Glitch: Incorrect Linking in Church History Guide

I was looking through the Church History Guide and I discovered numerous links that were either linked incorrectly, or to books that Logos.com does not sell anymore. All of the following link errors can be found in the Church History Guide (http://www.logos.com/churchhistory).

The first book of the Guide is “Introduction to the History of Christianity: First Century to the Present Day”. The link that is available in the guide for the book (http://www.logos.com/product/2624/introduction-to-the-history-of-christianity-first-century-to-the-present-day) takes you to a page that says “That is not a product we currently sell.” I did a search for the book and it IS a book that is currently being sold, and here is the link (http://www.logos.com/product/5099/introduction-to-the-history-of-christianity-first-century-to-the-present-day)! So please fix the link in the Church History Product Guide (http://www.logos.com/churchhistory). Thanks

The second link of the Guide is for “History of the Christian Church (Schaff, 8 vols.)”. The problem with this link is that it takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product” (http://www.logos.com/ebooks/details/schaff). Well the book exists, and here is the link: http://www.logos.com/product/575/history-of-the-christian-church. Please fix this linking error, too, please.

The third link of the Church History Product Guide is ALSO linked incorrectly (“Church History in Plain Language"). When you click on the link, it takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product” (this is the incorrect link: http://www.logos.com/ebooks/details/CHPLLANG). The book exists and can be found here: http://www.logos.com/product/2248/church-history-in-plain-language. Please fix this link as well.

The fifth link of the Product Guide is for "Nelson's Ultimate Bible Reference Library” which does not exist anymore. There IS, however, a bundle called “Nelson Bible Reference Bundle (200 vols.) [WBC, Preacher’s, and More!]” (http://www.logos.com/product/9653/nelson-bible-reference-bundle) and “Nelson 501 Book Unlock (501 vols.)” (http://www.logos.com/product/5905/nelson-501-book-unlock) that Logos could link to instead. Unless, of course, they don’t have the same as the “Nelson’s Ultimate Bible Reference Library”. This is just a suggestion of course.

Link six (“Studies in Early Church History”) is also linked wrong. When you click on the link (Studies in Early Church History) it takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” If I found the correct book, it should be linked here: http://www.logos.com/product/1165/studies-in-early-church-history. This product, however, appears to be in every Base Packages, so I am not sure why it needs to be mentioned in the product guide. (just a thought of course).

Link eight, “Exploring Church History (Eckman)”, is also linked wrong. It also takes you to a page (Exploring Church History) that says “We couldn’t find that product". The product exists and should be linked here: http://www.logos.com/product/2752/exploring-church-history. This product also appears to be in most (if not all) of the Base Packages.

Link nine, “Exploring Church History (Vos)”, is also linked wrong. It also takes you to a page (Exploring Church History) that says “We couldn’t find that product.” The product exists and should be linked here: http://www.logos.com/product/1190/exploring-church-history.

Link ten, “On This Day,” is also linked incorrectly. The link takes you to a page (On This Day) that says, “We couldn’t find that product.” The product exists at this link: http://www.logos.com/product/2273/on-this-day. I recommend fixing this as well.

Link twelve is also linked wrong. The available link takes you to a page (The Encyclopedia of Christianity: Volumes 1-3) that says, “That is not a product we currently sell.” Well it is a product sold, but it is not available in 3 volumes. Volumes 4 and 5 have been added to the work and it is being sold at this link: http://www.logos.com/product/8809/the-encyclopedia-of-christianity-vols-1-5. Please fix this link. I would like to recommend to Logos to add volume five to the Base Packages (Gold and above) that have volumes 1-4 in it already. The fifth volume would be a welcome addition to the Base Packages (Gold and above).

Link fourteen, “Who’s Who in Christian History”, is not available independent of the Base Packages, since it is in every single Base Package. Either a) a page should be made showing that it is available in all of them, or b) the link should be removed from the Product Guide.

