Search result bug?

I'm doing a very basic Bible search in the NRSV.

So, I use search > Bible, and my guide says that I want to:

"Search All Bible Text in All Passages in The New Revised Standard Version for"

Jesus AND (teach* OR taught)

I get 67 results in 33 verses, BUT I am missing one I expected to find, namely Luke 10:25:

Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

The search did find Luke 7:40 which reads:

Jesus spoke up and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Teacher,” he replied, “speak.”

(John 1:38 is also found where it is a combination of Jesus and Teacher.)

Why does the search not find Luke 10:25?

Interesting. There appears to be an error in the NRSV in Luke 10:25. If you right click on Jesus it displays the selection as Jesus. not simply "Jesus" The punctuation is grouped with the word in error. I discovered this by searching for Teacher which found Luke 10:25 and the searching for Jesus. The latter did not return the verse.

Interesting indeed, because I do not have that error. I've checked both the NRSV and the NRSVCE, and neither has the dot hard-linked to the word. A search finds Lk 10:25 in both.

What version do you have? I've got

I am running L5 on Windows.

It certainly looks like it was introduced with the new L5 files. But it seems very weird to introduce an error like this. I have a superscripted 'j' right after the dot, with a popup saying 'Gk him'. Have they changed that in any way?

That is still there

In the NIV, for comparison, there is no "tagged dot" and the search in that version finds Luke 10:25

So it's all pointing to a tagging error in an update to the NRSV.

It looks like it is an NRSV issue. I should have thought to conduct the search in another English version. As Graham notes, the search works fine in the NIV, and I checked, and it is fine in the NET as well.

(BTW, you will get wildly different results for that search depending on the English version you use, mainly based on whether "Jesus" is identified in the sentence in order to clarify the Greek where only the 3rd person pronoun is used.)

True - and that is one of the things brought by the new clause search in that pronouns are included as well as the screenshot below shows:

You do, however, need to look at the different verbs for "teach" to get the complete set.

I believe this is going to be made easier in the future

I think this footnote is the key to the problem.

Compare UAX #29 Text Segmentation from Unicode 5.0 (http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr29/tr29-11.html) to Unicode 5.1 (http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr29/tr29-13.html) and you'll see that a new MidNumLet Word_Break property (containing U+002E FULL STOP) was added. This will cause the standard Unicode word-breaking algorithm to consider "Jesus.j" as one word.

We do generally override the standard word-breaking algorithm for our needs, but there may be a place in the software where the default algorithm is being used; we will investigate.

I know I am showing my ignorance here, but I don't understand what "the selection as Jesus, not simply "Jesus" means. They sound the same to me. What am I not understanding about the bug? By the way I don't get the result in Luke 25:10 either.

It's the difference between

Jesus

Jesus.

The Luke 12:10 example included the punctuation as part of the word which broke the search result for that verse.
