Questions about Ancient Literature

I really like the Ancient Literature feature - it's so much better than individual searching. However, why does it show results for things I don't have in my library? (and my library isn't small in my estimation - Reformed Platinum + other stuff accumulated over 13 years) That isn't really helpful. Is this a bug or simply the way it is? If it is the way it is can we change the display features? Thanks.

That is correct and no it cannot be changed. Think of this section as having bibliographies at the end of encyclopedia articles or as being an index reference book ... it is not intended to show what is in your library; it is intended to show you the standard works available.

While Mike's waiting for his screen shot, 'at the moment' the resources feeding AL isn't that big. I just ran one, and I had all the referenced books (mainly because it's just the fathers, etc, and 2nd Temple, and even for those, a limited set of books).

Absent seeing the screen-copy specifics, maybe you have some pennies in your piggy bank? Logos.com has a collection that hits most of it.

Ancient Literature is less of a search of what's on your individual installation and more of a curated index ordered by Bible reference across the available literature. Like a Scripture Index, but for a wide, wide range of ancient literature. As such, it provides results for the larger set.

Efficient ways to display references that exist on a particular installation is something we've talked about internally. The primary issue is that checking for existence of links like those used in Ancient Literature is very processor intensive (techie speak for "S-L-O-W!"). We have some ideas, but if we implemented this now, the display would slow to a crawl. We didn't think that was acceptable, and we had feedback from our beta users that the information for the larger set (i.e., all the links, not just those on a particular installation) was valuable both for use in Logos and for knowing the sorts of references to follow up on in a print library.

Thanks again for your encouraging words. I hope sometime in the future users will be able to know (in some visual manner) which links they can click and see immediately, and which they do not currently have access to.

Chad - It's worth noting that if you hover your mouse over an entry in the Ancient Literature section then if you get a popup with an extract then you have the resource, if you don't get a popup you don't.

Clicking on an entry for which you don't have a resource will open a Power Lookup window advising you which resources provided by Faithlife will provide that particular article.

There was another thread almost as soon as the feature came out that got quite heated. Essentially, some people really didn't like the fact that it delivered results that weren't in their libraries while some of the rest of us really like the fact that we can then look these up in dead-tree libraries or books we have. I fall into the second category, but do think it would be good to have a visual cue to indicate whether you've got the resource or not. I would, though, be sorry to lose the other references.

Because of what Rick shared I don't feel the need to share a screen shot. I did notice that hovering over would let me know whether I have the resource or not. I simply wanted to know whether it was a bug. I don't have the paper libraries of those that I don't have so it isn't as exciting, but I do love the feature. To be able to see what Augustine or Cyprian or others had to say is helpful in seeing the history of interpretation of a passage. Thanks.
