          Somewhere in my Logos Library I’ve found this: John Chrysostom (c. 347–407 -- His last words are said to have been, "δόξα τῷ θεῷ πάντων ἕνεκεν" (Glory be to God for all things!)

                For those of you who are younger (I’m 77!), in the olden days a diagnosis of pneumonia for an older man used to be a “sentence of death”

                        That’s what happened to me early, early in the morning of May 5! My Breathing was so bad that my wife had to call 911 and I was taken by ambulance to the Oshawa, Ontario Hospital to the Intensive Care Unit. Spent four days there, then five days in Constant Care Unit, then seven days in the wards and came home late yesterday, a total of 16 days – just over ½ a month, but never alone!

                Our Gracious Father! Jesus! The Holy Spirit! His holy angels – prayers of many believers, some I’ve known, some I have never met; although we WILL be meeting then the Kingdom is “translated” at the end of time!             *smile*                              All with me and supported me!

                 To those of you who have prayed for me, thank you! They have been answered!

                May God give me strength in the future to support others if it be His Will for me to continue my life in this world!

                    Meanwhile, the prognosis is Good!   Healing is happening, and I hope for a good return to where I was!        Praise God!

                            This is the third time in just over two years that I have come close to death. How wonderful it is that I have a great Future through the Glorious Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!              *smile*

            Meanwhile, I remember daily that He died for me; and I ask the Holy Spirit of God to help me always live for Him and for the Gospel!

I believe that Unix (and aliases) disappears when he is in classes. If someone knows the Swedish term dates we can estimate when he will return.

I've enjoyed being a part of the forums for a while and find that if MJ Smith or Dan Francis post in a forum, I usually read it. That's a lot of posts, but I value what they contribute.

IIRC (and Spanish class was some time ago so correct me if I'm wrong DAL) Chick in Spanish is akin to saying "female" (and depending on the ending either young, or mature female) in English.

Oh, and what's exactly so negative about chicks? I just read in the dictionary that it's "offensive" to some, but it doesn't say why; so, please, enlighten me.

I believe some consider it to be a bit slighting, as if you were calling an adult woman a "girl," thereby minimizing their competence and independence.

Ok, I understand that it maybe does not have the same meaning for you, hence my respectful request. In the UK, there's no way that using the word "chick" to describe women would be considered acceptable when placed alongside the word "men". Some people would use the word "women" were they referring to female humans. Others prefer "ladies" (and its counterpart "gentlemen"). "Chicks" has a slightly derogatory implication, which would draw focus to a women's age/attractiveness as opposed to her intellectual abilities, and it's definitely slang. It might be a bit like using the word "stud" instead of "man", but that's not entirely equivalent.

DAL, I must complement you. First, I had not made the connection to spanish. And that's living in El Paso for a while. I should have remembered. Second, I'm used to being associated with various farm animals on this forum (e.g. donkeys, etc). So, some extra chickens is no great weight on my farming shoulders.

But more seriously, I'm impressed with your frankness. I, myself, do not mind 'chicks' and indeed like the Dixie Chicks. But it does come in a lengthy tradition of put-downs for various groups in our society. Rayner is correct.

Here in my part of the US its understood - especially from a Spanish man not to be intended as an insult. For those (here in my cuban/american part of florida) that are offended its usually because of the "young" aspect as it is used in English: IE its condescending to someone's life experience, or knowledge, or personhood. The way the post was interpreted sort of reflects this as well (and correct me if I am wrong ladies) it seems to have been interpreted by some to have been a condescension or as though the women in our ranks are second class. I'm not sure how offensive this is in america these days due to the rising numbers of people who grew up speaking spanish in their homes.

PLUS in urban contexts the word Chicken when applied to a woman (and chick in english is what a baby chicken is called) can be very insulting as it is an insinuation of loose morals and desire for oral sex (and its understood that this is to take place outside of marriage).

Any way having been on the wrong side of a language barrier before I can empathize, and say with certainty no offense was intended by DAL.

Fwiw if you ever travel to Haiti - learn how to declare your need of a restroom (or water closet for my English friends) BEFORE you find your self on a 7 hr drive from the airport without a translator
