This morning I realised that L4 wasn't running and I hadn't shut it down so I checked for error logs and there aren't any... The last thing it reports is this:

2012-07-05 22:13:01.8730    1    Info    LDLS4.AppModel    App is now idle.
2012-07-06 00:00:03.8960    1    Info    HomePageViewModel    Regenerating
2012-07-06 00:00:03.9250    1    Info    HomePageViewModel    Deleting today's cache C:\Users\Tom\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\.....\HomePage\2012-06-30_4.53.0.2264
2012-07-06 00:00:03.9950    1    Info    HomePageViewModel    Committing cleared item preferences.
2012-07-06 00:00:04.0020    1    Info    HomePageViewModel    OpenDocument called

I'm running 4.5c, version 4.53.0.2264

Is it possible that your computer did an automatic reboot at midnight (unrelated to Logos)?

That would be a nice simple explanation but no, my computer didn't reboot. Maybe it's a July 6 thing and you will all find out in a couple of hours. :)

It sounds like you have Logos set up to install updates automatically at midnight. We did just release 4.5c SR-2...

Thanks,

Actually I have Use Internet set to off so it shouldn't be doing anything with updates or anything else. Is no one else having this problem?

Here are the last things the log says after I stopped using it last night. Again there is no crash log. I'm using 4.5c SR-2.

If you set it "Off" in a session where it was previously "On" you have to restart L4 before it stops using the Internet (and vice-versa)!

Thanks Dave but I have restarted several times since then. I see that Logos is still monitoring my Internet state even with use Internet turned off. I turned the Internet connection off at 10:07pm and the log mentions that even though it's not using the Internet.

I generally only turn the L4 internet on once a month and get my new books and update anything else. I see from the forum that there's a large download of updated resources so perhaps I will do that sooner this time. None of this explains why L4 is closing itself at midnight.

FYI I had Firefox and several Word documents open and nothing else was different in the morning. I can only assume that it's somehow related to the last thing Logos did at midnight.

Hi Tom,

Can you post a copy of your full logs the next time you leave Logos 4 open when you go to bed, and find it--and it alone-closed the next morning?

Hi Tommy,

Sorry, it's taken a while but the 'pumpkin' only appears randomly and I don't always leave Logos running. Here is the log file from yesterday when it quit at midnight again7026.Logos4 pumpkin.zip.

Hi Tom,

Whatever is ending Logos 4 it doesn't seem to be Logos 4 itself. Your logs don't record a crash, they just--end. There might be more information in the Event Viewer. Below is how to get to that.

  1. Open Event Viewer: Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.

  2. In Event Viewer, in the console tree, click Application. In the details pane, make sure that there are no errors reported in the application event log that indicate the restore was unsuccessful.

  3. If you notice any events that disclose an error, double-click the event to open the Event Properties, and then read the description of the event.

  4. Research and resolve errors or inconsistencies as soon as possible. For more information about the error, click the URL in the Description box, or search for relevant articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=18175).

  5. After you have checked for errors, close Event Viewer.

Look for anything flagged as an error. When you click on it look for references to Logos 4 in the box at the bottom center. If you see anything at around midnight on the 13th copy and paste the text here. Alternatively, if you would like to call in I could give you a case number to cite in order for you to speak with one of our techs who can connect to your computer if need be (and if you're comfortable).

Hi Tommy,

Thanks for getting back so quick. BTW, it's much easier just to type "Event Viewer" in the Start Search box.

There are no errors listed anywhere on the 13th but there was some activity at that time. At 12:01 Windows Vista reports successfully creating a restore point so presumably it is all related to that. Hope this helps!

Here are the complete system application and activity logs for that period:

12:00:02 DCOM  started the service VSS with arguments "" in order to run the server:

12:00:03 The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the running state.

12:00:03 DCOM  started the service swprv with arguments "" in order to run the server:

12:00:04 The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the running state.

12:01:31 Successfully created restore point (Process = C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe /d srrstr.dll,ExecuteScheduledSPPCreation; Description = Scheduled Checkpoint).

12:01:31 Successfully created scheduled restore point.

12:01:53 The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the running state.

12:04:31 The VSS service is shutting down due to idle timeout.

I know, I know.Smile It isn't always as easy to give instructions involving using the start search box as not everyone knows how to use it. Anyway, I think at this point it would be best if you spoke with one of our tech support staff at your convenience. I'm going to send you an email with our phone number and a case number. indicate to reception you have a case number and you'll be directed to a level two support staff.
