Smart Selection resources available for download
After some discussion, we have decided to provide the Smart Selection-enabled resources as a download for Beta users, rather than publish them directly at this time. These resources will eventually be published for all users. To utilize Smart Selection you must be using 5.2 Beta 1 (0008) or later. Instructions for updating to Beta 2 are here.
The resources can be acquired at the following link:
http://downloads.logos.com/LBS5/smart.selection.resources.zip
These include:
- The Bible Knowledge Commentary
- Easton's Bible Dictionary
- English Standard Version
- Connect the Testaments: A Daily Devotional
- Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
- The Lexham Bible Dictionary
- The Lexham English Bible
- Morning and Evening
- Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition)
To discover these resources, it is recommended that you unzip the file to your desktop and enter in the command box:
Mac:
scan /users/<your user name>/Desktop/smart.selection.resources/
Windows:
scan C:/Users/<your user name>/Desktop/smart.selection.resources/
These commands will need to be adjusted if you have a non-standard setup. After scanning, you will need to close and reopen Logos for the resources to be discovered. Once they are discovered you can delete the folder from your desktop.
If you wish to remove these resources for any reason, they can be deleted from your Data/<user>/ResourceManager/Resources folder. Run an 'update resources' command afterwards and you will re-download the original files, which will require a re-index. Alternatively, if you don't want to use Smart Selection, there is a toggle in Program Settings under the Text Display heading.

As a quick reference, Smart Selection progresses it's automatic selection by Word->Phrase->Sentence->Paragraph.
To explain how Smart Selection works, consider the example sentence "I am testing the new feature for the next version of Logos."
Selecting "new" will select "new" (reaching the end of a word will select the beginning of the word as well), selecting "new feature" will select both full words, and dragging into any other words will instantly select those whole words.
As soon as you select past "feature", it will begin selecting not by word, but by phrase. So if your normal selection was "testing the new feature for the", smart selection would extend your selection to be "the new feature for the next version", assuming the new feature and the next version are logical phrases in the text. Whenever you pass a word, phrase, sentence, or paragraph boundary, it begins selecting at that level (e.g. when you pass the end of a sentence, selection will extend to the beginning of the sentence you were previously selecting words in and select the one you just entered).
As for the Alt/Option commands, holding Alt/Option while click+dragging will use the old character-based selection, while Alt/Option & right clicking a word will select that logical "chunk". In our earlier example, Alt+Right click on "new" would select "the new feature". Normal Right click remains as it is currently.

I thought I was going to hate this (I turn off Smart Select in Word), but it's actually very well implemented, and I like it a lot - although I'm worried that having it work in some resources and not others will be confusing.
I do have one important caveat though. We need to be able to switch to standard select, without starting select again. For example, I may decide to select the a particular part of a resource, and then discover that SmartSelect won't allow that. It's annoying to have to deselect and start again, rather than just hold down alt during the select process.
There's also a potential bug - indexing didn't complete properly for me when I started Logos the first time. I had to restart to get indexing to complete. Here's my log:

Is there a reason why, at minimum, word-based Smart Selection can't be implemented without additional tagging? That way it could (partially) extended to all resources without updating them.

One query about smart selection: is it possible to select text in Lexham English Bible or ESV without selecting the verse numbers as well?

Worth noting that the download was 436MB.
Would need to take the size of this into account if it were expanded to a much wider set of resources.

Probably why it is an "optional" download now. [:O] [:)]

It may be smaller than that if it was an official download, as downloads are delta updates now, which means only the changed part of the file is downloaded.

That's a good thought to think!

Very basic question: I downloaded the package, and I properly pasted your scan command into the window. I've shut down and restarted Logos since then, and even restarted the laptop.
What was I supposed to see that indicated that it "took"?

I assume that Logos would have reindexed the updated resources, but I am not currently on beta. Did you try out the features as suggested in the OP?

I forgot to say that I'm on the beta that updated last night. It's newer than required, I believe.

If you choose one of the updated resources - and if you have got "Smart Text Selection" set to "Yes" in Program Settings then you should see the behaviour which Dylan describes above at http://community.logos.com/forums/p/76715/536938.aspx#536938
Are you seeing that?
What version of support info do you have - for example - for the ESV?

Correct - you need at least 5.2 beta 1

- I like it. Well done
- I could see this becoming annoying if not all resources were enabled. Inconsistency would be obnoxious Will all resources be enabled in the future
- I'm really glad for the alt-option feature. This should probably be explained in the "?" help popup in settings as a quick reference.
- Bug? Watch this video where I try to select Revelation 22:2-4 and it only will select Revelation 22:1-4. Why is this? http://screencast.com/t/oLCVfCM6h5F

It could be worth mentioning to remove the check mark for these resources from the mobile device Download to section (in Library). ioS and Android may not take kindly to the formatting!

I like the functionality after having BKC scanned. The question of "all resources" would have to extend to L3 (lbxlls) resources, of which I have 172; licenses permitting?

The resource files are not compressed in the zip and I doubt that a 'patch' could cover the extensive tagging e.g. JFB & BKC are 3.4 MB larger than the current versions. ESV is 3 MB larger and LEB is 2.2MB larger.

iOS and Android download resources directly from our servers, so they won't be affected by these files.

BKC does not seem to have a problem on my iPad (iOS7).See that Bradley posted while I was getting my iPad fired up. It did download an updated BKC however.
BTW: Like the Smart Selection feature.
