I was trying to listen to a couple versified resources today. In Aristotle's Poetics, section numbers are read (which is fine) but verses are not and that is good, to avoid interrupting the flow of reading constantly. In Josephus' Antiquities (any version) each and every verse number is read aloud (not good).
Chapters and sections headings should be read; verses should not. Since these are coded, would there not be a way to tell the read aloud function to skip them?