Link fifteen, “Dictionary of Women in Church History,” is also linked wrong. The link (Dictionary of Women in Church History) takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” The product exists and can be found here: http://www.logos.com/product/1490/dictionary-of-women-in-church-history. Please fix the link in the Guide. Thanks.

Link eighteen, "Biographical Entries from the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology,” is also linked wrong. The link (Biographical Entries from the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology) takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” The product exists, but is named differently as well. It is called “Evangelical Dictionary of Theology (Biographical Entries)” and is linked here: http://www.logos.com/product/1491/evangelical-dictionary-of-theology. My suggestion is not only fix the link, but change the name of the link to match the name of the book.

Link nineteen, “Biographical Entries from New 20th-Century Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge”, cannot be found whatsoever. I recommend removing this product from the Product Guide since it is no longer sold by Logos...from what I can see that is.

Link twenty, “Handbook on Evangelical Theologians,” is also linked incorrectly. The link (Handbook of Evangelical Theologians) also takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find this product.” The product exists and can be found at this link: http://www.logos.com/product/1492/handbook-of-evangelical-theologians. Please fix this link.

Link twenty-one, “Dictionary of Christianity in America,” is also linked incorrectly. The link (Dictionary of Christianity in America) also takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find this product.” The product exists and can be found here: http://www.logos.com/product/735/dictionary-of-christianity-in-america. Please fix this link.

Link twenty-six, “Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture (ACCS) (29 vols.)”, is no longer available through Logos. It is available elsewhere, from the Publisher for Libronix, but only for PC (as seen on their page here: http://www.ivpress.com/cgi-ivpress/book.pl/code=2480). My suggestion is that Logos take down the link for the product from the Church History Guide until it becomes available again through Logos as a download for Mac or PC.

Link twenty-seven, “Patristic Study (Swete)”, I also linked wrong. The link (Patristic Study) takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” The product is available but at this link: http://www.logos.com/product/2516/patristic-study. Please fix this link.

Link twenty-eight, “The Syriac Church and Church Fathers,” isn’t linked wrong, but should be modified since it is no longer a pre-pub. So I suggest that the link be changed from http://www.logos.com/products/prepub/details/3185 to http://www.logos.com/product/3186/gorgias-press-syriac-collection. Also, removed the description "gathering interest on our pre-publication program” since it is out of pre-pub.

Link thirty, “Church Origins Collection,” is not linked wrong, but ought to be modified since it is out of pre-pub. The new link for it is: http://www.logos.com/product/3869/church-origins-collection. I also recommend removing the description “under development” since it is out of development and available.

Link thirty-one, “The Apostles Creed: Its Relation to Primitive Christianity”, is linked wrong. The link () takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” The product exists and can be found at this link: http://www.logos.com/product/2430/the-apostles-creed-its-relation-to-primitive-christianity. Please fix. Also, when you get to the page for “The Apostles Creed: Is Relation to Primitive Christianity” the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (1915 edition) is linked in the description. The link to the ISBE is incorrect. It should be this: http://www.logos.com/product/903/international-standard-bible-encyclopedia-1915-edition. Please fix this, too.

Link thirty-two, “Historic Creeds and Confessions”, is linked wrong. The link (Historic Creeds and Confessions) takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” The product can be found at this link: http://www.logos.com/product/743/historic-creeds-and-confessions. Please fix.

Link thirty-seven, “A Reformation Reader: Primary Texts with Introductions”, is linked incorrectly. Please fix this link.

Link thirty-nine, “Luther’s Works (55 vols.)”, is linked incorrectly. The link (Luther’s Works) takes you to a page that says, “That is not a product we currently sell.” Well, it IS sold by Logos and it can be found here: http://www.logos.com/product/15485/luthers-works. Please fix this.

Link forty, “Martin Luther’s Basic Theological Writings”, is linked incorrectly. Please fix.

Link forty-one, “The Book of Concord,” is linked wrong. The link (The Book of Concord) takes you to a page that says “That is not a product we currently sell.” Well, it is currently being sold by logos, and it can be found here: http://www.logos.com/product/8832/the-book-of-concord. Please fix.

