4.5c Beta 4 (4.53.0.2187) will be available for testing shortly (this evening or tomorrow morning).

To update to Beta 4, enter the Update Now command if you’ve switched to the beta channel before, or enter the Set Update Channel to Beta command if you’re on a stable version (such as 4.5b SR-1). To install Beta 4 from scratch, see the notes and download link on this thread.

"Indexing is up to 30% faster." - it would be interesting to know how this was achieved. Thanks!

This was achieved through:

  • caching and reusing ICU BreakIterator instances
  • removing unnecessary temporary strings and string copies
  • removing some other unnecessary temporary object creation

Turns out that a good way to make code faster is never to run it in the first place! Smile

I just updated the release notes to indicate that the greatest improvement will be seen when performing a full reindex. In the case where a few resources have been updated and need to be merged into the main index, the dominating factor will be the index merging, which hasn't changed in this release. (Index merging is very dependent on disk I/O performance, so running off an SSD should speed it up considerably.)

That's impressive and be sure I will test it (and again when I upgrade to 4.5c on my laptop with new SSD).

From the logs 4.5c took 1h 9m 11s & 4.5b took 1h 25m 28s  with 960 in Library, 69 in Bible and 2 in Personal. A saving of c. 16m or 19% is very good!

Note: on Desktop (below) with 7200 RPM HDD.

My Laptop with SSD took almost the same time (1h 10m 53s) in 4c.  Which is about 2.3x faster than with the 5400 RPM HDD!
