So I don't know if I am putting this in the right forum but here it goes.

iPhone users, do you like your text to speech?  Then DO NOT UPDATE your logos app in the app store.

A reputable source, who loves Logos by the way but builds apps for a living, warned me that if I update this app it will completely BREAK the voice over.  YOu will no longer be able to use text to speech.

He said Logos added a new feature where you can scroll the text instead of paging it but it doesn’t matter if you have it turned on or not, it will break the VoiceOver support completely.  Logos, please fix this.  I love to use text to speech and use it quite frequently to listen to scripture, books, commentaries, etc.  If this new update breaks that, then I will not be updating.  Just a word of warning to those who like me love using text to speech in the iPHone.

Blessings...

I think this may need to be moved to the General section.

This also applies to Vyrso as well...

It got moved to the iPhone/iPad apps forum (which is the best place).

I wish I would have seen this before my iPhone automatically updated the app. Any chance of fixing this, or was this intentional?

VoiceOver integration has never been supported and we've been pretty clear about it (please see https://community.logos.com/forums/p/83846/609458.aspx#609458 ).

I will still create an inquiry case for the dev team about this. The fact that VoiceOver previously worked but doesn't now was *not* intentional.

I never knew voice over has never been supported.  I have noticed how it sometimes skips pages as I am reading.  My question is why will they not build the app to support it?

Logos, can update the app to fully support voice over?  I believe there are far more than me out there that use this function in the iPhone.

Blessings...

I don't know if Kevin/faithlife will answer, but I'll take a stab at it. The reason very well may be licensing agreements with publishers. Not all books are available for read aloud. This is been a sticky issue for Zondervan, for example.

thank you.  and thanks to the OP for alerting to this.  I have never used Voice Over, somehow missing that it was possible, only knowing about the reading option on a laptop/PC.  I'd like to use VoiceOver on my long days on the road.

Exactly. Yes

That is one of my reasons I want to change iPad for Windows platform tablet. I use voice over reading very often and I miss it on iPad, especially when I am on the road.

I agree with this post. I just discovered it today when I updated the app on my ipad and then realized that I cannot use the text to speech accessibility anymore for Logos. I have trouble seeing and am going to get surgery for it soon but it has helped me so much to hear the text when my eyes are too tired to see. This is a real problem.

If you normally sync/backup your iPhone or iPad through iTunes, there is a way to downgrade the app to the previous version:

Anyone who would like to have free AudioBook support added/re-added in Logos with custom audio speeds through the built-in iOS feature VoiceOver, please cast your vote on this UserVoice Suggestion! I just posted it and shared with my classmates who I know also want this and already we have over 40 votes! Let's keep the votes coming! Also see the thread I started about this that outlines how Logos really should support this. Kindle does it, many other apps do it, etc.

Actually iPad does do voice over on Logos, atleast it used to do it until this latest app update.

Everyone, please help out by voting on what Tim said above.  Hopefully Logos will go back and fix this on the app.  I'm a little unclear still as to why voice over is a problem for licensing?  Is it that people may possibly hear the book being read?  Like a song being played on the radio needs royalties to be paid?  I don't know, unclear why.

I use VoiceOver ALL THE TIME! Please bring this feature back! It's so helpful! I agree with everyone above that this is a very important feature.

Most people don't realize that a tool like voiceover, when set to max speed, effectively replaces subvocalization when speed-reading along. This means that there's little-to-no decrease in reading comprehension compared with regular speed reading. I use it frequently and am disappointed to see support lost in the latest update.

Of course, being able to multitask and just listen to my books being read to me is another huge benefit as others have indicated. Hopefully this feature will be reinstated.

Now that faithlife has started to introduce audio books it would make sense that they might want to restrict this unintentional feature. It was not a feature I ever used, I hope you can get it back but like i said restoring this feature may conflict with Faithlife's business model.

Good thoughts, Dan. I was actually thinking about that too, but then it still doesn't make sense. I mean, I know that from a business model perspective, Logos loves to charge it's customers as much money as they can lol, but personally I think that the respectable thing to do would be to give Logos users a choice. The official audio books are still going to be a hit because they will sound better quality etc. The VoiceOver voice is more useful for speed reading and the voice is not the smoothest.

I think the best example for Logos on this is to look at what Amazon did with Kindle books. I really hope that Logos will follow their example. Amazon has their official audio books, they created a whole market of audio books that complement their Kindle books nicely (see http://www.audible.com/) while they still allow you to use VoiceOver (see the links I posted on my other topic on this issue). This is the best of both worlds because it lets the user make the decision on what works best for them. VoiceOver isn't going to be the text-to-speech option of choice for everyone. For many they will prefer the more official AudioBook route, but for many others they will prefer VoiceOver. Why limit us if you don't have to?

Let's hope that their current user base is also important to them, rather than solely making a profit.

As Tim pointed out, there is certainly room for both being available. VoiceOver can actually make more sense (in certain circumstances) than hosting more content (audio files) either online or downloaded on our mobile devices.

I suspect it is improbable they would be able to mass-release audiobooks for all of their content in a rapid fashion any time soon anyway.

Thank you Integ and Rev. 14:6,

I use this feature occasionally and therefore support its reapplication. I also have voted for this feature in User Voice. I haven't tried the work-around yet, but I hope it saves the feature until development responds to the wishes of its user base.

Meanwhile, Jesus kept on growing wiser and more mature, and in favor with God and his fellow man.
