Indexing Problem

I reinstalled Logos Mac on my Macbook Pro last night.  Indexing started as I went to bed and was completely finished this morning (my library consists of 6000+ books).  However, as I rebuilt my personal books this morning (a mere 7 short "books" consisting of 7 sermon series I preached), indexing started again...as expected.  However, those 7 PBB files are indexing about 1% per hour.  That seems insanely slow.  Any ideas?

  • Wonder if Energy Saver turned off MacBook Pro before indexing completed ? or Indexer crashed ?

If so, then indexing started over when rebuilding personal books.

Personal experience is Logos 4.5 on Mac takes hours to index => Logos 4.5 Beta 12 Library Indexing Speed Regression - Mac is Slow

If have diagnostic logging enabled, can open Indexer.log file to monitor progress.

Optional: download and use 5504.Logos4MacLogging.app.zip to display your logging setting, then change to enable logging.

No, it's not crashing...and no, energy saver features are not active.  Honestly, this is the first time I've encountered such a dramatically long indexing process.  I indexed my entire library last night and it finished overnight.  Now I've got a whole 7 books via PBB and it's at 16% and started over 6 hours ago.  Seems strange.

In enabled diagnostic logging.  Don't really know what to do with it though.

So is this a beta issue?  I'm not nearly cool enough (nor smart enough) to be in that wonderful group of people with more patience than I.  I'm running a stable version of Logos and am really wondering if this is the new normal or if something is wrong with my machine or configuration.  I'm supposed to be presenting to a group of pastors tomorrow on some of the benefits of Logos Bible Software.  I'm wishing that was last weekend when everything worked just fine.  Good thing I still have a PC, I guess.  Better get it updated...or so it appears.  Kills me to revert back to the PC world for this...especially with a dominant mac user group of pastors.  But I need something that works.

Since you are not on beta, no.

I don't know how to read logs, so I am not much help here. The point of enabling logging is to provide a log for another user (such as KS4J) to "look under the hood" to see what is causing a slowdown or crash. Currently Logos does not automatically create those logs for every user. This behavior can be changed so that logs are created 1) for one session or 2) always. The links KS4J provided should help you with getting these logs.

So, I have no idea if I did this right...but here's my attempt at following directions using words I'm not sure I even understand.  Is this the log file that you who are wiser than I might be able to learn something from?

Yes, the Logging folder contains diagnostic log files.  The Logos4.log file has a message: Indexer is already running with status IndexingLibrary.  Since the indexer started before diagnostic logging was enabled, the Indexer.log diagnostic file does not exist.

Caveat: restarting Indexer would cause Indexer.log file to be created, however, indexing would start over.

One option is restarting Mac, watch for blue Logos icon to appear in menu bar.  After 10 minutes if blue Logos icon is still in menu bar, could compress Logging folder and attach zip file to a forum reply.

Now I've got a whole 7 books via PBB and it's at 16% and started over 6 hours ago.  Seems strange.

Concur with strange; especially if % progress has not changed for couple hours.

On Logos 4.5b Beta 5, scanned a folder with 4 personal books.  After restarting Logos 4 Mac, personal book indexing took less than a minute to complete.

Note: earlier this month using Logos 4.5b Beta 2 on Mac, experienced 7 hours to index 6,267 resources on my iMac, followed by 2 hours to merge library index postings.  For grins, have issued rebuild index in Logos 4.5b Beta 5 (deletes, then builds Bible, Library, and Personal Book indexes); anticipating over 10 hours to index 6,307 resources.  Also changed "Automatically download updates" to No to avoid a download interrupting index building.

KS4J, I'm very grateful for your help in this issue.  I'm submitting a new log.  Is this more helpful?  FYI...in 21 hours of indexing, I've reached 45% completion...and still running.

Indexer.log shows 3 hours 34 minutes 49 seconds elapsed for Bible index creation for 986 resources.  By way of comparison, my Bible index creation took 1 hour 54 minutes 11 seconds for 1,278 resources.  Comparing indexing times for individual resources noticed one resource was faster on your Mac, but several indexing times on my 2.93 GHz i7 took half as long.

Noted library indexing started at 03:30:53 for 6,078 resources.  At 19:18:42, indexing was done for 3,644 resources.  Comparing to my Library indexing for 6,307 resources with same progress indicator of 36.6 % in Indexer.log file, the time was almost half way done.  Hence estimating 15 to 16 hours more for Library index completion.

Wondering if hard drive in MacBook Pro is 5400 RPM ?  Indexing is disk intensive so a faster drive would take less time (albeit faster hard drive needs more power so battery life is reduced).  Mac Sales has Do It Yourself (DIY) upgrade kits => http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/SATA/DIY/ including 640 GB 7200 RPM for $ 104.99 => http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Samsung/YHM640JJ/ and 500 GB 7200 RPM with Solid State Disk hybrid for $ 154.99 => http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/YST9500562AS/ with 750 GB 7200 RPM/SSD Hybrid for $ 217.99 => http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/YST750LX003/ (bit better price per storage than 500 GB, which explains # 2 in popularity for purchases).

    Newegg has 750 GB/SSD hybrid bare drive for $ 174.99 (plus shipping) => http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148837

Woke up this morning and it was done indexing.  While I don't understand the erratic pace, I'm grateful.  Guess my sermon was good enough for this morning. [;)]

KS4J, you go above and beyond!  Thanks for the links and ideas on a faster hard drive.  Based on the reviews, it looks like that may be money well spent...particularly for Logos Bible Software.  I'll keep snooping...and reading up on how to do a clean install of Mac OSX.  Looks like YouTube has no shortage of help for the DYI community.

    Blessed Sunday to you all!

So I followed your advice and the best word to describe a few different experiences the past 24 hours is "WOW."

    1. The new hard drive was SIMPLE to install.
    2. Time Machine is INCREDIBLE.  I've been keeping things backed up but never had to use it yet.  I have no idea how long it actually took.  All I can say is i started it when I went to bed last night and woke up this morning to my new hard drive looking EXACTLY like my old one did.  FANTASTIC!!!!!
    3. While I've not had to index Logos yet, I can tell you that loading and searching is INCREDIBLY fast!!!!  It's rather hard to believe so far.
    4. As many have noted, a faster hard drive will drain the battery faster...and all I can say is, "yep, it sure does."  But so far, the trade off was well worth it.

My thanks to you KS4J.  You've been a huge help to me.  Next time I do a full index (AFTER the sermon is done), I'll post the experience.

    Blessed!

    Lloyd
