Crash: Loading layout in Beta 3
Crash on attempt to load layout on beta 3.
- Close all resources.
- Update to beta 3.
- download 2 free Vyrso resources
- Restart & index (last time I checked--about 15 minutes prior to icon in tool tray disappearing, indexer was 49% complete.
- Leave laptop while indexer is running
- Return 15 minutes later, indexer icon has disappeared from system tray. Complete? (I assumed it was.)
- Load layout to resume work
- Crash.
Logs dated 10/31 are attached (earlier logs omitted):
This crash is repeatable. Apparently, I'm going to have to rebuild my main sermon layout. [:'(]
There were several crashes in between (attempting to restart, find some place in the layout snapshots with an interim picture of the layout that WILL load...). Here are latest crash logs.
[:'(] I have 3 sermon layouts... an NT layout, an OT layout, & when serial associations became possible again in L4/L5, I combined them into a SRMN layout. All 3 produce the same crash. These are the ONLY layouts that produce a crash--my Bible study layouts (for different classes I teach) all still work. But all 3 of the sermon layouts cause Beta 3 to crash. Every time.
This is bad.

Rebuilt the layouts. On finishing rebuilding the last layout, I opened the 1st one of the 3 again, & crash. Now, it crashes every time I start Logos, unless I open to blank layout. I'm going to uninstall this beta & reinstall the last release. I can't run beta until this is fixed.

Hi Bill, sorry you're experiencing this crash, but hopefully we can figure out what is going on.
Firstly, I split this into its own thread so it can get proper attention.
Second, looking at your logs it seems like your issue might be similar to this thread: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/77058.aspx Could you try Bradley's workaround to disable the reverse interlinears? Also if you could tell us what resources you have loaded in your layouts, and if RVI is open in the ones that work, that would be helpful.

At this point, the last release is already installed. On 1st load, it opened layouts & gave me a preview but told me I didn't have a license to any of the resources. It's now downloading all 12.1 Gb of resources again. [:@] Logos REALLY needs a BETTER solution than that when the resources are already on the machine!!!!!!!! [:@][:@][:@][:@][:@]
I don't mind reindexing. But redownloading? [:@] That won't finish until tomorrow, & there will still be a couple hours of indexing afterward!! [:@] High speed internet services don't yet recognize north Idaho as being in the continental US & eligible for anything over 3.5Mbps.
Yes, I have a bunch of RI's in each layout that failed. But I also have RIs open in the layouts that still worked before I bailed out of beta.
In my opinion, the main difference between the layouts that failed & the layouts that work is number of resources (mid 20s resources for sermon layouts, mid teens on bible studies), & the inclusion of lexicons in the sermon layouts. I don't normally put those in my Bible study layouts (but open them as needed). In the sermon layouts, I include all the language lexicons (including AKOT & ANLEX) that I regularly use (BDB, HALOT, Genesius' Hebrew & Chaldee, BDAG, Liddell & Scott), as well as all the language texts (plus Lexham Greek-English interlinear in serial relationship to its Hebrew-English equivalent). Wish I could help more, but I can't see my resources yet & the layouts aren't fully functional until the download completes. This is as best I remember, with the help of the "previews" it'll let me have while it restores what's already on my machine.
[:@]
While I'm not a happy camper about redownloading all my files, I'd still choose Logos. Thanks for getting this one fixed.

Bill

Bill, just letting you know I've been able to verify that your error was the same as my earlier linked thread, and developers are already working on a fix for this. I've linked to this thread, so we'll let you know when it is fixed. Until then I am sorry your work has been delayed. [:(]

This point seems to have been overlooked.
Do you mean you just updated to the beta 3 "at this point", because I'm wondering about the "1st load"? Were all resources in the layout given a preview with a "no license" message?

No, Dave. I dropped back to the last production release. Help About says it's 5.1b SR-3 (5.1.2.0092).
I was on beta 2 & had no problems with any of my layouts as late as yesterday morning. Install beta 3 & bam.... When there wasn't an immediate response, I chose the fastest seeming way to restore productivity.
Blessings, & thanks for the response!

