I spent the last two evenings clearing my shelves of print books that I've recently bought in Logos, and was pleasantly surprised to find a large stack of BoT's Geneva Commentaries on the "to sell" pile. Lots of people have asked for this series, but it seems that we have almost all the volumes already. It would definitely be worth completing this set, and collecting the volumes together in one marketing package (I know you couldn't call the set "Geneva Commentaries", but you could say that it included all/most of those commentaries).

This is definitely good news/bad news.

Good news is, some of the BoT commentaries I wanted are now available in Logos! Wow!

Bad news is, they are bundled in expensive sets (based on single books of the Bible) that I see little value in getting. For what is essentially public domain works, this is prohibitively expensive.

This is great! Thanks Mark!

Any chance we can get any of these bundles broken?...

And any chance we could get any of the ones not available...

Am I correct in assuming these lack series tag, like the Westminster Commentaries and The Churchman's Bible turned out to do? If so, I'll add them too to the Metadata page.

No, because they're not a proper series - they're just a group of books that a publisher re-published and created a series for. Originally they stood alone or were part of different series.

Nearly all those sets originally went for $20-$40 on Community Pricing, which was great value. Some went as low as $10.

Frankly, I often did not want to even look at those CP offerings, because of the bundling. I did not have the time or the inclination to sift the wheat from the chaff. Of course I'm now mildly regretting it.

I can only hope that Logos will one day sell the books exactly as they were written, i.e. separate books.

You forgotten James Durham on Song of Solomon. It's a Geneva Commentary.

Thanks. I've added it now. I've also added Thomas Manton's three volumes on Psalm 119.

Too bad there is no way for us to create a set filter and export it as file to share in the forum....

The volume on Proverbs by Charles Bridges is not the same as the Geneva volume- I have it in print and compared it- they are similar- but the Geneva volume is much more extensive in comments.

Having these books as a set would be great - would definitely buy it.

I'm new to Logos so missed all those community pricing deals and the prices are pretty high (even with academic discount) for a seminary student just wanting one or two books from each of the 'Classic' Commentary sets. And it doesn't give me anymore of a desire to splash out when I look up what Spurgeon had to say about some of the ones I haven't heard of and he questions why they were ever published in the first place!

Interesting.  Can you post a link to Spurgeon's reviews?  I respect his opinion and would love to see which ones he finds useless. (Like you, I haven't bought any of the collections, but might pick up singles here or there as needed.)

My thanks to the various MVPs. Without them Logos would have died early. They were the only real help available.

The books in the sets and volumes cited are not the same as the Geneva series- they are similar, but not the same commentaries. Just one example is the Bridge's volume on Proverbs- Geneva is much more extensive in comment. If you own Geneva in paper and compare them you will see that the commentaries in the classic series with Logos- are not the same.

Bottom line keep pursuing the Banner of Truth for access to this great series- we are missing some great wisdom regarding the Word of God in not having it.

Doc - the thing is, you can't get them as singles, have to buy the full set!

Couple of examples from Spurgeon on the psalms set:

"ALEXANDER (WILLIAM HENRY). The Book of Praises. The Psalms, with Notes. Sm. 8vo. Lond., Jackson, Walford & Hodder. 1867. S. 2/6. The Notes are mostly from other authors, and are selected with discretion. They do not appear to have been designed by their collector for use beyond his own family circle, and they were published after his death by his friends. We question the wisdom of the publication."

"CHAMPNEY (H. N., ESQ.) A Textual Commentary on the Psalms. Sq. 16mo. 3/' Lond., S. Bagster & Sons. 1852. S. 1/-Merely a collection of parallel texts. Make one for yourself."

"GEDDES (ALEXANDER, LL.D. A Raman Catholic divine. 1737— 1802). New Translation, with Various Readings and Notes. geo. Lond., 1807. 3/' This is said to be "a careful rendering, aiming at the primary meaning of the psalmists." Dr. Henderson speaks of Geddes as flagrantly disfiguring his Biblical labors with profanity. He was a singular mixture of Romanist and free-thinker."

Plus a couple of others which he says are no use to the preacher.

I created a spreadsheet with a summary of Spurgeon's comments, and an indication of whether the commentary is available in Logos. There's more detail here: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/71558.aspx

The info is in this volume: http://www.logos.com/product/6780/lectures-to-my-students-vol-4-commenting-and-commentaries

Some updates to Mark's list above:

E. J. Young on Daniel is now available - although only as part of an expensive set

David Dickson on Hebrews will be available when this Community Pricing set gets funded

David Dickson on Matthew will be available when this Community Pricing set gets funded

James Durham on Song of Solomon will be available when this Community Pricing set gets funded

So vote for the above CPs if you'd like to see almost all of the Geneva series on Logos!
