Logos 4 on Windows 8 Developer Pre-Beta?

I Just put Windows 8 on my Acer Windows-based tablet PC. I've been running Logos on WIndows 7 on this tablet and it absolutely stinks. Logos needs to incorporate touch based scrolling rather than be dependent on the non-sizeable scrollbars that it currently has. One should be able to swipe upwards, downwards, or sideways and have the Logos screen move with the swipes. Has anyone at Logos looked at the SDK with an eye towards making the viewer touch-screen friendly? It shouldn't be too difficult for your engineers to incorporate touch even on Windows 7. See the MSDN pages for "designing for accessibility"! If you need some assistance in making this product usable, I wll be glad to help in my spare time.

Were you able to install L4 on Win8? If so, any thoughts WRT is is more responsive than on Win7?

WRT L4 HMI, GUI, and Touch...I completely understand. Using L4 from a Win tablet is harder than it should be--even once "pen flicks"/etc workarounds have been made. I use a pen most of the time on my tablet with L4, and even that is an experience more to be tolerated than emulated. WRT tablets/slates/Win and asking Logos to make this a coding priority, please take a look at this thread and then cast your votes on UserVoice.

Yes, Logos 4 (latest version) installs just fine on the Acer W500 (32 bit) tablet running Windows 8 Developer Pre-Beta. The indexing works fine and all of the features are working fine. As I said though, with just a little bit of development work, it could be made very touch-friendly, even on Windows 7 (the accessibility API's which are what makes an application "touch friendly" which are available using API's from .NET 3.5 and Win32 are very easy to plaster over existing forms or dialog boxes etc).

Bradley and at least a few other programmers are at a Win 8 Developers conference right now. I think that means they are trying to be as far in front of the "problem" as they can be.

Over the weekend, I'm trying out L4Win on a Samsung Series 7 Tablet (i5) running Win 8 Dev.

L4 runs on Win 8 [Intel] like it does on a Win 7 Tablet.

I have a large library (20GB of downloadable content), and it took nearly 24 hours to download it over WiFi--perhaps the WiFi driver isn't optimized yet. I'm still indexing, but the device has run out of battery life several times over the last day and had to be rebooted.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, without a touch-friendly HMI/GUI (or better yet, Metro-ization) one must have a lot of patience with L4Win on Win 8...especially w/no physical keyboard and the delays encountered by indexing running.

I am hopeful that the Consumer Beta release of Win 8 late in Feb will hold some surprises.

The problem with Logos for Windows is not inherent in the O/S (Windows 8 won't run Logos any differently than Windows 7 or Windows XP). The problem is that the program Logos 4 for Windows itself is not usable on touchscreens. They simply need to set the "WMT_INERTIAL_SCROLLING" flag (which scrolls when you move your finger), recompile the code, and the product would then work on touchscreens. This would be about a 10 minute effort for an engineer who knows Win32 or .Net or whatever they used to write this product.

Unfortunately.....

The people who run this company are too busy plying us with sleazy used-car-salesman advertising and "deals" to devote any time to engineering the product (Christians indeed -- Logos is run by hell-bound hypocrites that charge interest to other Christians without calling it "interest"). As a former Microsoft engineer, I could fix Logos's problem with touchscreens by a one-line change to the source code. Too bad the simplicity of the fix eludes the incompentent coders who wrote this poorly-conceived product.

Read this before you accuse the leaders of Logos of not being real Christians. They repeatedly show Christian charity to customers and others in their local community. Yes, they have a marketing department (completely different people than the engineers, by the way), and you might find their sales tactics (or any sales tactics for that matter) distasteful and incompatible with Christian faith. But it's no more Christian to respond with the heated language you did than the practice of using marketing strategies to sell products is. They are a company who have to survive financially in order to keep in business, and selling products is a prerequisite for that. Critique the product with real and specific complaints about it; fair enough. And it's great to offer suggestions about how they could fix problems (which you did in your very helpful first paragraph). But ad hominem attacks don't belong on these forums which are hosted by Logos at their pleasure (as a sign of their Christian charity, though, they probably won't delete your unkind post; they tend to turn the other cheek).

I really am beginning to wonder why some expect current commercial software to somehow jump through all the new hoops of a new operating system that's still beta in its first week of preview. At least where I come from, no self-respecting IT pro would recommend a Windows OS that's not yet out in SR-1 even if they were happy playing around with it on their own computer.

I'm still thinking Windows 8 is Vista channeling Dorian Gray. I might very well take the opportunity to get a closeout deal on a nice Win 7 machine if I don't see something truly significant on Win 8.

My goodness Fred ... you're brave. The most we've gotten so far over 2 years is that L-company is not a 'ministry' (whatever that is).

But I agree on the touchscreen issue (probably far in the minority user-wise). On a trip Sunday I was using L4 in church in touchscreen mode and it just couldn't keep up with the teacher (or me).

When I got home from the trip, I spent a few minutes re-programming my own Bible software to better handle touch, so at least I'll have one that is usable.

Personally Thankful for Logos payment plan option that has a monthly processing fee, but lacks an interest charge based on outstanding balance. Likewise Thankful for option to pay off outstanding balance to avoid future monthly fees. For the Christmas 2011 sale with credit for purchase, have received much more credit than monthly processing fee. For current cash flow situation, Thankful for payment plan option while have full use of digital resources.

By the way, many credit card companies charge both usary (interest charged on a balance) plus a variety of fees, including merchant processing fees. Every payment processed by Logos using a customer credit card has a merchant processing fee, which is not shown on bills to consumers. Suspect Logos receives from 94% to 98 % of amount processed by credit card for payment.
