Text of highlight truncated in Notes

I am noticing, now that I am trying to organize my notes with highlights, that my highlights are being truncated. That is, the text that is highlighted appears with an ellipsis. I am using notes/highlights for commentaries on Genesis, and it appears that some notes have ellipsis, and others run off the screen. There is absolutely no difference between the "Full" and "Compact" settings.
Anyone else noticing this?

I assume that you are referring to what you see in the screen shot below. If you will notice, Amos 4:13 is a long section; Amos 5:14-15 is truncated. The answer to this is that the first was made using the new mobile app, the second was made in L4 on my Mac.
I don't think Logos intended the highlight notes to be used as notes per se. What you are seeing is actually the title for the note. Notice that there is a box under Amos 5:14-15. This is where the "note" would go. I assume the reason for the truncation is to keep the note files smaller. The reason the titles are there in the first place is to help you know which note goes with which highlight. I think the reason the mobile app puts the entire passage in is that it is a bug, or that the app isn't capable (yet) of truncating the title. Thats my guess at least.

I understand that. It makes sense. But that would mean, for example, that it is impossible to print out my notes in a single note file. That makes notes not as useful - it would be good if I could access all my notes on a passage, book, or section of Scripture.

I agree. I am not sure if anyone else was doing what you are suggesting. Apple recently released an update to their book reader and it turns all highlights into notecards which can be studied.

I, too, would like to see this adjustment/improvement made. When I highlight on ipad or iphone, the note is seen in its entirety, but when I highlight on MAC, the highlighted text is truncated. Please make the improvement that NOTHING is truncated and the entire note can be seen. I like to print out my notes and have at a glance all of my highlights and the truncated ones are practically useless. Thanks.

Also not good when searching.

I would like to see this as well. As a workaround highlight on iPad when resource is available.

I would also love to have the notes not truncated. It is really helpful to have all of the highlights as your notes. It provides a summary of the most important things I read and can also be exported. I would recommend having the Logos Mac Desktop behave like my iPad and not truncate anything. Thanks.

Ahh… but highlights CAN be searched.
It's not good when text is truncated and you search My Content. You can search for text in a palette/style in Entire Library but it takes e.g. 30s vs 0.01s in My Content

Concur, personally would prefer complete highlighted selection in Notes Title (with display option in Notes to show abbreviated Title on 1 line).

KS4J - Although this change would be an improvement, it looks more like a bug that needs corrected. The devices are not behaving the same way. I'd like to hear from Logos to see if there are plans to make this correction.

I understand what you guys are saying, and I think it would be great if some sort of change could be made that would accommodate your desired usage, but I think you are absolutely wrong. Again, I stress that what everyone is currently asking for is not the complete quote in the note body but (as you say) in the Notes Title. I see that you have thought this through to some extent in that you desire for the option of an abbreviated title, but this is short sighted. The "Notes Title" should continue to be an automatic truncated version of the quote. This should be used to identity and organize your notes. You can change it to anything you want (i.e. thematic titles such as Justification). It should remain an auto truncated quote merely for the sake of identification purposes. Second, there should be a line for the quote in its entirety. Finally, there should remain a field for personal comments.
Here is what I would suggest:
Title: (truncated auto quote is good)
Quote: (passage in its entirety)

I am not a programmer, but it seems to me that these two searches are doing the same thing. I don't know why they would be so dramatically different in speed. Is this an issue of optimizing the program?

The main reason is the inefficiency of the field search (using pallett/style) as an ALL TEXT search takes 5.5s vs.37s on my laptop. The Documents index is much smaller than the resources' Library index, so a My Content (All Text) search takes 0.01s.

For grins, highlighted Philippians 4:4-8 in ASV on iPad using Vyrso 2.02, then edited Note, which had "Rejoice in the Lord always: again I will say, R...." on iPad, but syncs to Logos 4.5a RC 1 with complete selection in the Note Title. In contrast, if highlighting of same verses is done in Logos 4.5a RC 1, the Note title has "4Rejoice in the … on these things. "
Concur Logos iOS app 2.0.2 and Logos 4.5a RC 1 create different Note titles for highlighted text; sent email to Logos for follow-up with reference to this thread.

From a technical perspective I don't see why Logos did not provide a pure palette/style search of My Content (without text input). When you create a highlight they could add a field (style) entry with the highlight text that is put into the Documents index. Instead they kludged a style match into a resource search of Entire Library, which implies that the style information is fetched from the Notes database.

You can search for a word that's been truncated away? Don't think so...

You don't seem to have understood that one of the main reasons people want the whole quote is because they want to be able to quickly review a book by rereading their highlights. If the only way of doing that is by expanding the whole file and reading every third field, well, then it's still going to be faster to skim the actual book.
Furthermore, we've had numerous requests from people who want to print out their highlights before reviewing them. Your idea makes that just as impossible as it is now.
No, keep it like now, but with a setting where we can choose full or truncated titles. And make sure the whole quote is remembered, so that it can be searched (and altered from truncated back to full).

You are searching the wrong field. I just did a search for "ministry growth." Notice that "ministry growth" is not in the truncated title line of the note. By the way, it took less than 2 seconds to find it for me. [The brevity of the search was because this was a personal book]

I understood fine. I even agree that it would be a nice feature. BUT… it would be a new feature and different than what Logos is currently offering. The current implementation is designed for people to take notes. The way it was designed shows no indication that Logos intended for it to be used the way you are suggesting. Personally, I think that there is value in both.
By the way, do you know of anyone offering the feature that you are requesting? I'm sincerely asking… I know that Apple announced this feature with their new textbooks, but that was the first I have heard of it. It sounds like a great idea!

Please forgive me if LOGOS has responded to this in another thread, but this truncating of highlighted notes on desktop is quite annoying. We've discussed here (and other places) proposed changes, but I would like to hear from LOGOS development about this. A work around is to read / highlight all from mobile device, but not all resources are available.
Thanks.

This same highlighting functionality is available via Amazon on the kindle. If you go to your kindle.amazon.com homepage you can view all of your highlights (or at least up to the percentage that publisher will allow). Not the prettiest interface, but it is functional.

John,
The desktop behavior is by design. The note title is intended to be a short summary of the selected text (which is why the desktop truncates it) and was never intended to show the entire note text. As such, there is a bug in the mobile app because it doesn't follow the desktop design. If you wish to see the entire note text it's a simple matter to simply select the note on the desktop. I hope this helps.

Thanks, Kevin - I think that there have been great insight on this thread and on others regarding this comment that it is by design. It is not intuitive that the entire highlighted text to NOT be placed in the note. Since highlights can be placed in multiple notefiles, it makes sense that we be able to see the entire text so that we can have all the highlights in one place and not have to refer to the resources. Also makes it easy to print out.
