Is it just me?

I was typing my Notes today & I noticed the spell-check feature has stopped working. I tried typing random words, closing & reopening the software. And still no spell-check.

Bug?

Mike, are you on Mac or Windows?

I am not able to reproduce this issue. One thing to be aware of and check for is that you the language set on the text is English or Spanish (we currently only ship dictionaries for those languages). Even if the words you are typing are English but the language is set to something else (like Greek or Hebrew), the spell checker will not run on that text.

Perhaps with more information, I or one of our very helpful MVP users on the forums will be able to help.

You ship dictionaries? You don't use those already installed in the OS?

I'm on Windows 8.1 and yes, my language is always set on English.

I didn't know this but am not surprised given how many false errors the MS dictionary gives me on Biblical terms.

We use a spell-checking library called Hunspell (same technology used in OpenOffice). It has its own data format for dictionaries.

Windows does not have a built-in dictionary like Mac does so we utilize this cross-platform solution. We bundle in the standard Hunspell dictionary for en-us and es-mx as well as some custom dictionaries for terms and abbreviations within the domain of Biblical Studies (both in English and Spanish).

We hope to offer support for even more languages over time.

Good thing I don't feel that much need for spell-checking, because you just made it fairly clear that I won't be able to use yours. Not only does it not have Swedish, Greek, or Hebrew, it doesn't even have British English. And from what I've read earlier, that language button doesn't seem designed for people like me anyway.

I'll be extremely surprised if Logos can find a Swedish dictionary that can handle even the simplest of biblical and theological terms. I doubt there is one. And on top of that, Swedish is a language that can easily combine two old words into a new one on the fly. I have spent years, if not decades, teaching my Mac the vocabulary I need, and I'm not done yet. Starting anew with a dotted line under every tenth word is far more of an annoyance than a help. I suspect I'll turn that spell-checker off and keep it off.

It is too dangerous typing without spell-check.. :)

Anyway, is it just me then? What more information I need to give?

Can you list the steps (in detail) that you are performing, preferably starting from a blank layout?

Also, could you try following these steps and report back whether the issue is still occurring or not:

1. Launch Logos to a blank layout (hold Cmd when launching the app and sign in).

2. Create a new Notes document from the Documents menu.

3. Click "Add Note".

4. Click in the "Content" box.

5. Enter the text "Thsi is a test noet. " (the first and last words should be underlined as misspelled).

Hi Chris,

When I first upgraded to Logos 6 the spellchecker was working, but now I am experiencing the same problem.

I am using Logos 6.1.0.0016 on Windows 8.1.

I followed your instructions and this is the result:

As you can see I checked that the spellchecker was activated in the program settings. I also tried changing the setting to "no", restarting Logos, setting it back to "yes", restarting, with no change in the result.

Please let me know if you need any more debugging done.

Thanks,

Michael

P.S. Sorry for the poor quality of the screenshot. I can't seem to insert it into the post at its original resolution?

Make sure the language set on the text is US English. We currently don't ship spell check dictionaries for other English dialects.

Thanks Alan, that appears to be the problem. It is defaulting to British English (en-gb).

Is there a way of changing it to US English by default? At the moment the only way I appear to be able to change it is by selecting all the text in a note and selecting the option shown in your screenshot.

TL;DR - Not in current version of Logos, but in one coming soon.

If you are in a note document but don't have a note selected, notice that you are still able to change the font family and size and to toggle bold italic, etc.  These set default values for new notes.

There is a current bug where it is impossible to change the language when no note is selected, and therefore it is impossible to specify a default language.  Rather, it will always default to your system UI language.  A fix for this bug has been submitted and will be shipping soon (likely in 6.2).

I am experiencing the same problem. Spell-check was working fine for me until one of the latest updates. :-(

Please provide more details - I've just checked on my system (running 6-1 SR1 on Windows 8.1) and it works fine.

What versions of the software are you using and on which platform?

Do you have a problem in all notes or just some / new ones or old ones?

My version is Verbum 6.1 SR-1 6.1.0.0024 on Windows 8.1. It recognizes abbreviated Bible verse links as mispellings but will not recognize misspelled words in regular text.

Thanks.

If you select the text for which misspellings are not recognized, what language is checked in the language drop down (if any)?

Brian, I am from the U.K. and the language is set to British English. When I change to American English, spell-check works. Is there a way to make American English my default?

Yes, a recent bug fix added the ability to select a default spell check language, similar to how you are able to select a default setting for bold, italic, etc.  I believe I stated earlier that this fix will be shipping with 6.2 - allow me to correct that: it will most likely be shipping with 6.3.
