• Re: Best translations of Erasmus, Calvin, and Luther

The edition of Calvin's Institutes by Ford Lewis Battles is generally considered to be the best in terms of translation and annotation. You can get it here, https://www.logos.com/product/16036/institutes-of-the-christian-religion or perhaps it would be worth buying Reformed Starter, depending on your dynamic pricing. Colin.

Hi Glenn, Thanks for taking time to give such a detailed reply. I really appreciate the way you do that on the forums. I'm happy for you to rename the thread if that is possible, and I see how your title would also have got your attention which is part of what I was trying to do. I'll read your post more carefully later and perhaps ask a follow-up question

Thanks for checking that Yasmin. You mentioned my title earlier . I did consider carefully before writing the 'massive' word but did it in the end because: 1) the difference between what the website reported and what I could calculate for the figure was so vast - about $2500 2) I hoped it might attract the attention of a Faithlife emoployee like Glenn
the figures are definitely screwy and inflated. A resource that is not included is of no value to me and its cost should not be included in the overall figure.
This is my worry. The reason this was worth posting about is not just because it points to some kind of coding glitch but because it seems to have implications

Good point about the title! I just wanted to be specific - so many people come on and use a title like 'Help me! ' something. Anyhow, I saw Mark Barnes posting on an earlier thread about the pasting into a spreadsheet approach but it seemed too much like hard work! I thought it would be sorted by now. Unfortunately it's not just the bigger libraries

Hi DAL, There are times when the opinions you express on these forums is less than constructive but this is surely a destructive and damaging opinion that says more I think about you than it does about pastors and missionaries. There are sadly those I'm sure who resemble the picture you have painted but James 3:1 is enough to say about them. All of

If you take time to read MJ's other contributions to the plagiarism threads you'll see that MJ is certainly not basing her opinion on this episode. She is simply using

  • Problem with Topic Guide - anger/danger

I'm finishing off for a sermon tomorrow on David and Nabal and decided to have a quick look under the topic of 'anger'. For some reason, the topic guide links the topic of anger with 'destruction, displeasure and wrath'. The 2nd and 3rd are obviously linked to anger but the idea of destruction surely belongs in a separate topic. Lots of sermons were

Hi Dal, You must be unaware of the 5 reformation solas: they are not contradictory or redundant but complementary. Sola Fide , by faith alone. Sola Scriptura , by Scripture alone. Solus Christus , through Christ alone. Sola Gratia , by grace alone. Soli Deo Gloria , glory to God alone. I am aware that English is a 2nd language to you but I wanted to

The Piper videos you mention were initially available with Logos Now on a temporary basis. But then they became 'Free Book of the Month' so most folk probably downloaded them at that stage and got a permanent license. Colin

  • Re: Martin Luther - which works do I want?

Hi David, It is part of the standard volume of Luther's works in English (beginning at p. 428 as can be seen from the title page). LW 54 itself has 516 pages and consists of a selection from over 7,000 conversations in the German edition. In my opinion, Table Talk can be entertaining but it is not one of the more representative and authoritative parts

Hi SineNomine, I think Mark's suggestion is an excellent one. Though I suspect for your purposes that primary works (without editorial comments coming from an evangelical protestant perspective) may be more useful. In any case, here are the primary works of Luther in these 2 volumes. Each one has a separate editorial introduction. Volume 1. Disputation

Indeed. I suspect that Wikipedia may be the reason for this. Rather than reproducing the ḥ, Wikipedia incorrectly uses a simple h. That is the transliteration of an entirely separate Hebrew letter. Colin.

Hi Denise, I'm glad I said 'most' You seem to be a very competent Hebraist so unlike many of us, you probably don't need the vowels to make sense of the text. But I like your thought - surely the range can be extended more generally and an option there to decrease the size in the MR window if desired. Colin.

I am amused though at the anachronistic shortening of Alexander McCaul's name to Alex! Kimchi should probably be listed as author since McCaul is a translator and editor. Colin.
