Logos 3/Libronix Resource Creation after March 31, 2012

Our mission is to build the best tools for Bible study.
Today, those tools are Logos 4 for your Mac or PC, the Logos app for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, and Biblia.com on the web. We are devoting more resources to making these tools even better—and developing new tools for the future.
Deciding what projects to do means also deciding what projects not to do. As we announced at the beginning of the year, we will stop creating Libronix resources on March 31, 2012. We want to be efficient in our use of resources; building new products for the old platform takes time and money we’d rather put into forward-looking development.
Effective March 31, 2012, we still stop creating Libronix resources. We won’t disable Libronix / Logos 3, and we’re not retroactively removing anything. The books you own today will continue to work in Libronix. There will still be support help available on Logos.com, and you can also visit the Logos forums anytime for help.
However, newly-created resources shipped after March 31, 2012 will only work in Logos 4.
By moving to Logos 4, you will not lose any books you own. You can access your books and content in Logos 4 on your Mac or PC, on the iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and on the web at Biblia.com.
Visit http://www.logos.com/4ways to see your options for moving from Libronix to Logos 4.
Thanks for being a Logos customer. We look forward to continuing to serve you in the years to come.

Kent,
Thanks for the FYI.
If I may be so bold, the only real question I have at the moment is:
Should I come across a book that I have in L3 but not in L4 how would I go about getting information on whether it will be re-compiled, or not?

With a handful of exceptions, all books created up to March 31, 2012 work in both Libronix and in Logos 4. So the books you're using right now in Libronix you can also use in Logos 4. (Most of our books can be used on the iPhone, iPad, and Android apps, as well as Biblia.com.) After March 31, 2012, new resources will work only in Logos 4.

I have Libronix 3 expanded package and several add ons. I have recently downloaded the free engine version of Logos 4, however many of the books in my library do not appear in Logos 4 and are not accesible; for example the exegetical guide. Access to the Greek and Hebrew dictionaries, lexicons and concordances. Vines expository dictionary, tense, mood and voice. I have contacted someone in the sales department and they said that the only way to access these books is to upgrade to a base package. (Scholars) However in reading your article I am under the impression that ALL of my Libronix books will transfer and work in Logos 4.

Welcome [:D]
Known item: Libronix 3 PBB resources do not transfer to Logos 4; have to be rebuilt using Personal Book tool; wiki has => Personal Books
Apologies: appears all my non-PBB Libronix 3 resources are available for me to use in Logos 4. In fact, Logos 4 scans my Libronix installation for unlocked resources, and copies them to my Logos4 folder. Thankful can use Libronix 3 and Logos 4 at the same time.
Kent Hendricks said:Visit http://www.logos.com/4ways to see your options for moving from Libronix to Logos 4.
The 4 ways page includes link to Minimal Crossgrade since many resources were added/reformated for use in Logos 4: primarily Reverse Interlinear resources, Biblical People, Biblical Places, Biblical Things, Lectionaries, and Timelines.
Wonder if Logos 4 indexing is complete ? wiki has Getting Started with Logos => Installation + Indexing Logos 4 Exegetical Guide uses indexes (lacks a lot until indexing is complete)
In your Logos 4 library, wonder how many resources appear for type:lexicon ?
If using stable Logos 4 release, other option is contacting Logos Technical Support => http://www.logos.com/about/contact

Sorry, I just read your post. Goodness Kent. its been so long ago I had them wrote down once after checking the resources against a printout of L3…..I would have to go back and check. But I do not think that they were that important to remember – or I would have..hehehe….but I will look at it again…..[instead of list checking - is there a quicker way?]

After March 31, will I still be able to buy resources for Libronix? As in, will everything available for purchase for Libronix now, still be available?
I will only have to upgrade to Logos 4 if I want to buy new resources that have not yet been released, right?

As with most Logos communications, the key questions are not answered (no offense to Kent; he's a good guy).
But last winter, when they 'made the decision' (forgetting to announce it), they took the scripts that deliver the license off the Logos.com site. The work around was to download the volume from the ftp site and then sync the licenses on the internet. In some cases (maybe unrelated), that didn't work.
So, who knows. Maybe someone will try buying something next Monday.
Absent a couple pre-pubs that look many-moons away, my credit card is looking nice and clean-ish and my spouse is now happily speaking to me again.

