Logos is a great thing. It would be even greater if it expanded its selection of books into areas that are more useful to Christian apologists. The Logos program lends itself very well to the way apologists need to study and find things, but currently Logos doesn't have an overall great selection of resources here. To do this it would need to add more books on philosophy of religion and plain old philosophy, in all of its fields (which includes political/economic theory (like how about History of Political Philosophy by Strauss and Cropsy?)).

It's all YOUR fault - you started it!!!  Stick out tongue

Seriously, the moment I saw Randy's post on day 1 I knew it was going to end this way.

Whoa there Pardner!!  How did you know it would end up "this way" when my original post was not at all about health insurance but ALL about the 12 Days of Logos?!?!?

Christian Sofussen:

M. Jones and others

LOL. why is socialism a bad thing? (And don't give me that soviet-union talk. I am very well aware of what was done there and I, as well as most others, know it was horrible, but that doesn't prevent me from being socialist).

besides that. Obama is not a socialist. In my eyes he is a liberal and if you're talking about his healthcare politics, it is definitely not socialist.

And this discussion about pricing should have been taken in a thread in suggestions not in the '12 Days of logos' discussion

Obama is obviously not a pure socialist, but he is being called a democratic socialist.

Hope you know I was kidding.

Right, it all boils down to how you define socialism. I agree with Arthur Balfour that socialism is the public ownership of the means of production and distribution. In that regards Obama favors socialism in many ways.

"And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common."

Nothing but semantics!!!

I'm not saying you intended this, but it is interesting to note that while there are plenty of people who see this as an example of biblical socialism, the means of production are still owned by the people. The government is non-existent. This is the furthest thing from socialism.

To borrow a phrase from a previous post, "Right, it all boils down to how you define socialism." Wink

I'd say that's obviously hyperbole. They didn't have wives in common, for example (although I believe some anabaptists tried this??).

Either way, even such a communal voluntary pooling is unsustainable on any large scale for very long. Some similar societies exist today (there were some called Jesus societies a while ago, I think). Take a look at them to see their condition.

They didn't have wives in common...

I also felt safe in reaching that conclusion, considering the source of the quote!!!

I think this thread gave me an ulcer. Does anyone know of a good country to go for treatment?

If I were wise I would stay out of this but you have me very puzzled and curious. In my mind, "means of production are still owned by the people" is a hallmark of socialism and socialism is primarily a matter of economics rather than political science. I also have puzzlement with the statement "government is non-existent" - in that given the context, doesn't history show that there was a government? Could you supply some definitions or describe more clearly what you mean? Thanks.

I can't speak for Jeremy, but I think he meant that the gov't was not the agency controlling the products (or their distribution). In that sense, the gov't was "non-existent" (in governing how the church produced or distributed their goods, at least not in any relevant sense).

By "owned by the people" I believe Jeremy meant privately rather than publicly. Of course some people (person) has to have ownership of those factors, the difference is in whether it is public (gov't) or private.
