The Zohar : Jewish Mysticism

Hi

I need this to be able to look up quotations etc that seem to confirm Christian doctrine relating to the identity & purpose of the Messiah as well as the nature of the (tri)unity of God. I need an English version, but to be able to enable "original language view", like the Bibles can do would be handy.

Would it be complete next week? ;-)

Thanks.

Don't you think it is just a tad late for that?

Searching my Logos library for zohar NEAR mysticism found several results:

By the way, an internet search for "Zohar Jewish Mysticism" found some books by Daniel Matt, Robert Hamilton, and J. H. Laenen; wondering which book(s) are being suggested ?

Searching Logos for Zohar found one article => http://www.logos.com/nationalbibleweek/biblestudy/76

Searching Logos for Jewish Mysticism finds many resources => http://www.logos.com/products/search?q=jewish+mysticism&start=0&sort=rel&pageSize=30

Last I knew, Gershom Scholem was still the "go to" guy - although I would certainly recommend one read his Jewish Mysticism to orient yourself before tackling him on the Zohar or translations of the Zohar. For a cheat sheet consider: The Messianic Idea in Judaism: And Other Essays on Jewish Spirituality
by Gershom Gerhard Scholem and hope your prof doesn't read the Logos forums[;)] You'll have to do your own research to find the Hebrew text - You will find what to look for in Scholem's works.

In Logos you will find almost nothing about the esoteric or mystical traditions except a bit of gnosticism.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Let's see - say 15 hours for PaRDeS (assuming he's either Orthodox or Catholic), 20 hours for Adam Kadom, 15 hours for broken vessels ... yup, it's a tad late ... at least 2-3 years late if he's to do the topic justice.[:D] (I had a writing instructor who was a Kabbalahist - a somewhat crazy student decided he was John the Baptist come to announce the second coming of the Messiah - the instructor.)

Which came first:  The course or the mental state?

The whole area of Hekalot and Kabbala mysticism is one I couldn't wait on Logos for - I just bought Tree of Souls on Kindle, and recently purchased Schaeffer's book on Mysticism.

...late for what? This is not for a class project or something ... in case that's what you meant.

...was just hoping it could get some interest & get started. There's some good apologetics content in the Zohar - even though I'm mainly interested in only those bits & pieces - to be able to quote it from a source that I have. ....maybe it would be online somewhere? ...it's very popular these days after all...?

Too late in composition to function as any sort of witness regarding the Christian view of "Christian doctrine relating to the identity & purpose of the Messiah."  Perhaps it could speak regarding views in the 14th century, but not regarding NT Christian views.

The Zohar is not a book that can be understood in bits and pieces - You really need to ground yourself in Jewish Scripture interpretation first and then spend months in Jewish mysticism before the Zohar text itself becomes meaningful. There are always a few Jewish mysticism Lite (or Christian mysticism Lite or Buddhism Lite) teachers who charge you money in exchange for giving you a "feel good" philosophy. (or for some "feel superior"). They even provide the media with great sound-bites. If these are the ones you wish to develop apologetics for, you need to read the particular teacher's writings or commentaries. The Zohar itself will not help you.

If you truly wish to develop an apologetic for the students of the Zohar, you'll need a firm grounding in Christian mysticism. Otherwise you will get an indulgent chuckle as they witness to you the importance of the "esoteric" tradition regarding a personal relationship with God.

http://www.kabbalah.info/engkab/the-zohar/download-the-zohar has both text and translation. I do not vouch for the quality.

For those of you who haven't yet found out, there is now a Jewish suggestion at Logos' new Uservoice site for prepubs: Add more Jewish works. Please go add your votes. And then add the remainder of your votes to other suggestions -- preferably mine.Big Smile

(There is also a new Uservoice site for CP's, with another ten new votes for you to spend: http://communitypricing.uservoice.com/forums/183260-general/filters/top. That too has a Jewish suggestion: Add more Jewish works to CP.)
