Base Package Comparison - in Excel!

Hi everybody,

First post here. I'm a prospective Seminary student and occasional teacher/worship leader who currently owns the Bible Study Library, and am looking to upgrade, so I've been comparing the Original Languages and Scholar's libraries. The comparison page on Logos is nice, but as a professional nerd I felt the compulsive need to filter, sort, and otherwise slice and dice the data, so I did a little hacking with the HTML source and came up with an Excel version of the comparison sheet. No use keeping it all to myself, so I figured I'd post it on here.

Great wok Mitchell! Being a compulsive nerd-ess, I added a column inserting the resource name where my target-level minus my current level > 0 (thanks to your using numbers!!). Sure would be nice if some of your compulsive nerd-ity rubbed off on the Logos.com comparison page!

@Keep Smiling, I completely agree, especially on the count of linking the resource to the product page. If I find a few spare minutes I'll add the Catholic packages to the comparison spreadsheet. Now that I've got the site's layout reverse engineered it won't take long.

I bet someone with more data mining prowess than me could add product page links to my spreadsheet, and maybe even put in the price of the item if bought individually. Any takers?

Note: the Catholic "Bible Translations" list compares with two sections of original comparison page: English Bibles and Ancient Texts in Translation

I updated the catholic tab with the Catholic Libray Builder http://www.logos.com/product/10056/catholic-library-builder , which is no base package but a large resource bundle which I happen to own (drawing on the work M.J. Smith did here http://community.logos.com/forums/t/38933.aspx ) and the Minimal Crossgrade http://www.logos.com/minimalcrossgrade (which is a base package, albeit a very small one, which I happen to own). But then again, everything should be in one place. I thus integrated the "catholic" tab into the standard tab - mainly by manually comparing, copying the data into the Standard sheet.

To enhance usefulness of this in buying decisions, I included two other columns: "additional licence" and "I own" - the latter just sums up the entries from Minimal Crossgrade, Cathoilic Library Builder and "additional licence"- if this is greater 0, I have the resource (obviously everybody needs to fill in this column manually for themselves, and I didn't care to complete this so far).

Thus, the resulting sheet may be useful for deciding over next steps (I found that buying OL may be comparable to upgrading to Catholic Scholars for me). Everyone should be aware that I may have made mistakes and that this sheet may not give correct information as to the resources one obtains by buying/upgrading.

Triggered by this thread http://community.logos.com/forums/t/42613.aspx I added some more functionality to the sheet: There are three additional colums to facilitate comparison between two packages, right now Christian Home (CH) and the Minimal Crossgrade MC. The sheet right now in column "R" filters all things that are contained either in MC or in CH. Then there are two columns where you can easily see the resources/functionality contained in one but not the other.

Just a quick update: Working further with the spreadsheet allowed me to determine that Catholic Scholars is more helpful for my current library situation than Original Languages and even gives me a lot of resources I wouldn't get from 'classic' Scholars (which would give me a number of resources on Ministry, Preaching etc. that I currently don't need), so it helped me to decide where to spend my money.

There is at least one known error on the sheet above: the KJV Cambridge Paragraph bible and the AEV1874 are the same bible, which affects the comparison of interlinears four lines are listed, should be only two. Maybe I'll post an updated version of the sheet, if it is helpful.

I also wondered whether the authorless "Harmony of the Gospels" was a duplicate of e.g. Robertson, but now while Catholic Scholars is happily indexing, I know that this is an update to Robertson by Steven Cox and Kendell Easley: http://www.logos.com/product/7295/harmony-of-the-gospels

Funny enough about two weeks ago I asked my sales rep if there was an easier way to compare the gold to the platinum. He suggested printing it and using a ruler... From a company that sells digital books! Not my favorite interaction with my sales person.

I have not yet called customer service But the difference in price between Builder and C Scholar is $400 the extra books (not counting the RI – reverse interlinear) is $500. If allowed to trade up need to know are these books worth $400? [Like getting one free]

Well, obviously this is in the eye of the buyer. I'm an evangelical (I still wonder why Catholic Scholars brought me away from my stance on a hand-picked library...) and am not familiar with these. Maybe some real catholics can chime in as well - my take:

The missing books are from four groups: a commentary, two source-texts on Apostolic Fathers, a (future) resource on liturgies and four books on early christian history.

An Exposition of the Acts of the Apostles, by John MacEvilly $90
(shrug) a commentary. From 1899. Says from itself its rather devotional. All the other of MacEvilly's commentaries are in CLB - I personally wouldn't pay 90 for it. The text is PD, so maybe one could download it somewhere and make a PB
Apostolic Fathers in Greek and English (Holmes Edition) $43
this will be much like Lake and Lightfoot that you already have
Lake's Apostolic Fathers English Reverse Interlinear (Brannan) ($50, as per my lookup)
this is like the other AF resources, but much better, since it's a real interlinear, and while the other AF resources give Greek manuscript, morphology and lemma, this gives English directly beneath the word, Louw-Nida numbers and allows for sympathetic highlighting (wonder against which resource...). I believe it may be worth its price if you are into studying NT Greek, ECF etc. Still you could buy it separately
Liturgies Eastern and Western Collection (2 vols.), by C. E. Hammond and F. E. Brightman* $45
it seems this is also a PD resource, there are a number of reprints on Amazon. Right now you buy only a future licence in Logos. It seems to be interesting especially for people who are deep into ecclesiastical traditions or like to find out about Eastern Orthodoxy

It seems to be a collection of essays from a rather modern perspective. If you are studying first-century history, it's maybe helpful (I wouldn't buy it at $90)
Primitive Christianity: A Survey of Recent Studies and Some New Proposals $60
discussing Lüdemann probably could go against the forum rules... however, some may like him. In this 200p-resource Lüdemann reviews works of others regarding first-century history. It's not available on amazon.com, has no customer reviews on amazon.de - maybe for fans and scholars
Symbols of Church and Kingdom: A Study of Early Syriac Tradition, by Robert Murray $120
this seems to be very helpful - if one is interested in the history of Syriac christianity up to AD 500 - the price-point shows this is aimed at libraries and those who do their master's or PhD-thesis on this niche-aspect. I'm glad I have it in CS, but wouldn't buy it for the price.
The Origins of Christendom in the West $90
These collected essays on the history of christendom (not: christianity - christendom is defined socio-culturally as "a civilization in which (a) Christianity is the dominant religion and in which (b) this dominance has been backed up by social or legal compulsions" ) seem to me at first glance to be the most valuable in this group. Still expensive.

Taken altogether, I personally wouln't invest several hundred dollars into this, but rather buy selectively the good ones (and perhaps additional ones) out of my area of interest. If you like to see some ToCs or other screenshots, I can provide.

Furthermore, I was very surprised to find An Exposition of the Acts of the Apostles on your list. That book wasn't on the lists of either CLB or CSL when I went through them line by line. I wonder if it really was by intention that it was added to one but not the other? Seems odd to have 5 vols in one and 6 in the other. To me it looks more like they missed one line/one vol when they made the original lists, and then when they added it in later they forgot to do it everywhere. I'll send Andrew an e-mail and ask.

Lastly, like I said on MJ's site, call a good sales rep. You shouldn't have to pay the full CLB > CSL upgrade price when you've also got Platinum. You should pay much less.