Wiki Getting Started with Logos has => Installation + Indexing
Wiki page => Getting Started with Logos has many Tips and links for learning and using Logos 4.
Libronix 3 is installed once for all users on a computer while Logos 4 is installed for each user so Libronix 3 and Logos 4 can peacefully coexist. By default, Logos 4 scans resources in Libronix 3, then copies the ones that have not been updated into your Logos 4 folder along with downloading updated resources.
Logos 4 new features need new resources for their use; may want to consider minimal crossgrade => http://www.logos.com/minimalcrossgrade

Not really an issue for me, since I've decided not to purchase any new resources in Logos until the Notes in version 4 is fixed. The current state of 4 is unusable for my purposes.

What version of L4 are you using? There was a lot of changes to notes in 4.5
What specific things make L4 unusable for you?

I got tired of checking by the list so I did the scan thing. Apparently everything seems to be there, provided the scanner worked properly.....

Graham,
While there are a number of things that bug me, the two most significant issues are the lack of a contens/index view - making custom sorting difficult if not impossible, and the fact the when reading/editing notes which are longer than will fit in a window, the title will scoll out of view, making it easy to lose your place. I have dozens of notes files each filled with many entries (50 or more). I often need to search/compare/edit several simulataneously. This was not difficult in 3, but all but impossible in 4. Notes in 3 also has superior embedded linking capabilities, allowing you to set up a notes file as a "powerpoint" type slideshow for group Bible studies.

Hi Mark
Thanks for the clarification.
You may want to add your votes to the suggestion to enhance notes functionality at http://logos.uservoice.com/forums/42823-logos-bible-software-4/suggestions/1619077-rework-notes-function-in-one-or-multiple-phases
You will see that many people are looking for enhanced notes functionality - certainly some of the things you are looking for are included in that suggestion.

I have made a lot of annotations in my Libronix-Library. Is there a way to transform all annotations to Logos 4? I have already Logos 4, but I do not see my annotations. I thank you for your answer in advance. God bless! Henryk

There is a sync note command for L4 to bring your notes over, but there is also a update notes command for L3 that must be done prior to this…but I could not find it on the wiki page, but am sure someone will read this and know where it is….

The command to import notes is Import ALL. The sync command syncs your notes with L4's servers in the cloud. Here is some more info on importing L3 content into L4: http://www.logos.com/l4/support/importing-ldls-content

What about the Logos March Madness resources? Are you eliminating the Libronix 3 versions of these? Does this also mean the Alexander Strauch Church Leadership Series scheduled to release next week (that I ordered on PrePub in Jan. 2011) will only by Logos 4? If so, I am canceling the order, and every other order I have on PrePub. I spent hundreds of dollars getting a new computer to run Logos 4, and it still doesn't run right. I will continue to use Libronix 3, and will not be buying anything new from you.

Scott ... welcome to the forums.
In answer to your concerns:
(1) As far as we know, any resources produced prior to 1 April 2012 will have a Libronix version (with a few exceptions, where not feasible). So your Madness excitement should still be purchasable in Libronix3 format.
(2) And yes, resources shipped 1 April 2012 and thereafter will be in Logos4 format only. I was one of the big whiners back in January, and the CEO was gracious enough to extend the deadline to allow additional purchasing time.
You mention a problem with Logos4? That would be the easy solution?

Yes, I have several problems with Logos 4. It is such a memory hog it takes forever to be able to use it, and I have a lot of resources compiled with the Personal Book Builder that cannot be used in Logos 4. Bigger and newer is not always better.

Well, you're preaching to the choir ... Libronix is my favorite and I've pretty much bought all I want from Logos. But I can certainly empathize with some of the new pre-pubs that are about to ship that you've been planning for.
The only other solution is to try to optimize Logos4 on your PC ... the forum can help in that area?

Without any screen shots or log files, it is going to be hard to troubleshoot your problem. Here is the page that tells us how to turn on logging: http://www.logos.com/L4/Support/DiagnosticLogging
IMHO, Logos 4 was poorly design, and it requires everything to be in its default location. Therefore your notes MUST BE in their default location.
So, if you could enable logging, ensure your notes are in their default location (if you did not change them, do not worry about it), then try to import them again. If you do not see them, please upload your logs to the forum so we can see what is going wrong.

