I have the scholar gold package and many other resources that I have bought over time (Mcarthur NT commentaries, Hendricksen's Baker NT Commentaries, Berkhof colletion, B B Warfield Collection, Pillar NT Commentaries, Bavinck Reformed Dogmatics, James M. Boice Commentaries, RV60, LBLA, Nicolls'a Expositor's greek testament, Alford's Greek testament, Muler's Post-Reformation Reformed Dogmatics, John Owen's commentary on Hebrews, along many others

I am planning of buying an iPad 2 64GB....So I have few questions before make the move:

1. Is my Gold package going to work along with my other resources listed above similar as in my laptop/PC?

2. What functions have limitations? i.e.Indexing, Search (Basic, Bible, Morphology), Exegetical guide, text comparison, etc

3. Are there any issues with speed, performance that I should be aware of?

4. How many GB may use the Gold Package + the resoruces listed above? (estimated of course)

5. Any other advice is more than welcome

Thanks!!

Eddie Florentino:

2. What functions have limitations? i.e.Indexing, Search (Basic, Bible, Morphology), Exegetical guide, text comparison, etc

Suggest reading iPhone/iPad => FAQ

Mobile app has significantly less functionality than Logos 4.  Several features (e.g. Passage Guide, Bible Word Study) need network connection since results displayed on iPad, but search done on Logos servers.

Bit more expensive option is a new MacBook AIr that can run Logos 4 Mac (or Logos 4 Windows, see wiki => Logos 4 Mac ).  Recommend purchasing model with 4 GB RAM (since surface mounted to motherboard, cannot be upgraded by consumer).

Logos Support => http://www.logos.com/support/techfaq includes:

Q: What are the actual download sizes for fresh installs of Logos 4 base packages?

A: Logos 4 base packages can be downloaded immediately after purchase. Here are the download sizes for each of our collections:

Due to publisher restrictions, some Logos resources are not available for mobile use.  Can login to http://biblia.com for an idea of mobile resource availability.

If download all resources to iPad (one at a time), anticipate 6 to 8 GB of space usage.  Option: download subset of Library resources for offline (airplane) use.

Apple offers refurbished iPad's => http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad (same warranty as new)

Eddie -

Here are some of my thoughts for you:

  1. The first thing you need to know is that the mobile app is NOT Logos 4. It is a good app, which will hopefully get some much needed improvement (i.e. notes & highlighting) in the near future. So the answer is "No, it will not work similarly to your laptop/PC."
  2. I use the mobile app primarily for reading and am unlikely to use the features you listed :"Search (Basic, Bible, Morphology), Exegetical guide, text comparison, etc". I will point out that no indexing is needed. The search capabilities are not as powerful as L4.
  3. You should be aware that the mobile app is designed to be run from the "cloud." Your experience will be be controlled by your internet speed. I think you will find that your primary study will be done on your computer, not your iPad.
  4. I have no idea how large the Gold package is, but it is irrelevant. The mobile app runs from the "cloud" and resources are called upon as needed over the internet. See your Biblia.com account to see which resources are available.
  5. I have a first gen 64 GB iPad and love it. I would love an iPad 2 (or 3!) more. I do want to let you know that you do NOT need the 64GB model for Logos (but it is still very nice to have).

I have a first gen iPad with wifi.  IMHO the current Logos 4 app cannot be described as a good app.  Other free apps run circles around it in terms of basic search functionality.

When i am in church (i.e. not on wifi), the app is basically just a glorified reader, so I use Olive Tree or YouVersion instead (which are much better than the current Logos app for basic searching).

So if you are buying an iPad 2 primarily to use Logos, you may be better off waiting until the app actually has some functionality.

Taxee -

Can't a "glorified reader" be a good app? What makes it a good app to me is the ability to view my resources. Don't get me wrong... I hear what you are saying about those other apps!... but they don't have my Logos library on them.

Thank you Alabama24!!

The facts that you have shared have been very useful. Seems like I have to think through this more carefully since most of the features that are important to me "run" on the cloud. That implies that in order to use them I need to have either WiFi or wireless 3G connectivity at all times

Thanks again and regards!!

Thank you for the detailed answers!!

As I said before I thought that the Mobile app for the iPad was more mature and closer to the Mac version. So I have to re-think the whole thing

I am not a fan of Mac so the Mac Book is not an option for me (in my opinion is too expensive). I have a Lenovo Thinkpad with 500GB HD, 8GB Ram, 15.6" Screen with Intel cetrino quad core, etc, etc. It is fast and reliable. Logos 4 runs smoothly...helping me a lot in my study and sermon preparation

Thanks again and regards!!
