Logos 4 (Win XP / VMware Fusion)

I currently have Logos 3 running on Win XP (SP3) via VMware Fusion 3 on my MBP (SL 10.6.1). All of my resources are in a shared folder on the "Mac side" of my computer. With regards to Logos 4's indexing and overall performance, does it matter where my resources are located (shared folder or Windows folder)?
Thanks!!!

Otto,
Logos 4 will automatically copy resources into its folder, resource location cannot be changed. It will then index the resources and also store the index within its folder structure so it will take a bit of disk space on the Windows side.
Hopefully Logos 4 for Mac will come along fast enough that virtual machines can be ditched soonish.

Thanks Chris!!! I may need to get a larger hard drive!!!
How does L4 perform in a virtual machine - much better than L3???

Actually, L4 performs worse than L3 in a VM. If you do get things up and running there are some settings that need to be changed to speed things up. See http://www.seektheholy.com/2009/11/02/introducing-logos-4/#mac for a little more on this.
With VMWare Fusion 3 things might be snappier, I have not yet tested it enough to say for sure but in VMWare Fusion 2 some settings will need to be changed.

Thanks again Chris. I am running Fusion 3, and it is faster than Fusion 2 for the most part. I hope this helps when I do install this weekend. I'd be interested to hear the results of your testing with Fusion 3. And Logos 4 for Macs would be awesome, especially if it's on par with the Windows versions regarding features!!!
(I'm in NY tonight working on ESPN's coverage of the World Series. Prior to learning about Logos 4, I was hoping for a 7 game series. Now I want the Yankees to wrap it up tonight so I can get home and start working with Logos 4!!!)

I have discovered that Win XP performs much better in Fusion 3 if you install it as a new VM. Something must change in the reinstall process, but it is much snappier than just upgrading to Fusion 3.

I'm using fusion also on my MacBook pro, dual core, 4 gb ram.
On the fusion website it says don't tell fusion you have 2 core, unless you have 3, or 4 cores.
Also I gave fusion 2 gb of ram to use.
Any other settings (other then the one above about disabling 3-d) that you can think of?

Be sure to give the virtual hard drive plenty of room. L4 failed indexing due to insufficient HD space.

Hmmm..do you actually get it hard drive space? I thought Fusion expanded as needed...

Rick,
When you set up the virtual machine you have to specify the size of the virtual hard drive. It will report that size to Windows but it will only allocate what you actually use. Tell it you want a 50 gig hard drive but only use 25 gig and it will only take up 25 gig. Use 50 gig, however, and it has hit its limit and won't get bigger.
If you make a separate partition for the virtual machine, which gives better performance, then it will take up the specified amount of space from the start with, again, no expansion when things fill up.

I finished installing Logos 4 on my Win XP virtual machine (Fusion 3) and made the recommended changes - I'm pleasantly surprised that Logos 4 runs significantly better than Logos 3 on my MBP. I've only just barely scratch the surface at exercising Logos 4 (only done speed searches of entire library and used exegetical guide); however, I can certainly live with the performance I have now on my virtual machine until I install a Windows 7 bootcamp partition and/or the Mac version is ready.

Same here - it runs quite nicely under Fusion 2 for me. I'm quite content to continue using it this way until the Mac version catches up over the next few months...

Hi Otto and JH.
Please consider helping us Beta test. The more folks who contribute and find bugs, the faster this will progress
PLUS, the cool news is that ALL your settings, notes and work in the Windows updates to the Mac--right now the Alpha syns every setting I have been able to confirm.

Thanks Joe - I'm planning to. I also downloaded the Mac version when I upgraded - just need to install it and get going...

Joe, I'm also running both. I'll be following closely the Mac Beta forums as things progress (and adding to them too).

Would you mind sharing your settings? It is sluggish for me in Fusion 2, but snappy in Parallels 5 trial. I haven't tried the Fusion 3 trial, because I don't know if I can go back to 2 after that and am not ready to upgrade. If I could get it running comfortably on Fusion 2 until the Mac version is up to speed, I will be content.

Michael, how do you install Fusion 3 as a new VM? I'm currently using Fusion 2 and would like to upgrade, if it will help with the Logos 4 performance. Thanks!

I'm not Michale, but here's the steps on how to do it and a few settings to experiment with:
1.Upgrade Fusion to version 3 (just install it)
2. Then after you have started Fusion go File-->New then create a new virtual machine by inserting your XP disk.
3. After you have the machine built, go into Fusion's settings for that virtual machine and allocate 2GB of Ram (if you can spare it) and turn off graphics acceleration
4. On your XP desktop, right click and click Properties-->Settings-->Advance -->Troubleshoot and turn the Hardware acceleration to just one step above off.
5. After you have installed Logos V4, once it is running you can run tasgmgr.exe and right click the Logos4.exe process under the "Process" tab and set the priority as "high"
All these things seem to make for a fairly snappy machine for me and has been quite useable.