I too still use L3, but I use it for the notes function because the note function is so poor (even after the massive updates to it) compare to L3. About once a month or so, I delete all of my notes in L4 and re-import my 3 notes into L4.

I think this is is a huge mistake on the part of Logos. I own both, but have never moved to 4 because of all the problems others have had. I don't need the hassle, since Libronix works fine for my needs.
I have lots of prepubs, etc. And now (I am learning for the first time--having gotten the message when I fired up Libronix tonight) I find out that you won't be preparing a Libronix version??????? Really????
I am going on a missions trip Monday, and will be out of commission for about half a month. But I seriously hope Logos rethinks this.
As for the announcement, was it emailed to all Logos owners in December?? This is serious, and it should have been clearly stated before I was allowed to get a prepub, thinking it would be produced in the earlier version!
Very shortsighted thinking, in my view. I hope enough pressure is put to bear that you rethink this decision!

Todd,
I do not know (remember) if Logos sent out an email, but they clearly stated that they are no longer going to be producing resources in L3 format. Then again, I do not know of any company that sends out an email to their customer base when they are going to sundown an older version of one of their products.
While I still have issues with L4 (and I still use L3) , L4 has changed a lot since it has came out. Therefore, do not allow the problems other people are having with L4 from you moving to L4. You might not have their problems.

Hi Todd,
Although I still have L3 installed (now in a minority), my preferred tool for some time has been L4. It's more than overcome all its teething problems. And it's far more powerful than L3 is--even if some folks will point to a few features that are still missing (ergo I'm not alone in having L3 installed, even if I"m in a shrinking minority).
If you write sermons or prepare bible studies, L4 can put a turbo charger on your efforts if you'll give it an honest shot.
Many blessings on your studies....Grace & Peace,
Bill

Hi again
Unfortunately, I can't use Logos 3, as it is prohibitively slow on my
ebook. Libronix is great however. In a couple of years I will buy a computer that will run Logos 3,
but until then, I have to stick with Libronix DLS 3.0g.I just bought The Expositor's Bible Commentary, but now the option
to download/install it on Libronix is missing. It's an old resource,
so it should still be compatible with Libronix, but how to install it?I have downloaded the 12 files from my 'orders' page, and copied
them into my resource folder, but they don't appear in my library.I have done the 'refresh resources' process, and tried deleting
the 'cache' folder, as suggested here:
http://www.logos.com/support/article/565But still The Expositor's Bible Commentary won't appear in my
library.Does anyone have any idea
how to install resources on Libronix now that the easy option is
gone?Thanks!

Go to the orders page, click on "Download Instructions for Previous Versions" to expand that section, and there should be an orange Unlock button in there. If you click that, it will run the script to unlock the resources from that order in Libronix. If you can't find such a section or it doesn't have that button, then copy this text and paste into your browser's URL box: https://www.logos.com/cgi/LibronixUnlockScriptDownload.aspx?ORDERTXNID=xxxxxxx (replace the xxxxxxx with the order number which should be in the URL of your order page), and press Enter.
If that doesn't work, then you'll need to contact Customer Service and have them help you.

My problem was that 'Download Instructions for Previous Versions' is not appearing on my order page.
But the URL that you posted fixed the problem, once I substituted the xxxxxxx for my order number as you suggested. Thanks so much! I have my commentary now!

I bet they'd love to have me. But I don't think I could handle all the frustration at how much there is left to do to get Logos up to my standards of quality. It's a never-ending task. I'd be wanting to get my fingers into every single group's work (well, at least testing, development, and book editing), and I'd go crazy trying to do it all. This way at least I can step back and stop when I realize my addiction is getting the better of me. If I worked there, I'd get vacations once in a while, but that wouldn't be enough to keep me sane. And frankly, I think Bob wouldn't want all that time spent on perfectionism. So I would never make it up to a level in the company where I could really influence things in the direction I'd want them to go. And if I did get my way, the company would probably go out of business because it would take so long to get anything shipped. So no, it's best for me to remain as a gadfly off here on the sidelines.