Link forty-two, “Concordia Electronic Theological Library (38 vols.)”, is linked wrong. The link (Concordia Electronic Theological Library) takes you to a page that says “That is not a product we currently sell.” This product is no longer available for logos. Please remove this link.

Link forty-three, “Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion”, is linked wrong. The link (Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion) takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” This product can be found in two places (and I recommend that the Church History Guide have both linked): 1) http://www.logos.com/product/9472/institutes-of-the-christian-religion, and 2) http://www.logos.com/product/5153/the-institutes-of-the-christian-religion-english-latin-and-french. Please fix.

Link forty-four, “Calvin’s Commentaries and Spurgeon’s Sermons”, is linked wrong. The link (Calvin's Commentaries and Spurgeon's Sermons) takes you to a page that says “That is not a product we currently sell.” This is true because Calvin’s Commentaries are sold separately now. They can be found here: http://www.logos.com/product/5161/calvins-commentaries. Spurgeon’s Sermons are also sold separately here: http://www.logos.com/product/5838/the-complete-spurgeon-sermon-collection. I would recommend adding to the Church History Guide (under Calvin), the “Calvin 500 Collection (108 vols.) (http://www.logos.com/product/5170/calvin-500-collection). I would also like to suggest changing the name of the “History of the Reformation in the Time of Calvin” to the “History of the Reformation in Europe in the Time of Calvin” to help prevent confusion, since someone might wonder if they are two different things, even though they are linked together. Just something to think about.

Link fifty-five, “Wesleyan and Arminian Collection”, is linked wrong. The link (Wesleyan-Arminian Collection) takes you to a page that says “That is not a product that we currently sell.” This is correct, since I cannot find a Wesleyan-Arminian Collection of any kind. The only thing that came close was “Arminian Theological Studies Collection (5 vols.).” I suggest removing the link.

Link fifty-six, “John Wesley-Adam Clarke Collection”, is not linked correctly. The link (John Wesley - Adam Clark Collection) takes you to a page that says “That is not a product currently we currently sell.” This is correct since there is a separate John Wesley Collection here: http://www.logos.com/product/9130/john-wesley-collection (and it is a Pre-Pub at this point). Adam Clarke’s works can be found in his own separate collection here: http://www.logos.com/product/9164/the-works-of-adam-clarke (and it is a Pre-Pub at this point). Please fix. I would also recommend adding “The Works of George Whitefield” (http://www.logos.com/product/6687/the-works-of-george-whitefield) since he a contemporary of Wesley and Clarke.

Link fifty-eight, “American Religious Traditions: The Shaping of Religion in the United States”, is linked wrong. The link (American Religious Traditions: The Shaping of Religion in the United States) takes you to a page that says “This is not a product we currently sell.” The product is sold by Logos and can be found here: http://www.logos.com/product/5091/american-religious-traditions-the-shaping-of-religion-in-the-united-states. Please fix.

Link sixty, “The Canvas Cathedral”, is not linked correctly. The link (The Canvas Cathedral) takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” The product can be found at this link: http://www.logos.com/product/2412/the-canvas-cathedral. Please fix.

Link sixty-four, “History of Interpretation (Farrar)”, is not linked correctly. The link (History of Interpretation) takes you to a page that says “We couldn’t find that product.” The product can be found at this link: http://www.logos.com/product/2503/history-of-interpretation. Please fix.

The link for the Theological Journal Libraries: Volumes 1-10 is correct. But here I’d like to suggest adding links to Volume 11 (http://www.logos.com/product/8116/theological-journal-library-vol-11), Volume 12 (http://www.logos.com/product/8111/theological-journal-library-vol-12), and Volume 13 (http://www.logos.com/product/8119/theological-journal-library-vol-13), and eventually Volume 14 (which is a Pre-Pub at the moment).