The problem with reverting to a version (v5.1) that is older than the beta (v5.2) is that the databases may not be compatible and you have a crash! That, basically, is why Logos remove the Data folder** and your resources when uninstalling. Also, the resources may not be compatible e.g. the resources Logos gave us to test the "Smart Selection" feature.
However, I believe there is a case for leaving the Resource folder by itself and allowing the Setup program to scan that folder for resources and only download those that are found to be incompatible. So you just have to allow an extra 10 - 30 GB on the HDD/SSD! I also advocate this course when users have a drive/folder with resources from another installation.
** this also resolves an installation with corrupt databases.

As I read it, it was up to us to download those. I didn't.....

Agreed there's a case, but I do not agree that users should have to do this manually in a hidden directory. If Logos chooses to make the resource folder visible & put it in My Documents? I could see the end user being responsible. If Logos keeps it hidden it as now? No way should an end user have to be responsible for manually making that kind of change, no matter how good the procedure you've written up for us.
15 min shy of 6hr later: 46% complete on downloading 12.91Gb. Grrrrrr.....

Manually? I said "allowing the Setup program to scan that folder for resources"; meaning that it knows where they are placed after an uninstall. Setup could also scan a folder/drive "when users have a drive/folder with resources from another installation"; but Setup would have to be told the location.
So the Setup program would have options for fully downloading or loading from HDD/SSD.

If you're talking about how it SHOULD be--I agree... thought you were talking about how it works now (user does, using your procedures).
Thanks again, Dave. Many blessings to you!

~11hr to download--finished by 5am (sleepless night; I was up)
But there was no escaping 5.2 B3. I didn't notice that installing the production release did NOT change the update channel. So when the download finished, L5 had noticed that there was another update ready & had downloaded it. Last time that happened, it required a registry edit. to get rid of the reminder so L5 would finish booting up without installing. This time, it had not indexed. [:(]
I didn't want to try to remember how to do that registry edit. Just wanted to be able to search, which means getting indexed. <sigh> so I allowed B3 to install again. [:'(] Started indexing at 5am & 7hr later it's at 96%.
Guess I'll limp on blank layouts for sermons until B4 fixes the layout problem.

After all that work, I've come full circle: I'm back on beta, the problem is back, & I'm reduced to working from a blank layout rather than my sermon layouts. But I'm working... So I'm determined not to go around the circle again.
At this point my only hope of normalcy is a fix, which means a download, so... I'm going to respectfully decline your invitation.

Anyone,
As of this morning, L5's behavior is deteriorating. Most of my layouts (all but one that I've tested so far) cause a crash. Because I NEED some of those layouts for Bible studies next week, I can't go into the week with this beta installed. Is there a safe way to drop back to the production release that doesn't involve re-downloading & re-indexing? I haven't downloaded the beta formatted books.
Unless I hear from someone in the next couple of hours, I'm going to try the least invasive of Dave Hooton's methods.
Thanks for any wisdom

Have you tried my instructions to turn off the Reverse Interlinear ribbon in the NIV? It's a pretty simple workaround: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/77058/539201.aspx#539201

The NLT could also cause this crash, because it's also NT-only. The exact Bibles you'll need to apply the workaround too will depend on which Bibles you actually use with the RI ribbon.

Maybe I'll try HIDING the NIV84 & see if that'll enable my layouts to open.

Before "Hiding" NIV84, I tried opening it to Romans instead of Acts. That works, but even if I sync before opening a layout, it correctly remembers whether the layout had the interlinear ribbon open & opens the same way. So my main sermon layout & Old Testament layout still won't work (I use the NRSV & NASB95 to get to the Hebrew in those layouts, even if I'm still working from NIV84 text).
But this is enough to get me out of the woods for next week, as all next week's bible studies are on the NT. :-)
Thanks, Bradley!

That's good to hear. Sorry for the trouble you've been having with this update; the next beta (that fixes this problem) should be out early next week.

Just to chime in here, I'm getting the same thing error. This even happened when not in an OT passage switching between several versions until I got to the NLT (in 1Tim 2:1,ff).
