Yet another request for Linux.

Now that you have a Mac version and an Android version, much of the work for having a viable Linux version has likely been done. Please consider taking the last few steps needed to bring Logos to the Linux platform.

The additional market for such a move might be hard to quantify. I certainly have been looking at Logos, but have held off because there is no version for my platform of choice. I have read posts in various forums by others who also would like to see a Linux version available.

Respectfully,

Stephen

    Welcome to the forums Stephen!

It's not likely that Logos will build a Linux version, simply because the market share is so small it would not be worth the cost to develop it. Second, Logos is way behind in its implementation of Logos for Mac. No one in the Mac camp wants Logos to widen it's focus even further (beyond, iOS, Android, e.g.), and give less to fixing the remaining parity issues there.

You can search for more of the discussion on this by entering the following into Google (and probably most other search engines): linux site:community.logos.com (note: single space after "linux" no other spaces)This will take you to other discussions on these forums, and give you more info.

Help links: WIKI;  Logos 6 FAQ. (Phil. 2:14, NIV)

  • No one in the Mac camp wants Logos to widen it's focus even further (beyond, iOS, Android, e.g.), and give less to fixing the remaining parity issues there.

Wiki has Mac and PC User Interface Differences => Feature Parity  Thankful for many feature improvements in Logos 4.5 on Mac: 18 items were removed from list [8-|] (noticed 4 items are technically not viable for Logos 4 so 9 feature parity items remain to be done)  Logos 4.5 on Mac has awesome abilities and some annoyances.

Observation: Logos 4 Windows can run in a virtual machine on Linux (or BSD or other open source distributions).  Oracle's VirtualBox is free.  However, a Microsoft Windows license for virtual use is not free.  If only use Logos 4 in a Windows virtual machine, have option to not install anti-virus (and can disable many services).  Option: can run Logos 4 in full screen mode along with hiding Windows task bar so Logos 4 appears in its own window on Linux (or other open source distribution).

If Logos changes their display engine to use HTML5 in a future version, not know if an open source "port" could be done for very low cost.

If Logos could cheaply compile for open source use, one option for Logos is a virtual machine that has Logos icon on desktop so user can launch, sign-in, then download their Logos library, followed by indexing.  Suspect providing one virtual machine would be less expensive than trying to build appropriate packages for installation across hundreds of open source distributions.

Oracle has free pre-built virtual machines => http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/community/developer-vm/index.html

Another open source option is installing an Android simulator, then side loading Logos mobile app(s).

Third option: open source web browsers can use http://biblia.com for access to your Logos library.

You have not told me anything I did not already know. I use VirtualBox quite extensively. Despite that, I will NOT run Logos in a virtual machine. I have my reasons.

HTML 5 runs in Firefox on Linux already with the exception of the H.264 patent-encumbered codec. If one uses the open-source OGV/Theora or VP8/WebM formats for media, then the cost of development is lower as patent royalties on the media would not be needed.

In case you didn't notice, every one of the pre-built virtual machines runs Oracle Linux. There are no pre-built Windows virtual machines. Indeed, the site says that they are for development purposes and not for redistribution. Thus, that route is ruled out.

Android simulator? Mobile app? I don't think that would work so well on non-touch devices. It might work for tablets, but then those are likely to be running either Android or IOS anyway.

Web browser? What happens when one does not have a live broadband connection to the Internet and needs to use those resources? No thanks.

Looking at => http://distrowatch.com/index.php that tracks hundreds of open source distributions, including Linux variants, wondered which Linux distribution(s) are being requested ?  Distrowatch has a Top 10 list => http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

Curious about package method request ? => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_package_formats

Without a Windows virtual machine, currently other choice for running Logos 4 is using Mac on OS X.  Apple licensing legally restricts OS X for use on Apple hardware, which has been tested and upheld in court => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psystar_Corporation

Appreciate having reasons.  Suspect phrase: "DOS is not done until Lotus does not run" rings some bells.

Personally Thankful for Logos Greek Morphology visual highlighting using Logos 4 on Mac and PC; wiki has Extended Tips for Visual Filters => Examples of visual filters that enables one to see the range of verbal nuance expressed in a passage.

Likewise Thankful for over 20,000 digital resources that are available in Logos and Vyrso for purchase and use in my Logos 4 library.

Concur.  Personally learned when using 64 bit OS X kernel that 64 bit Windows is noticeably faster than 32 bit Windows for indexing my Logos 4 library.

Oracle includes link to => Oracle VM Templates that can be used for production and redistribution.

Noticed wiki Mac and PC User Interface Differences => Feature Parity includes:

PC Syriac ligature connected correctly, but Mac displays Syriac text as independent letters. Mac final forms are disconnected Logos User Voice suggestion => Connect Syriac Ligature on Mac

    • Logos: Text display is a function of the operating system, not Logos. Some ancient scripts have errors on certain platforms. We plan to implement our own low-level text shaping / rendering in a future release of Logos Bible Software, to ensure consistency across all platforms, but until then will be unable to address text shaping bugs at the OS level.

Seems http://biblia.com has a local cache in your browser, which does require pre-planning to download stuff when have internet connection.

Personally like downloading Logos resources for offline use with an iPad so have a variety of resources available to look at while listening to a sermon.

Found a Linux Journal article about using an iPad + Linode for development => http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/swap-your-laptop-ipad-linode