Link sixty-six, “Christian Theology Set”, is not linked correctly. The link (Christian Theology Set) takes you to a page that says “That is not a product we currently sell.” This is sold by Logos and can be found here: http://www.logos.com/product/5608/christian-theology-set. Please fix.

I would also like to suggest adding the “Lion Histories Series (10 vols.)” (http://www.logos.com/product/3635/lion-histories-series) to the Church History Guide.

Fixing the above links would make using the guide much more user friendly. Plus adding some of those other products that do deal with Church History would make finding Church History products easier.

I actually would like to work for Logos. I would 1) look for links that need to be fixed and report them, and 2) I have ideas for expanding the Timelines and a couple of other things, and if I could do the work myself (instead of making suggestions) AND get paid doing it (since I am in desperate need of it, since my Logos addiction is making me broke) AND not have to move to Washington from Iowa, I'd be more than willing to help do those minor things, since Logos is very busy with other things, too. I'd also like to go around the country (and even the world) to Bible Colleges (Accredited and non-Accredited) to show the benefits of Logos to other bible students. The more I know about Logos, the more I have become the go-to guy about Logos from fellow students and a professor of mine. So, it would be a great opportunity represent Logos to fellow Bible students (such as myself) and to expand such things as their Timelines (which is VERY incomplete). But, I doubt they'd go for such ideas. I just would like to see Logos become even better than it already is (and yes, faster as well).

Yeah, I hope to see them put more work into their timelines too, at the very least bring them up to par with what Logos 3 could do, which was let users create their own timelines. I wonder whether you are up to something bigger than just this one website, since links to purportedly "nonexisting" resources abound lately, and they also come up from Reading Lists (where I'm sure MJ Smith double checked them before posting) and from resources.

It seems, many of the non-working links take the format www logos com ebooks details XXXXXXX or www logos com ebooks details NNNN, or www logos com product details NNNN (where XXXXXXX is a character abbreviation of the resource title and NNNN is a four-digit product number) while the working links take the format www logos com product NNNN zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (where NNNN is again the product number and zzzzzzzz is a longish non-abbreviated resource title). To me it seems they most likely renamed ebooks to products and then moved around some folder structures on the server and either forgot to update their links or used a tool/scripts/human beings for this task that just didn't finish their work.

Since changing all the page links and resource links may be too much, I wonder if it's possible to just recreate the missing pages with an auto-forward link to the correct one.

The only page among the Reading Lists that I can find (using Google) which includes "www.logos.com/ebooks/details" is Dead Sea Scrolls which is an old one created by someone internally at Logos, not MJ. And frankly, that shouldn't contain links to books to be purchased (nor prices! as those can change). Rather, they should contain the link to the book within Logos, assuming the user to have it already.

I don't think Caleb is up to fixing these links by setting up an auto-forward since he's not an employee of Logos. It's probably just a few pages on Logos.com where they forgot to change the link structure. They changed the website structure over a year ago. I'm surprised nobody stumbled upon the problems in guides before. (There appear to be broken links in several of the other old-style product guides, too.) It's probably simpler for Logos to just fix the broken links than set up some forwarding scheme. However there are a few places elsewhere on the Web (e.g., some old Forum posts, etc.) that still point to the old structure, so it's up to them whether they mind that all those links are broken.

The links from Logos to the webpages come only up in case you don't own the resource, that's why. I may post some screenshots when I'm back at my other PC.

I think this is because these guides (which are very valuable - I kept going back to the guide for Greek language resources several times) are not prominently enough linked.

Then again, some people may inclined to believe Logos when they say "this is a product we no longer sell" or "couldn't find this product". Others may doubt this based on experience and do their own search, either finding the resource or not. If not, it seems the link was correct. If they find the product, the search was successful and they go on with what they were up to in looking for the resource - people mostly write a new forum thread when they envision a problem that keeps them from going on, or when they are annoyed with something they feel should work and seems seriously broken, or when they think they can make a helpful contribution (such as here).