While this seems to accelerate things a bit, I now have a ghost following my cursor. Or perhaps, I just too fast for XP. Have you noticed this?

No ghost here... You are just too fast! (I bet your Mac Pro is way better than mine anyhow!) ;-)

Maybe. I have 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Mac Pro that is 3-1/2 years old.

OK, my MBP is newer, but I think your Mac Pro is more experienced!

Rick, how do you "give" Fusion 2 GB of RAM? Also, how much RAM does your computer have?
Thanks!

How do you install Fusion 3 as a new VM? Also, did you have to reinstall all of the software that was on your previous VM?
Thanks!

Christina, the link in my signature below this post has a small blog on how to allocate ram to your virtual machine. Give it a look and if you need any help, just post a message on here as there are several of us that use Fusion to run L4 Windows.

Unfortunately, this means that after you upgrade to version 3, you need to set up a new virtual machine by installing XP again. Your existing machine won't be harmed and you can run it any time you want. It just means you will have two virtual machines which you can choose at start up on which to run. It also unfortunately means that once you install XP again, you will also have to install your software again on this new machine. Again, your old machine and it's software will run fine, but the new machine has to be set up from scratch.

I always find that if at all possible, do a fresh install. Can someone clarify that if you setup a new virtual machine after installing VM3 where you have already been working in Logos 4 where you have added notes and such, how do you get those notes and everything over to the new virtual machine (the idea being you don't lose what you have already created in Logos 4)?
Thanks for any replies

Welcome to the forums!
I haven't done this yet, but the notes should be downloaded automatically as they are saved on Logos servers. L4 uses "cloud" type technology. The only thing I have seen a complaint over is that user defined collections were not transferred and that was raised as a bug today in a separate thread. To make doubly sure on this, if I were in your shoes I would build the new virtual machine and get it running to insure everything transferred before deleting the old virtual machine. If you have enough hard drive space to do this, there's no real downside to doing this.

The custom collections I created in the Parallels VM are available on the Mac A-8 Passage Guide. So, it seems that they are transferred, at least on my system.
Maybe, Bob likes me after all, even if I did not get 4.0a auto-magically. [:D]

I read later in the bug report that the collections were indeed transferred over, it just took a bit of time.

This was about the time that I had just finished reading the whole forum, was hoovering at 665 and really didn't have a reason to post again. Yet, without making too lame of a post, I made it to 666 and went off to do some things other than read the forum! Besides, I don't want to overtake you. You are my mentor on here!!!

I installed L4 in a VMWare 2.0.6/XP Pro environment last night, looked great. This morning L4 would not open, XP tells me L4 encountered a problem and had to shut down. Restarted VMWare, same result. Reinstalled L4 same result. Upgraded to VMWare 3.0.1 AND reinstalled L4, same result... What is the definition of insanity? Any ideas?

Welcome to the forums Tim!
Make sure you reboot your computer in between restarting VMware. I have known VMware to like being run on a freshly rebooted machine before when dealing with problems.
The only thing that I can think of is that when you do a reinstall, you need to make sure that all traces of L4 are removed. (I'm taking a shot in the dark here). I would be suspicious that even when I use the control panel function to deinstall Logos 4, that it is leaving some of the user configuration files on the computer. So I would go searching for those to make sure. Here's an article on Logos 3 which can give you some idea of what I am talking about: http://www.logos.com/support/article/533 You might have to call CS to get Logos 4 specific instructions.
That said, if you upgraded to Fusion 3.0, you only really get the speed benefits of this version by setting up a new machine with Fusion 3.0. Even though Fusion 3.0 can read and run machines created with earlier versions, it is version 3.0 with version 3.0 created machines that gets the best performance. If I were in your shoes, I would probably just create a new machine and try re-installing Logos 4 on that new machine. (rather than fight the old one). I am using Logos 4 on Fusion 3.0 and it works really well. Once you get it running, go to the wiki to see some suggested settings for Fusion to make Logos 4 run as fast as possible. http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_4_Mac

I have been using L4 in XP with Fusion2.0 for nearly a month. Speed is not fast but I slowly get used to it. I hesitate in spending time installing Fusion 3.0 all over again, coz I hope that the L4 for Mac beta maybe coming in a few months. So, I wait.[;)].

The ideal is to wait if you can or are willing. They've come some way in 8 weeks. I have no clue what sort of projection this would put them on for beta 1, but a sort of personal guesstimate is April/May next year. (this is my guess not Logos')

With my L3 install in Fusion & L1 on Mac, I am also sharing the resource folder. I have a MacBook Pro, and little hard drive space to spare.
Is there NO way for L4 to share the same resource folder any more? Is it possible that a custom resource folder is a "feature" that will eventually be implemented in the final version?

As Joe said, there is no way to do this now. Once L4 Mac is up to speed, there will not need. Therefore, I don't think Logos will use valuable resources to implement this feature. Rereading what I just typed, I hope I don't sound blunt or rude (my wife tells me I sometimes sound abrupt on the phone).
