BUG: Rating applied to wrong resource

This has annoyed me for a very long time, and does so even more now that I've updated and have so much tagging to do.

  1. Open Library.
  2. Select a couple of resources for which you want the same tags but different ratings, e g the English and Latin versions of the same papal document.
  3. [Finish the tagging.]
  4. Go to the Ratings column and give the Latin edition 1 star.
  5. Give the English edition 5 stars.
  6. Surprise The Latin edition switches to 5 stars, and the English to 0.Surprise
  7. What's even more annoying is that as I generally filter by rating:0 when I tag, the incorrectly rated resources often disappear before I realize what's happened.

To apply the correct ratings one has to first deselect the 'combined' selection by clicking on something else; only then can one rate one resource at a time.

If rating one resource in the rating column gave all selected items the same rating, I would have assumed it was intentional, but this can't possibly be intentional.

Since resources that belong together don't necessarily appear together in Library, it would be very convenient to be able to rate them separately, after finishing tagging, but while they're still selected. Having to deselect them is not only an extra step, it also makes it considerably harder to find them again, especially when it's not a two volume apostolic constitution, but a twelve volume bundle spread out among 100-200 other books.

EDIT: After some more experimenting I have discovered that the 'principle' is slightly different to what I outlined above: it seems all ratings are transferred from the resource[s ] that were first clicked, to the resource that was last shift- or command-clicked.

    • Go to the Ratings column and give the Latin edition 1 star.
    • Give the English edition 5 stars.

In Library, I can only do this in Resource Info; where the tagging is also done. The Rating column is not editable.

To apply the correct ratings one has to first deselect the 'combined' selection by clicking on something else; only then can one rate one resource at a time.

This appears to be the crux of your issue but I don't have to click on something else (in Windows) i.e. just select the desired resource to undo the "combined" selection.

I believe the the bug revealed here is that the star rating should not be editable in the 'spreadsheet' view of the library on Mac. There is an active case for that bug.

I have added a link to this thread to the case.

Well.. yes, it seems to work that way on Windows, so in that respect I suppose that's the bug.

However, from my user perspective, it would be highly desirable that you made it work, instead of removing the option altogether. As I said in the OP:

This will be fixed in 5.1a Beta 3.
