How to Edit a Single Tag?
Hi,
I am running Logos 5.2a RC2.
I really appreciate and love all the new Group Edit and Delete Tags capability, Thank you.
- Rename Tag on ALL Resources
- Delete ALL Tags
However, if I just want to rename One Tag of One Resource, how can I do that? As I was not on Beta until RC1 ... I might have missed something very obvious. However, if indeed it is a missing function, Can we add to the right mouse click context menu:
- Rename Tag
Or allow us to edit the Tag the old way; I got so used to the old way of tagging and renaming tag after so many hours of tagging over the last two years. My current work around is to delete the Tag by clicking on "x" after the tag and re-tag it in 2 steps

I don't believe there is any way to do this at the moment - and agree it would be a useful function to have

I think that's the best you can do at the moment.

You can edit the tag on the very right by putting the cursor after the tag and clicking backspace/delete. But you can't edit a tag like this if it's one of the first tags or in the middle [:(]
I will make a case to add "Rename Tag" to the right click context menu so that renaming one tag of one resource will be possible.

Pressing "Escape" after doing some editing to this last tag does not cancel whatever editing you'd done, and it should. If I accidentally backspace over the last character of a tag and then press Escape, the tag gets deleted. This should not happen.

Please make that "Change Tag", otherwise it leads to confusion.
Conceptually, the tag called "XYZ" exists somewhere in the universe and is describing something (e.g. the however defined group of all critical commentaries on the NT). It is only assigned to a resource. If I rename it "on all resources" that's the same as just renaming it: I decide to call that same tag now "ABC" - or "CritComNT" - which of course doesn't change 'itself'.
If I change a tag on one resource, I don't rename it, I assign another tag to that resource - e.g. "DevotionalComNT". The difference will become more clear if you keep in mind the continued existence of the concept called "CritComNT" (which may be assigned to other resources).

I think that renaming a tag (which would affect it on all resources it's assigned to) should be possible in this context and should be on the right-click menu. Editing the tag (which is what we used to be able to do) to change it to a different, possibly new tag, should also be possible, but I think is less common. I think it makes sense to have to delete the tag and assign a different one to accomplish the latter. If the continued existence of the concept called "CritComNT" is understood, then editing it in place and changing it to DevotionalComNT in this context would be very confusing. It might make me think I'm changing the name of the tag. If I accidentally had assigned CritComNT to a resource and realized later it should be DevotionalComNT, I would expect to have to delete the former and add the latter, even though the names of the two tags are coincidentally similar and I could save myself some typing if I could just change Crit to Devotional. Every other system I know that uses tags with boxes around them and x's on them (e.g., Delicious, Letterboxd) does not let you edit the text of the tag in situ. You have to delete and type it in again.

Angela, please read my (admittedly too long) reply above as to why I don't think this is a good idea, but will rather add confusion.

[Y] That was on my long mental list of things to post about.

Personally I find that worse than Rename. How about Edit Tag and Edit Tag In All Resources? Most of the time, I don't want to 'change' or 'rename' tags, I simply want to fix a typo. Edit seems to cover everything.

To the contrary, I would think it's ten times more common. Or do you never make typos? I know I do.

How? If the right-click menu includes both a Rename/Edit Tag and a Rename/Edit Tag In All Resources, isn't that clear enough? (And if not, how about making the former Rename/Edit Tag In This Resource?)
What I find confusing is that clicking on a tag filters the library. As a Mac user I expect that to make the tag editable. I would have preferred one click for editing and a double-click to filter the library. But I can live with that.
What I really found confusing, though, was when I first found a tag with a typo in it, selected all the resources with that tag, right-clicked to edit, found no such option, and later realized that the way to do it was not to select all resources you wanted to change, but to select just one. That's kind of counterintuitive...
Logos, are you planning to redesign the multi-select tagging panel as well? It needs to be done. In this case the tag was a typo, so, once I figured it out, I could correct it for all resources at once -- but what if I have 320 resources with one tag and want to change 97 of them to a new tag? That needs to be possible.

Yes, I make them all the time, but with tags as they work now in 5.2a, if I make a typo it's most likely to be only on the first instance of that tag, so if I edit it, it means in essence I want to rename that tag. Now that the tag editor shows you existing tag names matching the first few letters you've typed, typos on assigning existing tag names to a new resource will be much less frequent. I used to do it all the time before (e.g., I couldn't remember if I'd spelled my existing tag "Art" or "Arts", so there's be inconsistency throughout my library), which is why I wanted an easy way to edit a single tag that was assigned to several books.

re typo correction: if a tag is misspelled (or spelled inconsistently) on one or some books, renaming it to the consistent spelling is really a "renaming". And the feature "rename in all resources" is fine for that, and nearly properly named. Changing one tag for a certain resource, i.e. assigning a different tag (that may or may not be used elsewhere) is something different.

I'd still like a way to "rename in selected resources" or "replace in selected resources"; For example, if I've realized that I mistagged a bunch of my OT resources (but not all of them) as NTStudies, I might want to select a bunch of them and change that tag in them to OTStudies, but not rename the entire NTStudies tag as OTStudies throughout my library.

I've come across what seems to be a variation of this.
I started entering a new tag and then decided I didn't want it so pressed the backspace button a few times to delete it. If I press the backspace too many times then focus moves to the previous tag on the resource and characters in that start being deleted.

I'd still like an answer to this:

I didn't expect an estimate, but I was hoping you'd tell me if it was planned for the next beta cycle, or if you intend to give up on Library for now and move on to something else. But I'm glad there's at least a case for it.[:)]

I think an estimate would good.
Since some of us are dead in the water, in between the nutty design and the hare-brained 'back to the top' every time that you make more than a couple changes.
I ordered myself to not update Logos and stupid me, ignored my orders. So being a rabbit, I'm certainly to blame.
I imagine someone wearing a rabbit-suit and breaking into Logos HQ armed with a stylus ... 'use tags, you coders!' (or designers).

This should be fixed in 5.2b Beta 1.
