather than from films here in Logos? Just kidding.
One thing on topic I noticed over there in our "unobstructed photos" thread was that the "copy-paste-quoting" killed the smiley in the pasted text and I had to reinsert it manually (editing the post, as I regularily forget to preview them).

Mick -
I think it was just an issue of me deleting too much. If you see smileys below, then it must work.

I guess you can do it that way... Otherwise it's much easier to simply select the part you want to quote
and then hit Quote.
Just be careful if there are several layers of quotes. Use Preview and make sure you don't end up attributing quotes to the wrong persons.

Thanks for the tip!
This was a helpful thread. A lot of people have these questions. Thanks for posting, Alabama.

A thumbs up from Rosie - You made my day!
Sometimes open same thread in several tabs so can quote more than one source. Highlight selected text in one tab, Quote, then copy and paste:

Likewise have learned to preview before posting (especially after copy and paste that tends to add some extra lines or change html paragraphs into divisions).

After Preview, click "Compose" again to return to editing. Learned the hard way. If you click Back button on browser, you lose everything you typed.

No, you don't. Just click forward again. (At least on Mac/Safari; I don't know what happens on PC.)
Added: Just tried it again on purpose. No problem.

Doesn't work on Firefox on PC. I just tried it again, and it took me back to a blank response form.
Rosie Perera:Doesn't work on Firefox on PC.
You're right. Doesn't work on Firefox on Mac either. Good thing I'm on Safari
