There's some overlap between this series and Early Church Fathers but there's lots of material unique to this series. I'd love to have it for Cassian's The Conferences alone, but lots of the other volumes look like I'd want them.

This would be a wonderful series to have available. While some material overlaps that in the ANF and NPNF this is a newer series with more recent scholarship.

    YES!!!

Eisenbrauns currently has the print editions of these on sale for $23.20 each (10 vols).  The publisher listed by Eisenbrauns is Intervarsity.  This is not a cheap set, and Eisenbrauns does not list all of the volumes.  Note that volume 1 of the Ancient Christian Commentary published by Tyndale (a different set ?) is offered by Logos for $379.95 and covers more of the canon than is listed by Eisenbrauns.  http://www.logos.com/products/details/2439

This is a different set. The Ancient Christian Writers series is the Catholic contemporary translation series to replace the 37 volume Ante-Nicene Church Fathers et. al. series.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Ah, yes, you are correct.  Sometimes the titles of these get a bit too close to one another so that care is necessary.

So true. Another possibility for contemporary traslations of Early Church Fathers would be those from St. Vladimir Press (St. Vladimir Seminary). Because they are such a small press, exposure via Logos might be of great value to them so they might be easy to work a deal out with.

I'd rather see Patrologia get going...personally...

  • Member Posts: 447 ✭✭

...though I suppose I should clarify that I'd be interested in any sort of Patristic texts at all! Including these translations.

    Yes and amen!  Great series.

Someone was just asking about whether Logos has St. Augustine's On Faith and Works, and I had to say alas no (*). Please work on getting this series!

(*) My post won't show up until a moderator approves it, as I included some links to where he could find it in Latin, etc.

St. Augustine: The Problem of Free Choice looks like a good read.[;)]

Looks like a very good and important series to get into Logos. I would be among the first to purchase.

    Can't believe I haven't already [Y]'d this.

Would love to see this series in Logos! That and the Fathers of the Church series too!

  • Member Posts: 26,194 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Bumping this again.

    The series is now up to 66 volumes;

    63. Julian of Toledo: Prognosticum futuri saeculi (Foreknowledge of the world to come)
    64. Irenaeus of Lyons: Against the Heresies (Book 3)
    65. Irenaeus of Lyons: Against the Heresies (Book 2)
    66. Jerome: Commentary on Ecclesiastes

And I came across a reference to Prosper of Aquitaine, Call of All Nations, in Thomas Oden's Systematic Theology v. 3.; which of course is not available in Logos so I can't go look at the source. [:(]

    C'mon, Logos. Please!

Several of the ACW volumes are already available in Kindle.

Paulist may be the last major American Catholic publisher they haven't gotten onboard yet, so hopefully they're working on it.

Though my bank account would probably prefer if they worked slower rather than faster. Paulist doesn't only publish the Ancient Christian Writers series, they also publish the even larger Classics of Western Spirituality series...

    That collection looks excellent!

So what is in this series that is not in ANF/NPNF?

  • Member Posts: 5,336 ✭✭✭

This first English translation of St. Jerome’s Commentary on Ecclesiastesincludes a discussion by the translators that elucidates the difficulties of Jerome’s text, but also presents an original view of Jerome’s hermeneutical approach to the theological issues raised by this challenging book of the Bible.

Is one that I would love... and these are new translations.

Does this have a lot of book overlap, content wise, with Nicene and Ante Nicene Fathers we have now, or the Patristics Series Logos sold? I see books that look very much like what I have already with Tertullian, Cyprian, Irenaeus, etc.

  • Member Posts: 5,336 ✭✭✭

There will be overlap... I can not say how much there is, the translations are new (how different I am not sure). Is it worth it, I am not sure there are definitely some new works in there that I am excited about.
