I'm trying to make a collection of all of the systematic, biblical and other compendiums of theology in my library. But every time I search just a little differently I find more titles. Plus I'm getting a lot of titles I need to exclude. Title:"Biblical Theology" for instance turned up a title about how theologians are folk artists.

Thanks in advance.

Found a rule in example collections, but its producing a lot of histories of theology.

(title:”systematic theology” OR title:dogmatic OR (subject:theology AND subject:doctrinal)) AND type:monograph ANDNOT (title:sermon)

Tweaking it to: (title:”systematic theology” OR title:dogmatic OR (subject:theology AND subject:doctrinal)) AND type:monograph ANDNOT (title:sermon,History)

I know that this is not perfect but this is what I currently use for systematic theology -

title:"systematic theology" OR title:"christian theology" OR title:"dogmatic*" OR title:"foundations of pentecostal theology" OR title:"basic theology" OR (title:"biblical theology of the" AND author:zuck) OR title:”topical analysis”

That seems like its going to miss R.A. Torreys Fundamentals, and Calvin's Institutes, should they be in your library. Let me see what comes of it, maybe it will pick up some things my current rule doesn't.

Of course those can be manually added but I'm interested to see what rules others have that may be better.

I use several different collections for the above very reason. Some pick up more than others, some less.  Some are focused on a particular type of theology (reformed) to which I adhere.  I can usually find one that works pretty well for my purpose. [NB: none of these are original with me...I've obtained them all with help from others. I may have tweaked a few, though, for better or for worse.]

Biblical Theology- (title:(Biblical, “Old Testament”, “New Testament”) AND title:theology) OR (subject:(“bible. o.t.—theology”, “bible. n.t.—theology”, “bible.—o.t.—theology”, “bible.—n.t.—theology”))

Creeds/Confessions- title:(creed,confession,Nicaea,catechism,"cambridge declaration") OR subject:creed

Systematic Theology- title:"systematic theology" OR title:dogmatic OR subject:"Theology, Doctrinal." OR subject:"Theology--Doctrinal."

Reformed Systematic Theology- subject:(reformed, presbyterian, calvinism) AND subject:"theology, doctrinal"

(etc., etc.)

My thanks to the various MVPs. Without them Logos would have died early. They were the only real help available.

For systematic theology I use: title:"dogmatic theology" OR title:"systematic theology" OR (author:calvin AND title:institutes) OR title:"reformed dogmatics" which seems to work fairly well. I normally use subjects when creating collections, but that works badly for systematic theologies - presumably because there isn't a LCSH that matches.

For biblical theology I use: title:"biblical theology" OR subject:("bible. o.t.--theology", "bible. n.t.--theology", "bible.--o.t.--theology", "bible.--n.t.--theology") OR (title:theology AND title:(Bible, "Old Testament", "New Testament"))

So I fused most everyones suggestions together and formed this:

Type:Monograph AND ((Title:"Systematic","Dogmatic",Christian,"Foundations of Pentecostal",Basic,Biblical) AND (Title:Theology)) OR (Title:"topical analysis","The Fundamentals: A Testimony to the Truth") OR (Title:"biblical theology of the" AND author:zuck) OR (subject:Doctrinal AND Subject: Theological) OR (subject:"Theology--Doctrinal.") OR (title:"biblical theology" OR (subject:("bible. o.t.--theology", "bible. n.t.--theology", "bible.--o.t.--theology", "bible.--n.t.--theology")) OR (title:theology AND title:(Bible, "Old Testament", "New Testament"))) ANDNOT (Title:magazine,sermon,History OR Subject:"Sermons-Outlines" OR Subject:Theologians)

However it included no resources. Thinking about making a series of collections, then a meta-collection that includes (and excludes) the various parts of the collection.

Yeah.  Systematic theologies seem to be hard to classify.  But title matches fail too, so I just tag the books I consider to be systematic theologies, and use that tag to define the collection, otherwise you'll miss books with titles like these:

  • Basic Theology (Ryrie)
  • Outlines of Theology (Hodge)
  • Christian Dogmatics (Mueller)
  • The Christian Faith: A Lutheran Exposition (Kolb)
  • A Compendium of Christian Theology (Pope)
  • Foundations of Pentecostal Theology (Duffield)
  • Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma (Ott)
  • Christian Theology (Erickson)
  • Foundations of the Christian Faith (Boice)

Agreed, but I prefer only to tag the resources that don't automatically make it into my collection.

abondservant, below are pictures of mine since I don't believe Logos has an easy way to print off a list of specifically tagged resources. I think this is still a uservoice request. At this time I have 154 resources tagged as "Systematic Theology".

You can create a collection from the tags, and print the collection.

Bruce clearly has a broader definition of "systematic" than I do (in addition to having a larger library).  I tend to exclude books that are excessively concise (like Packer's Concise Theology), excessively discursive (like Berkower's Studies in Dogmatics), or discuss only a few topics (not systematic enough).

You might be able to make a bibliography with them - those are fairly easily exported as a .docx

Though for my purposes the picture will work just fine. Thanks much!!

That would have been easier. I didn't think about that.

It would seem that way. I actually tag all of my books so I read the overview of each and make a decision the best way to categorize them. I also have sub tags to limit searches when needed.