It totally sounded like you were asking him to consider doing that (if he should get a job at Logos, which he'd been daydreaming about in his second post). Anyway, the problem is even older than the reworking of the Logos website. This page that comes up is really not very helpful to users at all:

First, it doesn't tell you the name of the resource at all. It uses the internal resource ID, so you might not have any idea what resource Logos is telling you you might want to buy.

Second, when you click to visit Logos.com, it tries to look up the book by its resource ID, which has not for a very long time (since prior to Logos 4) been the way the Logos website identifies resources. It uses SKU numbers now. So you get a redirect URL like this: www.logos.com/cgi/Redirect.aspx7url=http%3A%2F%2Fwvvw.logos.corn%2Fresource%2Fgs-rar-06 (which resolves to http://wvvw.logos.com/resource/gs-rar-06, which doesn't exist).

Third, if you're curious and want to ask someone what on earth is "gs-rar-06" you have to type it in yourself, because that text is not selectable to copy and paste it.

So I think this page needs to be redesigned with more info, and better linking to the Logos website. It's been requested that we be able to buy books directly from within Logos (like we could in Logos 3), but I'm not sure that will ever happen in our lifetimes. It would be enough for them to clean up this problem that's been around for such a long time.

I certainly have, but there's so many problems with those guides that one gets discouraged from even reporting them. Not everyone has the time to write such a thorough report as Caleb did (great job!), and if they really cared, you'd think they'd have done something themselves by now. Take a look at the Product Guide to Greek Bible Texts for example: "Last Updated: 11/11/2005". Yeah... Not surprisingly it includes things that aren't sold anymore, and misses things that are. Or Greek Bible Texts & Tools, which claims lots of things are in prepub that haven't been so for a long long time. You'd think they had internal lists of actions to take when a book is put on prepub, ships or is withdrawn, and that those lists included updating the appropriate guide[s ] -- but seemingly not.

This isn't rocket science. It doesn't require a first class developer. There must be dozens of people just on the forums who could easily fix these guides in no time for a few dollars in Logos credits. -- How much do they lose each year because people can't find what they're looking for (or didn't know they were looking for)?

Btw, it seems they have done something. Second, when you click to visit Logos.com, it tries to look up the book by its resource ID, which has not for a very long time (since prior to Logos 4) been the way the Logos website identifies resources. It uses SKU numbers now. So you get a redirect URL like this: www.logos.com/cgi/Redirect.aspx7url=http%3A%2F%2Fwvvw.logos.corn%2Fresource%2Fgs-rar-06 (which resolves to http://wvvw.logos.com/resource/gs-rar-06, which doesn't exist).

In the Reading List you cited, the journals don't work (btw: your resolved webpage wouldn't work either way, as it saays W V V W instead of W W W). But if I take the dictionaries:

they do! All those "locked" ones work (with exception of the SDA Bible Dictionary, resource abbreviation "iv-dict").

You may test yourself: point your browser to http://www.logos.com/resource/isbe which is the what the following does

and you will see it redirects automatically to http://www.logos.com/product/3875/international-standard-bible-encyclopedia

This now also works for the ANFxx resource IDs I had in mind in my earlier post (*makes mental note to someday update the long ECF reading list to include links to catholic ANF/NPNF as well*). Of course, resources such as these that are not sold individually won't work, but then you'll get something like here with the "anch" (Anchor Bible Dictionary)

Yes, and that's still the case. They redirected (some of) the resource/XXXX pages to the product pages - maybe the will do for the ebooks pages as well.

The search still doesn't know the resource name abbreviations:

But as a contrast I have found another hidden gem: the long numerical codes that refer to PBs or eBooks resolve to a Logos product page as well:

Which seems to be quite senseless at first and should sometime be corrected. However, if you look closely at the product-not-found page

and just replace logos with vyrso in that long URL - voila!

That got me thinking - if there is an automated redirect from resources.... was there a workaround for these ebooks?

Oops, that was my screenshot reader software's OCR fail. Normally it does a pretty good job. I'm surprised. I'm also surprised I didn't catch it. I usually have an eagle eye, even for subtle things like that.
