I use Avira Free on my XP machine and it came up with the following:

Virus or unwanted program 'TR/Dropper.Gen5 [trojan]'

detected in file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Mike Ballai\Local Settings\Application Data\Logos4\Logos4.exe.

Action performed: Deny access

I haven't yet restarted my machine, but it keeps showing up when Logos begins. I know it's not a Trojan so how do I deal with it? What does that file do?

Michael, this was reported by another user. See the last two posts here: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/44195.aspx

You should be able to configure your anti-virus program to treat Logos as a known safe program. There is some discussion about this with another user who was having a similar problem with a different anti-virus program (Webroot), but the principle is the same:

You might also want to contact the makers of Avira (though if it's the free version I'm not sure how responsive they'll be to user feedback) and let them know you've encountered a FALSE POSITIVE. They can then add it to their database of known programs that are tested safe so it won't get caught as a trojan in the future.

EDIT: I was still editing my answer when Mark posted his. I didn't realize there was already specific discussion of Avira.

    I had the same problem.

I just shut down Avira during the Logos update and indexing. Next, when Avira blocked the alleged infected file, I right-clicked on the file's name (in Avira) and selected ignore (or always ignore - I don't remember).

I don't know if there's really a threat, but since I need my Logos 4... anyway, I hope we won't have problems.

I could get Avira to restore the object, but it kept going off on Malware every time I started Logos.

I posted on their forum, but got no response. Given that it's freeware, I suppose that they aren't too particular about support. And since I don't have any investment in Avira, I decided to uninstall it, and put in MS Security Essentials. Never crazy about MS, but so far ok with me and Logos.

    See this post.

I have reported it to Avira. You should be able to
configure Avira to allow it as an exception. You'll have to do this
with both Logos4\Logos4.exe as well as Logos4\System\Logos4.exe
