Bug: Crashing when building PB
Compiled successfully on stable channel.
Came to Beta downloaded the files and tried to build.
Program crashes.
Having trouble uploading source files.

Somehow the file is corrupt. Deleting all content from the file and applying default formatting, it still crashes.
Here is the emptied file that still crashes:
Whereas a newly created blank document does not crash:
Somehow when the document was created or when the content was pasted in, something was corrupted...

As a workaround, save the file as an rtf file. Close out of the document. Open the new rtf file and save as a docx. Compile the new docx file.
Tested in Word 2013.

Good advice, especially for books which started out as PDF's.
Another thing you can try (after the .rtf trick) is to segregate out bits and pieces of the book. Cut the book in half and try to compile. If it works, try to compile the other half (hopefully it will fail). Then divide that half into quarters… through the process of elimination you might be able to determine the cause of the crashes.

The RTF and process of elimination ideas are very helpful workarounds with a specific source document that won't compile, but not when you have lots of documents for one book. I am having the same problem Lynden is having. A book I compiled successfully under 5.0 is failing with the 5.1 betas. The source documents (all originally DOCX, not PDF files) have not changed. The thought of diagnosing the dozens of DOCX files for this one PB is frustrating.
It seems like the 5.1 compiler has a problem that needs to be fixed. If the problem IS with the source documents (something the previous compiler ignored or didn't use) then we need some specific information about what to fix (and maybe a fix-it utility) to resolve the source document problem so we don't have to hunt through all (for me 100+) source documents for our PBs.

Have you created a bug report? Have you tried to compile on another installation (or do you just have one)?

I agree. [:S]

Hm. You say you have the same problem, but he EDITED: compiles and it crashes L5 beta, whereas you just tell about a compile fail. That rather sounds like two different things to me.
So - what is the error message? Where are the logs? How about the file(s)? We might be able to narrow this down. At least the Logos people would probably need it to run the compiler in a step-by-step / debug mode to see where exactly it stops. How should they give you detailed instructions for avoiding this error without knowing what it is that your PB compiler doesn't like.
Have joy in the Lord!

A part of my problem may be I have Microsoft word starter edition, and installed Open office afterwards. The document has open office as the default program rather than word.

Sorry for the delay - I read Lyndon's post and wanted to confirm the problem but did not have time to run a scenario and post files at that time.
DOCX files that I compiled successfully in 5.0 now crashes Logos when I try to compile them in 5.1b Beta 3. Files attached.

Just like Lynden's, this document crashes even with all of the content removed, incl header & footer.
What program was used to create both of these docs? What versions? Where they created by hand or was a lot stuff copied in to the file? If content was copied into the document, where was it copied from?
Opening, the docx archives, and comparing the emptied documents to a new blank doc shows a lot of differences, but I haven't tried to do a detailed comparison.

Overwritting the "word/styles.xml" file in Tim's original document with the one generated in a newly created blank docx file eliminates the crash and allows the file to compile and open successfully.

- I am using MS Word 2007 SP3
- Most content was created by hand with some content pasted with information copied from Logos notes (whatever beta version was active mid February 2012).

Interesting... I wonder if the new note engine is creating some problem. Could you try creating a new personal book with only the Logos notes to see if it crashes?

This will be fixed in 5.1 Beta 4.
