  • Hebrew grammar style in Genesis

I read that there are distinct grammar styles in Hebrew for literalism and allegory. It's been said that the entire book of Genesis was written in a literal Hebrew grammar style, therefore this is a strong argument against an allegorical interpretation of the Genesis account of creation. Anyone care to confirm or deny? Thanks!

Thanks KS4J. I want to learn how to do syntax searches in Logos. 1) Should I wait for 4.5b or is 4.5a stable enough to give it a go? 2) Any links and/or videos to get me started? As always, thanks for your help!!

  • Re: Confused by the lemma of Elohim

Thanks George for your patience. I believe that a light bulb just went off. Let me make sure my thinking is correct: 1) Is it ok to use singular vs plural distinction instead of plural of majesty vs real plural distinction? 2) Is it correct to say that the morphology of the KJV interlinear is inflecting Elohim to indicate singular vs. plural use but

  • Re: Confused by the lemma of Elohim

Thanks for the responses. I must admit that I am still confused as to what is taking place. I'm trying to determine how may times Elohim occurs in the Old Testament. If I click on Hebrew Elohim in KJV Psalm 82:1 and click "search this resource" I get 1064 results. If I do the same thing for Elohim in Psalm 82:6 I get 1541 results (2 different Lemmas

  • Confused by the lemma of Elohim

In Psalm 82:1 of the KJV, the lemma for Elohim is אלהים. In Psalm 82:6, the lemma for Elohim is אלה. Can someone explain the difference to me? I noticed that the manuscript form is the same for both verses. If the difference is an issue of morphology, I thought that was indicated with the manuscript form and not the lexical form. Why does the BHS have

The commentaries in the Platinum package are not of much use. They either don't address the issue or if they do, they don't explain their point of view. Which commentaries do you consider "scholarly"?

  • Hebrew Scholars

Is there anything in the morphology or syntax that can show who the "he" and "his" is referring to in the following passage: Psalm 37:23 - "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: And he delighteth in his way." Is the he God or a good man? Thanks!

  • Re: Septuagint Scholars

Thanks for the help guys. I read somewhere that the LXX has "angels of God" in Genesis 6:2 so I looked for myself. Swete has "angels of God" but Rahlfs has "sons of God". It's interesting that Rahlfs has "angels of God" (for bene Elohim) everywhere it occurs but Genesis 6:2,4. So I guess the correct statement would be certain editions of the Septuagint

  • Septuagint Scholars

    1. I have 2 Septuagints in my resources. Swete, H. B. (2009). The Old Testament in Greek: According to the Septuagint (Text) and Septuaginta: With morphology . 1979 (electronic ed.). Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft. Which of these are considered more accurate or authoritative? 2. I'm assuming the original Septuagint has been lost and all we have

  • Re: ἐξελέξατο in Ephesians 1:4

So I reread Mounce on the subject of Deponents and it appears that I have misrepresented him. He states that verbs ending in ομαι are deponents in the present tense, not necessarily past or future. He also has a little note about some recent discussions challenging whether there is such a thing as deponency.

  • Re: ἐξελέξατο in Ephesians 1:4

I appreciate all of the replies. Just when you think you know something, you find out you really don't know it at all. Mounce teaches that verbs ending in ομαι are deponent and therefore have an active voice and no middle voice should be assumed. Either 1) Mounce is right and the scholars mentioned in this thread are wrong, 2) I have misunderstood Mounce

  • ἐξελέξατο in Ephesians 1:4

The morphology list this word as middle voice. The lemma form ends in ομαι which I have learned to mean that the verb is a deponent which implies active meaning. Therefore, is it correct to say that God has chosen the believers for Himself (which is middle voice)? Thanks for your help!
